Epic Pinball - Enigma

Epic Pinball was a collection of pinball tables noted for being programmed entirely in x86 assembly language.
Originally released in three packs on floppy disk. Each pack had 4 playable tables. This run uses the CD (aka Full) version which also contains an additional table--African Safari.
This TAS plays the Enigma Table as it has a relatively definable endpoint (though play can continue indefinitely thereafter).

TAS Notes

  • It's pinball.
  • Goal: Make the Enigma arrive as fast as possible.
    • There are 4 unique levels of play that must be completed for the Enigma to arrive.
      • Level 1: Hit all the red gems then hit the shoes to advance.
      • Level 2: Hit all the bar targets 3 times then the gem to advance. One 'death' (lost ball) is used here to save time.
      • Level 3: Hit all the diamond targets then the gem to advance.
      • Level 4: Hit all the gems. Then kill the teddy bear. Then hit the cone targets. And finally lock the ball to make the Enigma appear.
    • There are minimal opportunities for gaining extra points, and thus these targets are ignored unless hit by chance.
    • Once the Enigma arrives, play continues indefinitely by having the player hit a never ending string of red gem targets similar to Level 1. This is considered a bonus stage by the game and is not played in this run.
    • This run is completed by tilting out once the score for spawning Enigma has been awarded, then purposely losing the remaining balls. High-score initials are input then the credits are shown.
    • Table Nudging is used to alter ball movement. These nudges appear as jumps/twitches of the table on the screen. These are not emulation errors but intentional.
Potential Improvements
  • Though I've done the best I can to optimize this run, there are a vast number of possibilities for ball direction and speed on any given flipper strike. A change in timing to any given strike will alter all future events and flipper strikes. As such, it's possible that better 'routing' of ball strikes/direction may yield a faster run. Also, nudging the table can alter ball movement as well and can be performed on just about any frame further increasing the potential for different 'routes'.
  • RNG Manipulation? - If the appearing/disappearing bumpers in Level 1 are RNG dependent, I couldn't figure out what it was. It's not time based as changing the initial RTC does not affect them. Manipulating them to not appear in the path of the ball may be beneficial and could possibly yield a faster run.
  • As it's necessary to lose balls to complete the run, if a run that selects 3 balls instead of 5 in the options can match or improve on the ball routing of this run; a faster run may result. This would depend in part on the time required to change the settings vs time required to just lose the two extra balls.

I realize many of the other tables in the Epic Pinball collection besides Android weren't as well liked. But I had this when I was young and was never able to get through the four levels (without cheating in unlimited balls). That was my primary impetus to do this TAS. That and I needed a break from Space Quest.

I don't think any pinball games have a technical 'ending' where play is not allowed to continue. I do consider the Enigma arriving on this table as the point of no new content, and thus I claimed it as the ending for TAS purposes. I could have spent a bit more time and inputs to lose the remaining balls and get a game over screen, but those seemed to be pointless to me as the 'endgame cutscene' had already been viewed.

Oh... OK. Thank you for the information! I looked through the FAQ but didn't find anything significant about the requirements. I actually talked with mr. C-Square earlier and hopefully I'll progress from normal speedrunning to TASing (at least when it comes to one game, but that's a start, I kinda hope to gain knowledge to dissect some of other ones : ), his JPC-RR modification is, to say it delicately, very promising. Tho I'm kinda scared of the technical side of TASes, too. As for Pinball games, I'd love to see Pinball Fantasies, but that's just a wild thought : )

First things first, definite yes vote. I'll try and see later this week if I can figure out what's going on with the sound. I think I recall you ran into the same problem with your first SQ1 submission as well.

I can understand it, but don't be. We all started as newbies. The most important thing is to pick the right game to start off with. Choose one that doesn't require too much technical knowledge, and don't do one that has already been optimized to death. Most importantly, pick one you know well. There are many here to help, so post your WIP in the appropriate forum, and people will be happy to offer suggestions. If you're planning a dos game, JPC-rr is one of the more rough emulators out there, with not nearly as many useful tools as the others. That said, while most well known (and no-so well known) console titles already have TASes, the dos library has barely been touched, giving you a breadth of choice to start from.

First, I'd like to congratulate you for being brave enough to take on this game. The Epic Pinball Super Android table was a complete pain to run, although at the time a lot of that had to do with the fact that I couldn't even remotely run it at a reasonable framerate. I can spot some of the exact same methods I was forced to use to manipulate ball position and I don't see any obviously sloppy play here. You're right that better routing may be possible but the instability of hex editing makes rerouting cumbersome. Overall, this is well done. Yes vote from me based on length and content. Keep these coming! :)

When I saw the android TAS I thought "I need to see a TAS of enigma!". I loved to play this table, but it is so hard. Now that I watched the TAS I know I got to round 4, but I can't be sure if I got to the end. Nice video though, yes vote!

