The Legend of Kage 2 (影之伝説, Kage no Densetsu 2) is an action-adventure game for the Nintendo DS. It is the sequel to The Legend of Kage (1985).
The player takes control of either Kage (the ninja from the first game), or Chihoiro (a kunoichi from Iga). Their mission is to rescue Princess Kirihime who has been kidnapped by the demonic warlord Yoshiro Kuyigusa and his aide-de-camp, the rogue samurai Yukinosuke Riko, in an attempt to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate.
The game consists of 13 stages, with a boss fight at the end of each stage.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.7
  • Beat the game as fast as possible
  • Played as Kage

Comments

  • Most stages consist of sprinting and jumping past everything.
  • There are some instances (other than the boss fights) where enemies must be defeated to progress.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Fixed movie header to mention good ROM since it syncs on it.
feos: At a glance it looks like simply using clones on bosses would be an easy improvement. But you still have to charge the skill to spawn the clones, and the movement in this game is extremely limited, especially during jumps. Using a clone while jumping should indeed cover more distance with attacks, but due to air dashes it's quite hard to figure out decent routing even for one boss. While charging you're also losing time you could be hitting the boss. And the shurikens are almost useless with their microscopic damage.
While it looks like the run can be improved by using the skills more, it's hard to actually prove it would save time even on one boss. Looks like a low hanging fruit, but non-trivial to implement. Accepting.

Confirming this run does sync on a good dump (the Venom dump is a bad dump, note for publishers when cataloging).

ninespaces, are you using spells and skills throughout the run?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

No. It seemed that the amount of time to get them and set them up probably wasn't worth it, compared to just slashing through everything. That said -- I put this together fairly quickly, so I won't be surprised if I'm totally wrong!

The last 2 bosses take so long that I was curious if some spells/skills could help. I see some skills are given to you by the game, are they of any help anywhere? The guide says they are given randomly, so probably makes sense to check if it's feasible to manipulate them. Of course if this would imply rerouting the whole thing, we wouldn't demand it right away, but sounds worth checking for a potential improvement. Still the last 2 bosses look really annoying :D

This was a pretty cool game I didn't know before. I really like the music. Overall, the TAS was quite entertaining. The level design was overall quite simplistic, but the TAS moved through it with ease, and dealt the mandatory fights efficiently. Some of the more agile boss fights, like the Cave Boss or the Spider Demon stood out. Yes vote.
