Quasars are the 100 most kino TASes—the absolute aesthetic of TASing on the basis of complete separation from casual gaming and speedrunning. Quasars hold the attention of the viewer to the point of enthrallment, masterfully exploit a game until its limits have been exhausted, and/or showcase a wide range of astonishing concepts.

In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.
This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.
What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.
Also be sure to check out this movie being played back on an actual NES.

While the CPUs were distracted, FractalFusion changed the dice on them and then left the board for a few minutes. When he came back, all the CPUs were crying. The fraud squad is still investigating.
This movie aims to defeat 4 CPU controlled players, ceasing to press buttons on the controller after as little time as possible. Luck is manipulated for the first 1:08, and then the CPUs are left to lose by themselves without requiring any further actions by the player.

Family Feud (1993) follows the premise of the American TV show of the same name. Two families are pitted against each other in a contest aimed at guessing the results of a public survey. In the first two rounds, the first family member to press a button and give a concise answer that happens to be on the survey earns points. After that, this family can continue guessing answers on the survey, with control switching to the other family on incorrect guesses. After two rounds, the family with fewer points is disqualified, and the last round allows two members of the remaining family to list several of the existing survey answers in a very short time period.
Heisanevilgenius's family, The As, ignores all that and goes with elaborate and utter nonsense instead… only to find the host accepting their answers as correct. The other family, The Halls, doesn't even get the chance to insert a word, proving the racial prejudice of the host. Watch the game and see for yourself.
If you liked how this movie abuses a text recognition system, also see the trouble that TAS tools bring to a drawing recognition system.
Note: Some answers contain coarse language.
This run was resynced to BizHawk 2.8 by DrD2k9 in order to fix the poor sound emulation from the original run, as well as to remove a piece of outdated language.

Full completion of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Both this run and the short version use a wobbling trick in order to make Link walk a bit faster.
The execution of this maneuver requires the usage of a controller that allows the player to press Up+Down simultaneously (such as, in this case, a modified Snes9x's controller).
The traveling-through-walls trick that is seen in the short version is not used.
This run features an improvement of a little over 4 minutes.

This movie plays Excitebike really fast with an improvement of over a second compared to the previous movie by JXQ.
Times for each track are:
- 0 = 36.19 (0.35 improved)
- 1 = 37.84 (0.40 -"-)
- 2 = 38.67 (0.19 -"-)
- 3 = 41.96 (0.02 -"-)
- 4 = 41.00 (0.02 -"-)
- 5 = 31.34 (0.40 -"-)
Cumulative in-game savings: 1.38s
Main improvements come from taking ramps faster and a unique trick in which the author goes slower to get a better time. Look for further info in the author's comments.
The encode for this movie features commentary in the form of soft subtitles.

When watching sports, you're usually prepared for the unexpected. But what happens when it verges into the outright impossible?
In this superplay, watch in awe as a team is forced to score on its own goal ("OH NO! OWN GOAL!?"), the scoreboard mysteriously records extra goals that were never scored (and even rolls backwards at one point), and the very laws of physics themselves seem to get completely broken.

A short Japanese game about a small green toy who can summon stars to help him defeat monsters and to use them as platforms to reach high places and travel fast.
In this movie, the authors collect all of the items to enter the secret 7th level after the boss at the end of the 6th level, and do so 2 minutes and 15 seconds faster than the previous movie.
The game cartridge of Gimmick! contains a special microchip, FME7, which extends the number of sound channels in the game from 5 to 8, creating a more melodic soundtrack than in most other NES games.
This movie has an Atlas Map encode of Level 6, which shows the standard encode overlaid on a zoomed out map.
If you like this, be sure to check out the other run of this game, which skips the secret items.

This movie aims for the fastest possible time to get a score of 999999 in this game. A surprising 00:17.54 seconds have been shaved off the previous movie through the discovery of a new glitch.
It warps directly to the 18th level and fills half of the field quickly to be able to operate short distances in the top part of the field. From there on, it only gets Tetrises (4-line clearings) until the score is maxed out.
A glitch involving pressing several directional buttons at once is used to manipulate luck for the next pieces. Flickering of the next piece block and piece in play results. Of course, the fun doesn't stop there, the L blocks also have their say in getting Tetrises.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?
When "perfection" is defined as "as fast as possible", it requires some sacrifices. Indeed, this movie sacrifices a lot in the playability of the game. Full of tricks to pass through walls, tricks to avoid mandatory battles, tricks to pass through enemies relatively unharmed, tricks to acquire weapon refills in little time — there is very little in this movie left that resembles normal playing. Even death is used as a viable playing strategy that saves time. All of the tricks are still performed by the means of mere controller input, even though significant portions of the input were calculated by a computer program.
This movie is a considerable improvement of 03:04.40 to the previous movie; this is mainly due to a new technique which tricks the game into calling an 'end of level' object.
Of course, upon watching this movie, one does have to question something... is it Mega Man saving the world? Or Dr. Wily trying to save it from absolute destruction?
WARNING: There are flashing lights during the level select screen and in boss fights which may cause epileptic seizures to those affected.

Brain Age (also known as Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training) is a puzzle game designed on the premise of exercising your brain. In this run, for example, the idea is to solve a series of simple mathematical puzzles.
And yet, the answers given... are not exactly what you'd expect.
The same author of the previous run brings you a set of 51 new ... answers, with extra time taken to provide you, the viewer, with the greatest possible attention to detail. Additionally, the increased detail provides a higher level of difficulty, to prevent the number recognition from checking the answer before the image is complete.
If you liked how this movie abuses a drawing recognition system, also see the trouble that TAS tools bring to a text recognition system.

