The downfall of freenode A lot of things have happened with IRC network freenode over the course of the last week. The roots for this trace back to 2017, when the ownership of freenode was transferred to technology entrepreneur Andrew Lee, alias rasengan (founder of VPN service PIA). freenode staff were made to believe at the time that this was just for funding and it would not impact the operations of the network. Earlier this month, several freenode staff members announced their resignation, in response to an apparent hostile takeover by Lee. Volunteer staff members were being forced out in favor of operator spots that have been offered "for money or revenge". This was the first sign that major things were coming down on freenode. The former freenode staff members have set up a new IRC network, Libera Chat. Many channels and users have already moved from freenode to Libera. This was only where the issues would start, as the effects of the takeover would start to become apparent. One of the first changes was an update to freenode's policy page, removing references about disallowing hate speech on the platform. This is a major red flag - and many who weren't considering moving out before, would definitely start considering moving out now, lest they get associated with a network's implicit endorsement of hate speech. freenode's new owners and operators also did not take well towards the backlash they've received and the users trying to abandon ship. Their response includes seizing or sabotaging IRC channels that have announced their intents to migrate to Libera or another server - this notably was done to endrift's #mgba channel. It is made all too clear that any channel that is even considering moving out from freenode will be punished. Also, one of the new freenode staff members is apparently known for impersonation/identity theft and harassment. What this means for TASVideos Ever since February 2005, more than 16 years ago, TASVideos (then NESVideos) has hosted #nesvideos and later #tasvideos on freenode IRC as one of the main ways for site members to congregate and communicate with each other. Starting now, we will no longer be using freenode's IRC services, nor will we support or endorse any of their recent practices. Nach is in the process of moving channel services to #tasvideos at Libera (irc://irc.libera.chat/tasvideos) - this will be the new go-to channel for all your IRC chatting needs. We will be updating all IRC references on the site accordingly.

It should be noted that since Lee's hostile takeover, a very large amount of freenode staff members resigned and moved to Libera.Chat. Here's an Ars Technica article on the subject matter.

Normally I would say that the actions of the resigning freenode staff also seem a bit suspect and give freenode the benefit of the doubt.... However I also have a registered channel with a single # nobody uses any more so I set the topic to include "(Not on libera.chat)" and it was hostile takeover'd a few hours ago. So my impressions of freenode have taken an immediate nosedive, validating the claims of hostile channel takeover. Edit: the channel was in an abandoned state, and freenode pushes that this is an old policy being enforced. But there are still complaints from other HUGE names (eg: gentoo) this happened to them and those are definitely not abandoned. So could be either one, or both. Either way, my new opinion stands.

Not all of that is necessarily true. See this from a respected member of the community: https://gist.github.com/prawnsalad/4ca20da6c2295ddb06c1646791c61953

Some former Freenode staff members who quit set up the new network. Many big names have moved, but from several people I spoke too, not everyone wants to move. Libera Chat also does not yet have the same network capacity that Freenode currently has.

However that's not on the actual site. See: https://freenode.net/policies To quote:
Unlawful activities and related support activities are considered off-topic, as are inappropriate advertising, heavy media file trading, proprietary game software modding, warez, porn and various forms of antisocial behaviour, including (but not limited to) political, racial, ethnic, religious or gender-related invective. In accordance with UK law freenode has no tolerance for any activity that could be construed as: incitement to racial hatred incitement to religious hatred or any other behaviour meant to deliberately put upon a person harassment, alarm or distress. We do NOT endorse or encourage discrimination on the grounds of e.g. race, religion, gender or sexual preference and operate with a zero-tolerance policy for libel and defamation. While we believe in the concept of freedom of thought and freedom of expression, freenode does not operate on the basis of absolute freedom of speech, and we impose limitations, e.g. on "hate speech".
A downside of Libera Chat is also that it is now bound by Swedish Law, which we have to ask whether that's a problem or not. I am currently in the process of getting Libera Chat ready, however if the users won't move to Libera Chat, and continue to prefer Freenode, then that is moot.

Granted, my viewpoint is limited since I'm not on IRC anymore, but from the logs being posted on Discord, I don't see a single person who wants to stay on Freenode. The active IRC regulars all seem to want the channel to be moved across to Libera as quickly as possible. Even if there are a couple people who explicitly don't want to move for some reason, the amount of information that's spread out there about this whole situation makes me feel that making the move anyway is absolutely in the best interests of the site overall. Even if there is a bit of false information mixed in, there's far more than enough that IS actually true: Hostile takeovers of channels for simply mentioning Libera (even ones that are explicitly saying they are not moving, as DeHackEd pointed out), banning anyone who even INCREDIBLY VAGUELY criticizes them, policy updates where people are literally asking "can i be racist now???"... This is all very public information. If we stay on Freenode, it's absolutely going to look like we support this abhorrent behavior. I imagine your hesitance to move is just that and not actual explicitly advocating what Freenode is doing, but I don't quite think it's logical hesitance given the sheer amount of true information out there. For the sake of the site and how we are perceived in the community, we should absolutely move as soon as possible.