Well, I had been curious about the Enigma table for years, but not curious enough to actually buy it. Kudos to Epic for trying something highly original with computer pinball that would be highly impossible at a physical pinball table. Although the resulting table doesn't look particularly flashy or particularly fun. But that's the game. The run is solid, so yes vote.

Don't be. I had no idea what I was doing about a year and half ago. I second c-square's recommendation that you may want to try a different system before DOS simply because of the difficulty of using JPC-rr. In my opinion, any of the systems that BizHawk supports (i.e. NES, SNES, etc) would be a better option for learning TASing principles before moving into DOS (even though the available DOS library of unTASed games is quite large). And don't be afraid to use a game that's been TASed to death to learn with. You can try your own thing and compare it to very well known results that way, it'll help you learn. But don't let me discourage you! Get out there and get TASing!

This was a pain to run also even with a relatively decent framerate. One simple reason (among a handful) was because the key-presses had to be held across a frame advance to be recognized as opposed to other DOS games I've worked on where they can be pressed and released before the frame advance and still be recognized. I may look into other of Epic Pinball's tables, but offhand I don't know of any that have as definitive endpoints as Enigma or Android.

Had I not known about the Android TAS and saw this one pop up in the recent submissions, I probably would have had the same reaction. I also would have TASed it before this one as well had it not already been done, simply because it's the more well-known table. Interestingly, there is a 'Jill of the Jungle' table in the collection....interesting because of slamo's submission of one of the JOTJ platformers around the same time I submitted this.

It's not a very exciting looking table to view, but it was probably the one I played most as a child. Something about its variability held an extra interest I guess. As far as flashiness, The ball changes color each time you lose one (as can be seen in the difference between the first and second ball of this run). I considered losing all but the last ball from the beginning simply to play with the last ball because it visually shares a similar oscillating color scheme as the background of the table, making it quite difficult to see while playing. But for the purpose of the TAS, I figured it wouldn't make much difference on entertainment value and would take extra time and inputs to get to that ball, so I didn't.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. I saw the ending on Youtube a while back and frankly I was disappointed in the entirety of Level 4. Teddy was run over, 2edgy4me.

I was also disappointed by the Enigma being the robot when I first found out years ago. When I was young, I expected a puzzle to be involved somewhere in the game play simply because of the name. But as can be seen here, that's unfortunately not the case.

Hrm...of the files that I have, CONFIG.PIN and HISCORE.PIN (clean file) are different and SETUP.INT doesn't exist at all. The former changes every time I change the in-game configuration (Fast/Slow PC, Music volume, SFX volume), AFAIK. Could you post a screenshot of the in-game configuration?

My in-game config should be the defaults as I didn't change any in-game settings. I did test the game in DOSBOX prior to TASing to see if it would run with the included files (trying to eliminate all the extra GOG stuff). This could be why the config and high score files are altered. I'll check into testing if the inputs will sync on a new image from a clean install using the guaranteed unaltered files, but this may take some time. As far as SETUP.INT My game is the GOG version which is based on the CD version; that may make a difference. It may not be necessary for the inputs either, I'll check on that too. EDIT: It Desynced without the SETUP.INT file. Still have to check on a clean install image.

I won't be able to look into the sound issue after all, however here's the bat file I use for making encodes, which always gives me sound:

I also looked back at some old messages from Ilari. First, JPC-rr 11.2 doesn't work with general MIDI. You have to go with 11.6 or higher for that. That's not a problem if you need to. Use the upgraded 11.2 to create the movie file, then run the movie file on 11.6 or higher to get a dump of the midi audio.

Does it use MIDI audio at all, though? EDIT: Okay, I tried with the default configuration and the one matching with the CONFIG.PIN used in this TAS....but it loads the Deep Sea table (possibly because I included PIN13.TFP). EDIT 2: I actually get proper audio from a test dump I made (done on JPC-RR 11.8 RC2). But....yeah, the missing PIN13.TFP is an issue, as far as I'm concerned (pretty much akin to a "bad dump"). It is part of the game's files, after all.

By the way, the movie ends mid-gameplay. It probably would be better to suicide the remaining balls to at least reach a high score entry. Though I'm myself curious about the odd buzzing sound you're encountering. Could you upload an encode with the audio?

If the judge feels this is necessary for completeness (but the run is otherwise publishable), I will have them set the decision to 'delayed' and add the extra few inputs even though it will result in a slightly longer run.

As c-square suggested, I'm going to try and dump the movie with a newer version of JPC-rr and see if I still get the audio weirdness. If I get a good audio dump, I'll update the video in the submission text. If I still get weird sound, I'll upload a video in the discussion for you. EDIT:New dump worked fine.