In the direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link is back to being a lone boy without a fairy. One day, he is attacked by Skull Kid and his two fairies, Tatl and Tael, and they steal his ocarina. After pursuing Skull Kid, he is transformed into a Deku Scrub. Link continues pursuing Skull Kid all the way to the Clock Town (now with the help of Tatl the fairy, a more 'in yo face' version of Navi).
This TAS of the game is the result of three years of hard work and many restarts due to new discoveries. It features many never-before-seen tricks and glitches, and completes every dungeon without getting a single boss key. Everything is done out of order, in ways that will amaze the viewer and keep them on the edge of their seat the entire way through, including a whole new way of warping between the areas in the game's over-world, and a new method of traveling that makes even the longest stretches in the game seem tiny.
The author beats the game in two 3-day cycles (the previous route used three), and does so in a way that puts every past attempt at a 6-day challenge to shame.
Note: There are encodes of higher resolutions in the discussion thread. Also, if you know the cutscenes of this game by memory at this point and would rather watch an encode without them, it's your lucky day.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen.
Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...
In this run, feos and MESHUGGAH beat the previously fastest TAS of this game by 02:21.93, this time using 2 players instead of 1. You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all, you will wonder how in the world they broke this game so much. Do yourself a favor and read the authors' notes.

Rockman & Forte (ロックマン&フォルテ), known as Mega Man & Bass in the Western world, used to be the last game in the original Rockman/Mega Man series, until Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chōsensha (ロックマン&フォルテ 未来からの挑戦者) was released for the WonderSwan.
This time around, Dr. Wily has his own creation turned against him, allowing the player to use Mega Man or a bad guy!
However, in this run, the players only use Mega Man and collect each and every CD in the game, which shouldn't be possible using only one character. Then again, many things happen in this movie that weren't intended to be possible.
This run is a collaboration between sparky, the current author of the other branches for this game, parrot14green, the author of the previous "100 CDs" run, and woabcfl, the author of the Rockman no Constancy runs. It improves the previous movie by 01:40.97. You can read the authors' comments for more details.
There are two more Rockman & Forte runs to watch on this site; featuring completion of the game with Rockman and Forte as fast as possible, without worrying about CD collection.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, the third game in the series for the DS, takes a different direction from its direct predecessors in that it is more of a stage-based game, similar to the earliest entries in the series, rather than the "Metroidvania"-style first established by Symphony of the Night.
This run plays as Albus, only available as a character after the player has cleared the game as Shanoa. Watch in awe as he beats down this difficult game with reality warping abilities and flaming kicks.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is one of the most diverse games of the series in terms of characters and play modes.
The authors take advantage of this and deliver an exceptional playaround movie. Bugs, easter eggs and impossible combos are shown off at a breathtaking pace. The movie features a mix of 1 and 2 player play for added variety.
This movie is longer than its predecessor by around 14 minutes, showing off more glitches. It also uses a cheat that enables pausing in order to show off even more glitches.

Crystalis is an awesome action RPG by SNK. What little plot there is involves the world ending on October 1, 1997. Naturally, after that the world became full of mutants and monsters. Technology regresses and people can use magic. There is an evil empire trying to revive the ancient technology, specifically the obligatory tower floating in the sky. The hero pops out of some sort of stasis chamber and proceeds to topple the empire and take down the tower with the help of some wise men and a friendly dolphin. There's a heroine named Mesia, but she only shows up a few times, most of which are skipped in this run.
This beats the previous run by almost 12 minutes. As with that run, the second-controller cheats are off-limits (the fm2 only has data for controller 1). Other than that, no holds are barred. Many new glitches are used. For a complete list, see the Game Resources page. Movement is faster by abusing the no-subpixel engine. Much effort went into lag reduction, especially in certain areas. However, the vast majority of the time savings is due to better experience management.
We recommend watching the movie on an emulator and using the author's LUA script. There's quite a bit of useful information.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on the Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. In it, Soma Cruz continues to cultivate his unhealthy obsession with collecting the souls of his enemies.
Using the powers that only tool assistance can provide, every single possible soul is collected in a bit over 35 minutes. If you've ever played the game, you know what a pain those souls can be.
Very detailed information on the run is available in the author's comments.
There are also runs that complete the game as fast as possible with Soma, with Julius, and with Julius while staying in bounds.

In a shocking twist of events, Bowser kidnaps Peach inside her own castle. Mario shows up and rains on Bowser's parade by collecting all 120 stars and winning in record time.
Numerous bugs are exploited in order to speed up Mario's progress and the physics engine is abused to its fullest.
This is an improvement of 18:08.33 over the previous movie by Rikku.
If you prefer to see the game beaten in the fastest time, then watch the "1 key" run.

Acknowledged as one of the best Mario games of all time, Super Mario World is a must see for fans of classic games. This run completes the game fully (all 96 exits) and makes use of almost every known glitch to make it as fast and exciting as possible.
This TAS by bahamete, Kaizoman666 & Masterjun is an improvement of 06:43.97 minutes over the previous movie. The improvement comes from new glitches and better optimization.
If you like this video, be sure to also see Super Demo World 100% completion (120 exits) in 2:02:04.49 by PangaeaPanga.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi. From a technical standpoint, the game is very exceptional on the SNES due to its use of the SuperFX² coprocessor. The chip allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on the SNES.
This is a 100% completion of the game. It plays through all the levels and collects every item that contributes to end-of-level score: 5 flowers, 20 red coins, and 30 stars. By getting 100% completion in each stage, six extra stages are also unlocked. These are played at the end of the run, again with 100% scores.
The authors of the run have spent over three years working on this run, showing off plenty of egg juggling, precise shots, and other incredible antics. This run does not use certain glitches present in the other runs of the game (an any% run and a warp glitch run), but there should still be plenty to surprise you. Reading the authors' lengthy comments is recommended.
Note: The many graphical issues are a result of inaccurate emulation.