I spoke to a few people privately who told me they want to stay on Freenode unless things get bad. From my perspective channel takeover is very very bad, however, ordinary users don't see that as a problem till it affects them.

None of that is in the officially published Freenode policy on their site.

I'm not hesitating at all. The moment I saw what was going on, I set up stuff on Libera Chat, and started working on some other things we need for the move. However, until today only 3 people from #tasvideos moved to Libera, despite me mentioning last week people should sign up to Libera. The larger network as a whole also only saw a small % of users currently migrate. However, if we force people to a new server, and they don't come, it's an issue. Part of the issue may be is that Libera is currently having capacity problems (probably due to services being swamped with new users setting stuff up). My hope is in the coming days we see most of the users migrate, and Libera works out whatever troubles they have. Unfortunately they do not yet have the capacity Freenode has (most of the sponsors are still sticking with Freenode?), and some stuff hasn't been setup on Libera yet.

The reason many of us/them/whatever haven't packed up and moved to libera yet is exactly because they were waiting for you, the channel head, to make a concrete announcement one way or the other, and I presume it will continue to be the case until you do make just such an announcement. Libera still had the same official/unofficial channel distinctions that freenode does and it was a messy situation because nobody wanted to migrate without knowing for certain that they won't have to go through the whole "transfer channel ownership" thing that no less than four channels I've migrated with have had to do.

I asked users in #tasvideos last week to setup an account on Libera, and come join. Till today, I haven't seen anyone even bother. I assume over the coming days, people will begin to migrate. I purposely did not put in the topic or anything like that because of what I suspected the reaction might be from the Freenode owner.

1) That's not a definitive "we're migrating networks", that's a "hey we're thinking about migrating networks" 2) This thread is also dated today, so I guess there's a causation in the correlation between "making the thread today" and "didn't see people start joining on libera until today"

I only saw two new people since I saw this thread. Most of them seem to have come overnight beforehand?

At ~11pm last night (Eastern time) Freenode staff shot themselves in the foot by doing the so-called hostile takeover[1] of a number of channels. Having "libera" in the topic seemed to be one trigger. Some semblance of an abandoned channel starting with # may also have been a trigger. With all eyes on Freenode they pulled a gun and shot themselves in the foot. Anyone on the fence yesterday definitely head the gunshot today. [1] Channel unregistered with chanserv, re-registered by a staff account, channel modes +ims and forwarding users to ##<channel>, and topic changed to "This channel has moved to ##<channel>. The topic is in violation of freenode policy: https://freenode.net/policies" I have such a channel if you want to see it.

That's more likely a ham-handed attempt at enforcing topicalness - the channel policy for project channels like #babane is that they have to stay on-topic for the babane project. Which is not to say that it was a wise move - you don't encourage rational people to stay on your network by shutting down any and all discussion of maybe migrating to other networks.

Not once in my logs do you explicitly mention "Libera" in #tasvideos until the 24th (23rd your time). That's this week. All you stated about it that day was: May 24 03:45:37 <Nach> Spikestuff: I already set up libera last week. I'm just not certain we need to move there. Every instance of "Libera" from the 1st May: https://i.imgur.com/3jxA1l7.png

Spikestuff, from my log:
[Thu May 20 2021] [04:09:06] <Nach> A bunch of Freenode admins quit and they posted this letter: https://fuchsnet.ch/freenode-resign-letter.txt They're saying there's been a hostile takeover of Freenode, and all users should migrate to irc.libera.chat. Just for the record, this announcement is specifically what I was waiting for before jumping ship. I am not coming back to freenode.

Hey Nach can you provide the last line written by someone else before your comment, or by TASVideosAgent so I have a better idea of this log, or alternatively your timezone.

There's 2 standing issues between mine and your logs: 1. I don't see the nickname changes you make to yourself. 2. You don't have DreamYao's 5th edit on their submission. However. This doesn't help that IRC actually became a little more active talking about this issue so the fault of not providing a followup doesn't help. There's also the other issue where you could've pushed it to the forums like Mothrayas did.

Except people did PM me about them. So I don't know what to make of that.

You're right that I'm at fault for not mentioning it every day. I have done so today, and will hopefully remember to do so each upcoming day this week.

Feels like the kind of thing that should be put into a post in the News section, instead of a non-permanent connection-shaky chat message.
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

That's the sort of thing which will cause the Freenode staff to come in and take over the channel, if they find out about it.

If one has to be that level of cautious in regards to freenode staff, it's worth taking as many steps as one can as to move away from it.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

If that's the case it's even more important to officially tell everyone about it.
