[3939] GBA Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue by Mittenz & The8bitbeast in 14:58.41 since it has incredible backwards facing movement speeds that seem to even allow you to outpace the camera at certain points.

I’ll give one. The tass makes use of damage boosts to move insanely fast to the goal. Not only that but it uses it in conjunction with out of bounds clipping, which allows to skip almost every stage. To me that’s pretty fast.. Irrelevant.

I want to nominate [4083] PSX Spyro: Year of the Dragon by Nitrofski & lapogne36 in 22:20.54 for the strong usage of proxies being used to zip Spyro across several levels, admittedly not to the same extent as the proxies used in Spyro 2. If I did this nomination wrong just strike it out as a mod edit.

[3948] GBA Sonic Advance "Knuckles, No Ultraspindash" by GoddessMaria in 13:14.31. Much like most sonic movies, this one features lot of fast paced movement and fast running, so much that the char leaves the screen quite a bit. Also: [4014] PSX Disney's 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue by Avouca & Custom in 18:00.20 this stands out to me due to the rolling tech being easily abusable. If you roll on certain surfaces, you gain a ton of speed on your next roll.

There you go: I still remember the first time I've watched a TAS that uses the Wall Surfing technique. At that time I was still willing to help nahoc with the making of his first TAS. As one of the first things to do, I suggested him to look for existing TASes on YouTube... In a matter of seconds, I got him giving an "oh my god" follow by the video url of Matt Schepcar's unfinished TAS. I was completely clueless of what he was about, until I opened the video and I instantly understood, as my reaction was the same. It was so impressive that at first I thought that some kind of cheats were used, also because there was no mention about TASing in that video. With some Googling, we both found Matt Schepcar's blog, where there was a post about how to write a bot... for TASing purposes. Still unbelieving, I've taken the laziest route possible: I've tried replicating the TAS of that first level by visually analyzing the video frame-by-frame. And I succeeded. But there was no point in copying without understanding what was going on... so I've tried to replicate the Wall Surfing trick from scratch. And I failed. All I could do was to note that the trick couldn't be executed without a bot. Seeing there was some serious work to do in order to achieve actual results, I gave up with this game and left the job to nahoc and E-Sh4rk. It has not been hard for them to figure how to make the appropriate bot, as they're both programmers. The only job left was to write a Lua script and explain them the Movie Rules thoroughly. On their own, nahoc and E-Sh4rk, did great with the rest. Not only they mastered botting of this game, but they even managed to beat Matt Schepcar's times! But that's not all. They also introduced the Out of Bounds techs, that allow to take advantage of something that we could describe as parallel universes... The final product turned out even better than what I imagined. The character moves so fast that you can barely follow what's going on... actually, the first time anyone witnesses it, has a hard time just at realizing that the level has been already beaten. Everything happens so fast that the voice saying "start!" and "goal!" fills more time than actual gameplay itself. It's also nice to hear the continuous noises of the walls getting hit, as anomalous and erratic sounds are often a characteristic of advanced TASing. And it gets better. Later levels will end before the goal zone could even get in sight, thanks to sophisticated OoB trickery. It's not just faster than RTA, it's MUCH faster. To the point that even people used to watch TASes could not expect it. Other TASes that achieve similar results exist, but I didn't seem them appearing during this year. For these reasons, I deem [3933] GBA Kuru Kuru Kururin by mohoc & E-Sh4rk in 06:11.59 to be a movie applicable for this nomination.

[3998] Linux Mari0 "warps" by Masterjun, lexikiq & dwangoAC in 01:06.93 because Mario flings out of the portals so fast, he goes through the stages at a breakneck pace (1-1, 1-2 and 8-4 are completed a lot faster than in the published TASes of the original NES version due to the speed Mario comes out of the portals). It also requires slowed down encodes (so one can follow the pace) due to that.

In terms of sheer pace it's almost definitely one of the highest ones for this year.

[4034] NES Donald Land by FatRatKnight, pirate_sephiroth, Exonym, Bloopiero, The8bitbeast, Mittenz, tjblakely, lapogne36 & Memory in 08:36.13 Reason for this is because the abuse of apples and the pattern they are thrown makes Donald speed through levels so fast that the screen cannot keep up with the player. It’s like breaking the sound barrier but for graphics.

I'm surprised this movie wasn't nominated so far: I nominate [4086] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles "ring attack, newgame+" by Evil_3D, TheYogWog & kaan55 in 1:26:11.12. Explanation: On one side the TAS covers a lot of content, has a whole lot of fast-paced movement to show, and on the other side, whatever portion of it I check out, the TAS doesn't disappoint with fast movement (high ratio of fast paced sections to total TAS time), and not only sideways but it covers about all directions and that with quick direction switches. Also, the character doesn't only reach high speeds but comes with high acceleration to reach them quickly, so that at various points one has to pay attention to keep track of what is happening. ''Blink and you miss it''. There's also a good visual & environmental variation over the course of the TAS so that the fast motion doesn't get repetitive or easy to expect/predict. There is wall-/floor-clipping and zigzagging and often one sees the environment on the screen to just fly by. I think off-screen character movement is not featured in it, but character movement happens visibly in front of the surroundings aswell as hidden behind the scenery at other times, keeping the viewer busy trying to make out where the character will appear again. I'm also nominating and by that seconding EZGames69 on [3948] GBA Sonic Advance "Knuckles, No Ultraspindash" by GoddessMaria in 13:14.31 for sharing many of the properties with which I described the other Sonic movie above, and this movie here also has the character moving offscreen by going faster than the screen can keep up with the character at least at 1 point. Furthermore, I'm nominating [4089] Linux Celeste "100%" by euni, fishmcmuffins, keylie, dahlukeh & Lanvilla in 1:27:36.12. While overall, this to me appears to be more calm compared to the two movies that I mentioned above, for a fair perspective however, I think one should also consider that this is partially due to the fact that the screen is further zoomed out and seems to be better at moving alongside with the character, while the character movement itself chains many jumps, restlessly bends them around obstacles or zips through them and frequently flies from one side to the other.

So I noticed that my Sonic tas is currently tied with Celeste for 1st. I'd like it to stay that way if possible. Without getting into too much detail I think that Celeste tas is very entertaining and very well done. Plus it's a great contender for this particular award. I'd be very happy to share this award with those authors.