This run of Bomberman 64 achieves 100% status, which means earning 120 gold cards and all custom parts (alternate costumes for multiplayer modes). To acquire the prime "gold parts", players must obtain 120 gold cards within three hours of in-game time on hard mode.
Watch zvsp blast through the stages and collect the cards very quickly. Many bomb-stacking glitches are used to skip areas. Some cards require killing a certain minimum number of enemies, so you'll also get to see Bomberman blow up lots of enemies. Also, the player dies on purpose several times, for deathwarps and as shortcuts for some cards in hazardous conditions.

In part three of the Streets of Rage series, Mr. X is back and this time his plan involves replacing public officials with his own robots. Only Axel, Blaze, Skate, and newcomer Dr. Zan can stop him. Streets of Rage 3 features all of the beat 'em up action you would expect from a Streets of Rage game.
One new feature is the special move power bar, where it only costs energy to do a special move if the bar isn't full. Also new is the ability to do special maneuvers with different weapons, depending on the character. For example, Skate has no special move with the pipe, but he does have one with the knife. The opposite is true for Axel. Any weapon Dr. Zan picks up is turned into energy balls which he can throw at the enemies. Secret characters and multiple endings also add replay value.
In this run, watch atro city stylishly dispose of a lot of thugs and robots using Blaze and Dr. Zan, clearing a long game in only about 38 minutes. A glitch is used which does damage much more quickly when two characters attack multiple enemies at the same time. For more details, read the submission comments.

Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. fighting game series is rather different from your typical fighting game. Instead of wearing your opponent's health down to 0, you must knock him or her out of the battlefield. Damage counts upwards, with knockback from attacks that hit you becoming more severe as your damage increases. Fighting controls are also simplified, making it very easy for even your non-gaming friends to pick up and play.
Super Smash Bros. Melee offers fighters from the wealth of Nintendo characters like Mario, Bowser, different Pokémon, Link, and Kirby. They can either fight through the single-player modes like Classic, Adventure, and Event Mode, or they battle it out against other characters in a four-player frenzy.
Additional characters and stages are unlocked as hidden objectives are met, and coins rewarded for playing in all modes can be spent on a capsule toy machine. The toys in the machine represent games from Nintendo's entire video game history, and each can be viewed in 3D with a brief description.
In this TAS, numerics plays through Adventure Mode with Samus, abusing glitches to move through the stages at a high rate of speed while making the battles as entertaining as possible.

The good Mecha Santa plans to spread happiness and cheer all over the world. Princess Pitch, previously a sidekick in the game Garden Gnome Carnage, sets out to put an end to those silly plans.
This time around, Princess Pitch decides to take on Mecha Santa and his army of robot elves on a difficulty harder than the hardest (Reallyjoel's Mom), since it's too easy otherwise. Reallyjoel's Mom is a secret joke difficulty meant to be impossible: it multiplies the spawn and attack rate of all enemies several times over and removes all powerups and ammo refills. Consequently, a player without tool assistance will maybe beat one room - if they're lucky.
This TAS gets through with liberal use of the piledriver move, as well as precise movement and shooting.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most dearly loved games from the SNES library. In it, you play as Crono and set off on a journey through time to save the world from the villainous Lavos.
The game can be ripped apart in a matter of minutes through advanced save corruption techniques, but in this movie the author forgoes this exploit in order to play through more of the game, and does so in barely more than half the time of the last run in the same category. Don't expect this run-through to follow a coherent narrative any time soon, though — it still skips quite a lot of content.

Arguably one of the most well-known and well-developed SNES
hacks in existence, Super Demo World puts Mario into a new realm that spans well beyond his original adventure.
Features of the hack include:
- The ability to store unconventional items in the reserve box, such as a koopa, springboard, message box, or vine
- 120 exits in total, including two secret worlds
- Creative and challenging level design, with some puzzle elements thrown in
- "New" graphics (mostly backgrounds taken from other games, such as Donkey Kong Country 3 and Mega Man X)
In this run, PangaeaPanga improves upon the previous movie by more than five minutes using newly discovered glitches and a slower overworld route, which counterintuitively saves time.

Magician Lord puts you in control of Elta, a wizard who has the task of retrieving eight books of wisdom from the clutches of Az Atorse, the god of destruction. By collecting certain powerups along the way, you can transform into different characters, including Rajin, Samurai, Waterman, Shinobi, Poseidon, and Dragon Warrior. Each transformation makes Elta more powerful and grants him new attacks.
Watch £e_Nécroyeur blaze through the game with heavy abuse of a zipping glitch and, well, blazes.
This run improves upon its previous iteration not by time improvement, but by deciding to end the game faster rather than ending input faster; this results in a slightly longer input time, but skips out a big waiting period from the previous run.

Not only was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX but also the first PSX game to have a published run here.
Not satisfied with just going on a death spree to Dracula, Alucard decides to steal every single one of his father's heirlooms, while also killing his prized collection of monsters. Luckily he has the handy ability of phasing through walls whenever he needs to.
A run that beats the game through save data corruption is available here, along with one that avoids data corruption. If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms and to pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version. If you want to see a run on Replay mode that can skip many cutscenes, see this run. We also have a run of the Saturn version using Maria. We even have a run where Alucard avoids killing everything except Dracula.
Due to the lengthy amount of time needed to obtain the best ending in the previous run, this run was deemed significantly more entertaining, and thus obsoletes it.
Note: Due to an emulation error, the audio in the ending FMV sequence doesn't play.

In VVVVVV, the player controls Captain Viridian, who is lost in an alternate dimension, in search of the missing members of the spaceship's crew. Instead of jumping, the player is able to control the direction of gravity, allowing Captain Viridian to flip between the floors and ceilings of the environment. The graphical style of the game is heavily influenced by the Commodore 64.
In the spirit of the retro games' secret hunt, 20 aptly named Shiny Trinkets are hidden throughout the game. The author makes sure to collect all of them in his movie.
Additionally, this TAS is completed on the game's no-death mode, which removes all the cutscenes and dialogues, as well as allows collecting a specific Trinket without having to die. Dying once on this mode prompts an instant game over, making it an especially brutal challenge in unassisted conditions. As this naturally prohibits the skips and glitches that abuse forcible deaths, it allows the audience to see the game in its entirety and, indeed, enjoy its level design and excellent chiptune-style soundtrack.
If you would like to see the game completed with no holds barred, make sure to check out the glitched any% and the game end glitch TASes that complete the game a lot quicker than one would have imagined!

Ludicrous-speed bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with both Sonic and Tails controlled by the player.
This run takes everything you know about Sonic 3 & Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It extensively uses the "scroll objects offscreen to pass through them" trick to zip and warp to places that shouldn't be reached, break bosses, and effectively skip entire stages.
This latest effort by Aglar and marzojr represents the first published improvement of this run in over four years, and the first time since this run, over seven years ago, that the authors replayed the entire game instead of replaying only select levels and then splicing input from the previous movie. Every single level is faster, and there are some surprising new glitches in several stages. For more details, see the run's comments.
And also we have runs with Amy, Knuckles, Tails, Knuckles ring attack, Sonic 100%, Knuckles 100%, Competition mode and Sonic and Tails on NewGame+.
The downloadable encodes in the second set use a camhack, which attempts to always keep Sonic onscreen and puts HD sprites on top of the background to make the TAS look even better.

Normally a solar eclipse isn't a dangerous event, but for Soma Cruz being sucked through a portal and into Dracula's castle during one will turn his day into a total nightmare. As Soma you must venture through the castle and find a way out. As you do so, you will discover the true meaning behind the event, and why Dracula has risen yet again.
Those who greatly dislike that Aria of Sorrow's main character isn't related to the Belmont clan whatsoever can safely relax, because the powerhouse known as Julius Belmont enters the stage to destroy every boss faster then Soma ever could.
Julius is only available to those who have completed the main quest. While he can't do most of Soma Cruz's fancy tricks, he can get around just as quickly by glitching through walls and hopping madly around the castle, producing almost inhuman sounds with every jump.
This movie obsoletes the previous one in this category, despite having a longer time, because it uses hard mode, is more optimized and also manages to get into a Julius vs. Julius fight.
Note: This movie starts where a main quest TAS left off. We do not usually accept movies beginning from a save. Please read the rules to see our reasons.

Super Pitfall is a rather poorly programmed platforming game offering many opportunities for glitch abuse. In order to beat the game (the first quest, at least), Pitfall Harry must accomplish 6 tasks:
- obtain the Raj Diamond
- find the key to Quickclaw the Lion's cage
- rescue Quickclaw the Lion
- find the flask of medicine, which can heal Rhonda
- rescue Rhonda
- return to the starting point after completing the previous 5 tasks
This is an improvement of 1 minute and 38.18 seconds over the previous movie, thanks to a lot of wall clipping.

Sega's Super Monkey Ball (2001) lets you take control of one of four monkeys trapped inside a transparent ball. You must complete each stage by tilting the game level to roll your monkey using the force of gravity and colliding with objects. There are over 100 unique levels ranging in difficulty from easy to near impossible.
In this TAS, the authors start at the Expert difficulty, where they proceed to tear through most of its 60 levels as well as the 10 Master levels, using warps where necessary and breaking most of the heavily optimized console world record times.
This TAS improves upon the previous publication by nearly 16 in-game seconds, using many new route optimizations. More information can be found in the submission text.

Pac-In-Time for the Game Boy was released in 1994 as a port of the DOS version of the game. Pac-In-Time is in turn a re-skin of the game Fury of the Furries for DOS and Amiga, which was licensed to Namco and re-released with Pac-Man instead. This game is a departure from normal Pac-Man gameplay involving mazes and ghosts, and is instead a platformer.
In this run, watch as slamo demonstrates some furious rope swinging action and so many physics glitches that it'll make you cry. Waka waka.

This is the 12th published movie of Super Mario World that beats the game by clearing 11 of the 96 exits, the shortest route intended by the game developers. This movie's faster by 00:02.75 seconds, clocking at less than 10 minutes. As in the previous publication, Mario still dies in the process.
A few new tricks were found:
- Stunning a fish;
- Lateral corner clip;
- Downward corner boost.
We recommend reading the authors' comments for more details.
There are also movies of this game that trigger the credits early, clear all 96 exits, clear as many exits as possible as small Mario and write a program using the game's code.
The encodes feature commentary by the authors as soft subtitles.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is a very famous and popular game for the NES. There are normally two main ways to beat it: the quick way using warp whistles to skip worlds, and the longer way which goes through all the worlds.
Lord_Tom goes the same route as the this game end glitch run. However, he achieves total control of the game, pushing the run to a whole new level. He gives himself new powers, like the speed booster and the suit-swap, to name a few. Read the author's comments for more details.
This run was shown at Awesome Games Done Quick 2016 during the TAS block. You can see it here
WARNING: Mario's new powers in this run include flashing lights which may cause epileptic seizures to those affected.

Based loosely on the plot of the movie of the same name, this game is about a man named Stanley Ipkiss, who finds a powerful mask known as The Mask. However, the evil Dorian Tyrell has also become aware of this and kidnaps his girlfriend in order to obtain it.
One of the traits The Mask seems to give Stanley is extreme speed, so naturally, aside from a couple of boss fights, the gameplay is extremely fast throughout the movie. The Mask also has a variety of special powers, most of which are seen in this run. These powers cost M points to use, which have to be managed carefully over the stage.
BrunoVisnadi improves the previous run by 18.62 seconds, thanks to new glitches and better optimisation. Read the author's comments for more information on the new glitches.

The last in the original Dragon Warrior storyline, this one follows "the Hero", who is tasked with saving the world from the archfiend Baramos. After cobbling together a group of people to take with him, the Hero must travel the world to find a way to Baramos's lair.
Or at least, that was what was supposed to happen. Thanks to a glitch involving a party of dead characters, vaxherd manages to manipulate his inventory and warp list to not only have extremely rare pieces of equipment from nothing, but also warps directly to where Baramos is located in a fraction of the time it would take normally.
In addition to this, vaxherd also uses a glitch involving resets and character names to manipulate the RNG and encounter formula at certain points, thereby beating the previous run by over seven minutes.

Shadow of the Ninja is one of the rare games in which constantly jumping and slashing is faster than regular running. The author makes sure to use this move extensively both to travel and to deal damage to enemies, and so it may seem that the ninja has a severe case of ADHD.

F-Zero X is the 3D sequel to the popular SNES hovercraft racing title. It offers a wide array of cars, tracks and play options, and has had an active speed-running community since its release in 1998.
This TAS completes the 6 tracks of the Jack Cup in time trial mode, where you choose any track to drive solo aiming for fastest possible completion of 3 laps according to the in-game timer, accurate to the millisecond. A special input sequence is used to unlock all cars (you normally unlock cars by playing in grand prix mode).
This TAS saves 1'10"614 (in-game track totals) over the previous Jack Cup TAS by Lord_Tom. For a per-track comparison, check the author's comments.

Everyone who has at least once attempted to gather a soul from each of the 120 different enemies in Aria of Sorrow, especially during a speedrun, knows the frustration it incurs after a hundredth failed attempt to get the required drop. That just makes this all-souls TAS, played on hard mode, even more impressive.
This is an improvement of 1:38.85 over the previous movie, thanks to a more optimised route and newly used items. Please read the authors' comments for more details.
If you would like to see the game beaten even faster, don't miss the any% run by one of the authors, klmz.

The Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that needs no introduction to most NES players. It is a large game that normally takes days to beat, but at TASVideos, we often reduce games to the minimum time necessary in order to complete them. It's a secret to everybody.
This is the seventh iteration of this TAS, 20.6 seconds faster than the previous run. The improvements are largely due to better luck manipulation and some major route changes that lead to Link staying away from gambling. For more details, read the submission comments or the author's subtitles on the encodes.

Mario Kart 64 is the first 3D game in the Mario Kart series, released in 1996 by Nintendo. Widely regarded as classic, it still retains a following to this day.
A run 7 years in the making, this Mario Kart 64 TAS features weatherton completing all 4 Grand Prix Cups in under 21 minutes. Due to the nature of the game,
knowledge of the internal code allows for heavy RNG manipulation, getting even the most unlikely items on the first try. This and the incredible movement precision are used to create crazy shortcuts, often completing laps in mere seconds.
The submission text contains highly detailed information about the strategies of every track, the RNG manipulation and a lot of other information about the run.

Here is a warpless run of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1988), which introduced RPG elements and a side-scrolling view instead of the traditional Zelda overhead view. An evil magician has cast a sleep spell on Princess Zelda. Link must place 6 crystals in palaces throughout Hyrule in order to release the binding force that protects the Triforce of Courage hidden in the Great Palace.
This movie is an improvement of 00:09.32 seconds compared to the previous run. Most of the new time saved is from getting almost impossible fairy spawns at overworld traps. Please read the authors' comments for details.
This movie avoids using the extremely gamebreaking hyperspeed and scroll-lock glitches seen in the warp glitch branch. This movie also avoids all of the minorly gamebreaking wrong warps in order to significantly increase the technical skill required to create the movie; we also have a movie which does use these "glitched warps," which allows a rather different route through the game.
This movie was a part of a two-hour Zelda II TAS showcase with audio commentary by Arc, Inzult, Jackimus, Mithical9, and Feasel.
PHOTOSENSITIVITY WARNING: Many moments in this game contain intense flashing lights, including during boss fights and whenever the player dies. This may cause epileptic seizures to those affected.

At first there were 70 stars, because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars, because MIPS the Rabbit demanded it. Then there was 1 star, because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Then there were no stars, but 2 keys, because the door leading to the castle basement demanded it. Now there is 1 key because the viewers are impatient and demanded the game be quicker.
As with many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains. If you'd like to see more of what Super Mario 64 has to offer, see the "70 Stars, no BLJ" run or the "120 Stars" run.
This movie is 2457 frames faster than the previous movie due to the recently discovered and long sought after 'Moat Skip', new strategies and extreme optimizations made possible by parallel universes as explained in the submission text.
Super Mario 64 has a history of publications on this site. If you wish to see how it unfolded since the beginning, see the page SM64TASHistory. Also, if you have a hankering to see MIPS the rabbit, the 16 stars route has been improved.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is quite different from most of the early games in the Legend of Zelda series. It combines an overworld view with side-scrolling platform stages. In addition, the character can gain experience and levels, visit towns, and earn spells and items which are needed to proceed.
However, the game also has a large glitch which produces massive speed when both Left and Right are pressed at the same time; due to the use of this and other glitches, most of this run features Link racing across Hyrule so fast that the screen can't keep up, and inexplicably warping between places that shouldn't be connected. Only a few items and one spell are collected, and the only enemy ever fought is the final boss. Luckily, he takes the same amount of damage no matter what level attack you have.
In this run, Arc improves on TASEditor's previous efforts by four seconds due to a recently discovered encounter glitch. See the author's comments for more details.
We also have a run that completes the six palaces without using the Left + Right glitch to turn the game into a barely comprehensible mess (but does allow the use of glitched warps) and another run that disallows both the Left + Right glitch and the use of glitched warps.
This movie was a part of a two-hour Zelda II TAS showcase with audio commentary by Arc, Inzult, Jackimus, Mithical9, and Feasel.

Gunstar Heroes (1993) is widely considered to be one of the best action games on the Sega Genesis, but, ironically, was commercially unsuccessful due to poor promotion. It features a variety of melee attacks, as well as 4 basic weapons which can be combined in pairs (making a total of 14 combinations) — all densely packed in a swift and explosion-heavy gameplay spanning over seven uniquely designed stages. The author takes special care to showcase all the moves the game is capable of, using every possible attack and having lots of fun playing around in autoscrolling sections.
This movie is a little under 4 and a half minutes faster than the previous one due to more aggressive boss fights and a new movement technique. See the author's comments for more details.
The encodes for this movie are also slightly larger than usual — this is due to an amount of colors and on-screen motion even the best codecs have problems coping with.

The Battle of Olympus (オリュンポスの戦い) is set in ancient Greece. A mortal man named Orpheus receives help from the gods and nymphs in his quest to save his lover Helene from Hades. People often compare this game with Zelda 2 because of its similar gameplay.
This is an improvement of 6.06 seconds over the previous movie, mainly thanks to the jump-turn technique and better olive farming. Please read the authors' comments for more details.

In this entry of the popular Metal Slug series, the evil would-be dictator General Morden launches another attempt to take over the world - or so it seems on the surface; this game proves that Morden is no Dr Wily by having the true villains turn out to be something else entirely.
Several of this game's stages branch; this run takes the shortest possible route through the game.
This run is faster than the predecessor movie by 02:41.75 minutes. Improvements come from using new strategies, using new tricks/glitches, and optimizing everything better.

The current Pokémon: Yellow Version speed record uses heavy glitches that allow the player to catalog every Pokémon in slightly over a minute. Is there any way to get more ridiculous than that? Yes! In this run, using nothing but the Game Boy buttons and tool-assisted precision, the game is made to run an arbitrary program which greatly expands the game and shows off cool stuff from elsewhere too. For details on how this was achieved, see the author's comments.
This movie improves upon the predecessor by using a payload which builds upon the environment in the game highlighting new areas, new Pokémon, and shows off a lot more that can be done with arbitrary code execution than displaying the digits of Pi and some minor animation. For more runs that involve arbitrary code execution, see our published list of movies which execute arbitrary code as well as discussion in our forum.
This video includes segments from some terrific games, including Pokémon Yellow, Gold, and Crystal, as well as from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Tetris, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. Please check those games out.

When a villain known only as Mr. Dark appears, trouble brews in Rayman's world. Mr. Dark captures the Toons - the source of light - and Rayman's friends. Without the light, evil creatures begin to roam, making the world unsafe for everyone. It's up to you, as Rayman, to free your friends and put an end to Mr. Dark's dastardly schemes!
Rayman is a side-scrolling platformer starring the titular Rayman, a big-nosed chap with no arms or legs. Rayman can jump and use his hair to hover for a short period of time. He can also attack by throwing his fists, or winding up his fists for a more powerful punch. He can occasionally find special powerups that grant him unlimited flying power, giving him the ability to navigate through tricky mazes.
scrimpeh and Got4n tear through this difficult game with a variety of glitches and physics exploits. For more details on how these glitches work, we recommend reading the authors' comments for information about this run.
Note that any% is the same as 100% for this game, as Rayman requires all the Toons to unlock the final battle with Mr Dark.

Goldeneye: 007 for the Nintendo Wii is a full-scale re-imagining of the N64 game, and includes no assets from the original game. It takes the classic Goldeneye story and updates it to the standards of a modern first-person shooter. It also features Daniel Craig rather than Pierce Brosnan, who played James Bond in the film and the Nintendo 64 game. It has many modern features such as the ability to sprint and aim down sights.
The missions in this game are based on the ones from the classic Nintendo 64 version instead of the film. Some of the stages from the original game have been combined in this game (for example, Bunker on Wii is like Bunker+Silo on N64 and Cradle is like Control+Cradle on N64). But there are also some brand-new missions like Nightclub and Solar.
This TAS plays on the hardest difficulty, 007 Classic. Like the original N64 game, the harder difficulties have more objectives than the easier difficulties. This makes the route much more interesting because the goal isn't simply to sprint to the end of the mission. 007 Classic also removes regenerating health, so there is much more health management on this difficulty. Because a modern Call of Duty-style FPS game with no health regeneration would be unfair, the developers added body armor that is only available on 007 classic, which the TAS makes great use of.
Since this game has roughly 35 minutes of unskippable cutscenes, the author provided a condensed video with all the cutscenes and loading screens removed.

This run of Donkey Kong Country aims for 101% completion.
The author of this run discovered several new time-saving techniques. Some of them are small enough to go unnoticed, and others are jawdroppingly huge. The total improvement over the previous run is a tremendous 6 minutes 6.93 seconds this time around.
The in-game time of this run is about 33 minutes 10 seconds. For a detailed analysis of new techniques as well as comments about individual levels, read the author's comments.

Super Mario 64: The Green Stars is a Super Mario 64 rom hack made by Kampel, released in August 2013. Also listed under "hacking" in the credits are Kaze, Frauber and VL-Tone.
The hack has a number of differences compared to the original game, such as an increased count of 130 stars, harder level design, and (as the title implies) green stars. The game is intended as a fan-made sequel to Super Mario 64, and is often praised for feeling very similar to the original game.
The trio of authors power through the hack with incredible speed, showcasing the various levels and landscapes, abusing the game's programming errors, and collecting all 130 stars in under 100 minutes.
Note: There are encodes of higher resolution in the discussion thread.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible, while completing all dungeons, and with the added challenge of doing so without opening any doors. He achieves this by exploiting multiple glitches not seen in any other category of the game in order to complete this challenge.
The submission notes go over in great details all the stipulations of the goal, the tricks, and glitches.
This TAS was done using the Japanese v1.0 version of the game. The reasons for this are glitches that are exclusive to v1.0, as well as text that is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.

007: Nightfire is a James Bond game. Does anything more need to be said? Guns, cars, planes, submarines, spaceships, girls, and megalomaniacs.
Authors FitterSpace, gamerfreak5665 and aleckermit show off James Bond's impressive skill set, including cocaine-induced firearm handling and driving so reckless, not even a cute animal would give him car insurance.

Sonic bounces around surprisingly fast. The lack of Spin Dash makes the strategy a bit different from that of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles runs, since preserving your momentum becomes a lot more important. However, this doesn't prevent the author from achieving crazy velocities even with such a significant limitation. In this run, the game is completed without collecting any emeralds.
This is the ninth publication of this branch, improving on the previous effort by 00:07.89 (of in-game time), due to even tighter optimization and some new shortcuts.
There are also runs where Knuckles and Tails they take advantage of their own abilities to finish the game in record time.
To see a movie of this game that doesn't take advantage of zips, watch the "no zips" run by Aglar.
The second encode link leads to a camhacked version. But don't expect the videos where Sonic is visible offscreen to make any more sense than the original ones!
This movie also has a full Atlas Map encode, which shows the camhack encode overlaid on a zoomed out map.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) was the game that introduced the Super Dash Attack. The ability, referred to as Spin Dash in later games, has become one of the most beloved features of the series and, indeed, one of the most prominent features of the speedrunning scene as a whole.
In this exhilarating movie, Aglar & Zurggriff speed their way through this classic's varied acts making good use of Spin Dashes to finish them in record time. The authors also control Tails — Sonic's two-tailed foxy buddy — to allow for even faster routes and making shorter work of bosses.
This is an improvement of 00:12.90 seconds over the predecessor movie.
We have a run where Knuckles replaces the main characters and finishes the game in record time, and another run where he goes for the max rings challenge.
Every second link leads to a CamHack encode that keeps Sonic visible all the time.

The second Castlevania title released on Nintendo DS after Dawn of Sorrow, this game is a direct sequel to Bloodlines on Sega Genesis. Dracula rises from the dead yet again (cue groan), and it's up to Jonathan Morris, helped out by Charlotte Aulin, a powerful mage student, to defeat him.
Beating Dracula into a pile of dust in under five minutes wasn't enough for our heroes, so this time they wreck his entire castle and surrounding areas before killing him. Every boss is slain, so you get to see more of that fast "showtime" action. Significant glitching is used; read the author's comments for more information.

Bionic Commando (1988) is a platform game with a hero who can't jump, but can quickly latch onto objects with his bionic arm. The name of the original (Japanese) version of the game literally translates to The Resurrection of Hitler: Top Secret. Nintendo censored the Nazi references for the North American version.
This is an improvement of 56.28 seconds over the previous movie, mainly thanks to a new trick in Area 12 where if damage is taken from an enemy at the same frame one would normally take damage from a barrier, one'd pass through the barrier, assuming the player's position is correct.
For more swinging goodness, check out these runs of the Game Boy and arcade versions. There is also an "all items" run which completes the optional stages as well.

Super Metroid is a platform game and a follow-up to Metroid II. Like the previous games in the series, it is not divided into separate levels; the planet Zebes is an open world which Samus traverses back and forth. This world is divided into rooms separated with doors which must be shot to be opened. Shooting is also used to open up secret passages, some of which contain nifty bonuses, but finding most of them is required to proceed in the game.
This run not only beats the previous any% but also obsoletes the previous reverse boss order TAS due to similar routes. This is an improvement of 1:40.95 over the predecessor movie. As well as an improvement over the reverse boss order TAS by 10:40.51.
Sniq makes short work of Mother Brain and her space pirates, largely due to a major route change. Please read the author's submission notes for more information.

In the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed Super Mario 64, Mario and Peach are taking a much-deserved vacation from the so often troublesome Mushroom Kingdom. Only, they quickly find out that there is trouble amuck at their island destination. A culprit has coated the world with goop and paint. Even worse, according to the locals he just happens to look like Mario. Mistaken for the true offender, Mario's would-be vacation instead turns out to be another day on the job as he is convicted of the villain's crimes and is ordered to clean up the world with a water-spewing device that straps to his back, which just happens to add a whole new layer of depth to the usual platforming action.
Here, zelpikukirby & Goldfire use tools to show just how nimble the famed plumber can be. Focusing on revenge rather than reparation, they bring the perpetrator to justice after collecting only 43 shine sprites, leaving plenty of time for Mario and his friends to indulge in the rest and relaxation they originally set out to enjoy.
Note: This run is known to have a sync dependent on both hardware, and graphic settings. If you are having trouble playing back the emulator movie (DTM file), we recommend you watch one of the pre-made encodes instead.

The original Castlevania is set in the year 1691. Simon Belmont
must fight his way through the castle and destroy Count Dracula.
Challenger and Morrison improve the previous TAS by 3.92 seconds, thanks to several new skips, different strategies for 2 bosses, and a better turnaround trick. Please read the authors' comments for more details.
The MSX version has been TASed as well!
There is also a run of this game which destroys as little as possible.

EarthBound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.
It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.
In contrast to the in-bounds run of this game, this run skips most of the plot. There are several major collision detection bugs, including one showing that the Skip Sandwich is a fitting name for the item in ways the developers never intended. The author is able to move around the game's areas freely, completing the bare minimum number of tasks needed to keep the final battle from locking up.
This is an improvement over the previous submission by 00:13.28 seconds thanks to better optimizations.

SteamWorld Dig 2 is a Metroidvania-styled game released in 2017 by Image & Form, where an underground mine is explored by digging and collecting resources. As opposed to its predecessor SteamWorld Dig, the levels are not procedurally generated, except for the location of resources.
This TAS by keylie finishes the game as fast as possible by skipping upgrades and manipulating the level layout.
The encodes feature commentary by the author as soft subtitles.

Ever since Morimoto published his legendary movie in mid-2003, the players at TASVideos have repeatedly made it faster and faster and even faster! Of course, there doesn't ever seem to be a stop for when it is fastest.
This movie is 00:00.60 seconds faster than the previous movie. Most of the improvement comes from Bowser's Castle, where the authors didn't have to lose time in order to get a favourable Bowser pattern. For more details, see the run's comments.

Samus's first adventure is retold in Metroid: Zero Mission with extra storyline, extra items and on a system with a better graphics processor. This run completes the game with 100% item collection, at least as far as the end-of-game display is concerned.
This run is an improvement over Dragonfangs's previous work. It saves about 4 seconds of In-Game time, but uses a new route that removes lots of door transitions, saving about 20 seconds of real time. The previous run used VisualBoyAdvance that runs this game inaccurately fast compared to BizHawk (mGBA core) used here, which is why the movie time appears longer.
There is also an alternate YouTube stream featuring audio commentary by the author as well as members of the speedrunning community.

Axiom Verge, released in 2015, is a 2D Metroidvania centered around the protagonist Trace, a scientist who finds himself on the world of Sudra after an experiment gone wrong, separated from Earth by a deadly void called the Breach. When Trace arrives on Sudra he finds its civilization collapsed due to the release of a deadly pathogen in the act of biological warfare. With the help of the Rusalki — giant war machines that guard this world — Trace has to uncover the truth behind the fall of Sudra, confront the perpetrator behind it, and return back to his home world across the Breach.
Axiom Verge takes heavy inspiration from early Metroid games and some other platformers of the era and employs a number of unconventional storytelling and gameplay design decisions, and is all-around well-polished. If you enjoy action platformers or exploration-driven games with a solid sci-fi plot, playing through the game before watching the TAS is highly recommended so that the latter 1/4 of it (and especially the 4th boss, Vision) become easier to comprehend.
keylie improves the previous TAS by almost 3 minutes thanks to getting the grappling hook, better optimisation, and skipping one of the bosses. He completes the game's speedrun mode (which shows an in-game timer and disables all cutscenes) in 25:09.24 by the in-game timer, picking up 15% of items.
Boss times: 02:26.52 (Xedur), 05:39.08 (Telal), 11:02.19 (Uruku), 18:20.54 (Vision), 20:23.42 (Ukhu).

In accordance with standard procedure, Samus discarded all of the items she collected on previous adventures before embarking on this one.
Super Metroid has a wide variety of time-saving glitches to exploit, many of which are explained on the Super Metroid Tricks page. Be sure to check it, as well as the author's comments, for more information on the improvements. This is an improvement of 6:28.70 over the predecessor movie.
If you prefer to watch the fastest completion without getting all the items and without any large skip glitches, check out this run of Super Metroid in 35:58 by Sniq.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an RPG made by Nintendo and is the second game in the Paper Mario series following Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64. It incorporates a world made of paper and turn-based battles, much like its predecessor. In it, Peach asks Mario to help find a treasure hidden in Rogueport. When he arrives, she is missing as usual, and he must collect 7 Crystal Stars and open the Thousand-Year Door to save her and collect the treasure.
Using new glitches to skip the Blimp Ticket, Zess T.'s contact lens, and part of the Shadow Queen sequence, Malleoz improves his previous TAS by nearly sixteen minutes.
Author's vocal commentary during the run's video can be watched on YouTube which also features a detailed overlay.
