I'm going to start working on this again. This is a game that has so many new improvements, and I simply can't just ignore this game anymore. Seeing as how I'm now in high school, progress may be slowed a bit, but let me promise that it will be worth the wait. (I'll also be testing the Japanese version in comparison to the US version to see how much time is saved from text and if flurrie superslide time savers, which don't work the same in Jap, can still be done)

Why do the flurrie slides function differently in (J)?

Instead of sliding on a horizontal axis, it slides on the Z-axis.

Text isn’t taken into consideration when obsoleting movies. If the actual gameplay is slower, absolutely do not use it. If it’s the same though it’s your choice whether you wanna go Japanese or not.

The extra gameplay also won't count against you, so if it's faster, you should use it. The fastest version should always be used. No one wants to watch a version with more text and less gameplay.

…What the fuck are you saying? The extra gameplay does count against you. The fastest version is the one with the fastest gameplay. Text isn’t considered to be any faster in terms of obsoletion.

Yes, and the extra gameplay also won't count against you. If you switch to a version which saves time overall because it has less text, but also has longer gameplay, it will still obsolete the previous one, given that it is better regardless of those version differences. If there was a game with 2 versions, one that could be beaten in 10 minutes of gameplay with no text, and one that took 2 minutes of gameplay, and 6 hours of text, the first one would be preferred. I think you will have a hard time finding people to argue otherwise.

The only benefit from using the Japanese version that I can see is faster text. Plus, I would lose more time from not being left able to perform superslides. I will be losing more time than I'll be saving. So, seeing as how the Japanese version doesn't have anything else to offer, I'll stick to NTSC_U.

http://pastebin.com/QXh8HTrw Almolicious, who does RTA TTYD runs, created this. About 2 minutes can be saved compared to English.

Uh....Buzzy bettle fight? I don't remember that. Also does that account for chapter 3 being mostly skipped? Oh, and I believe it was mentioned the (J) version doesn't auto heal. Does the route still become faster due to this?

That’s something you left implied before. Ok then, I’m not sure what’d happen in that case. Your example is probably completely irrelevant though, considering that it will never apply to reality. If it happened for one game, that could be the exception rather than the rule.

Ultimately, the negatives outweigh the positives. Being unable to perform superslides will cost me more than 2-3 minutes. I'll stick to NTSC_U. I have a dtm of a new run I made up to hook tails castle (several months old), so I may continue from there. I would add the cutscene walk there and work from there onward.

Although, thinking about it, even in the case that such a run would be published, someone else could come along and obsolete it by switching version and implementing the version-specific tricks while keeping everything else the same, so what’s the point of even using the J version?

I'll start working on this when I get home from school and find how much time the Hooktail cutscene walk can save.

It turns out it is only 12 frames faster, but I'm willing to go back to that point just for it. It looks really cool :P

1. Has the punis glitch fixed in the latest revision? If so does it sync? 2. How many new things have been discovered since you lasted started the TAS? Nice to know you're starting again. :)

The Punies should work relatively well in master, there's a Pull Request to completely fix everything (bounding box related) as well. It should be noted that bounding box isn't actually for collision detection stuff, but rather some graphical effects.

The Puni graphical glitch is fixed. Not many things have been found besides the sequence glitch that Almost uses. I can't wait to work on it. :D

I was going to keep this a secret but decided against it. Ultra Hammer early is possible on Japanese. https://youtube.com/watch?v=28z7IucO-Rw

1. What happens if you try it in (U)? 2. What does this affect in a TAS? Does it enough save time to warrent a version change?

Flurrie superslides work differently in Jap, moving you on the Z-axis instead of the X-axis. It does not work on NTSC then. This allows me to skip Super Hammer in Chapter 3. The route will now be to immediately go to the vent in Grubba's office. You can actually get Yoshi post-chapter 3. This trick is incredibly precise. It's frame perfect in several different parts.

Ah. Well, it was mentioned before that koops skip was impossible until new discoveries, so who knows? ;)

Can anyone explain to me what the current route is and how this "Ultra hammers early" trick is going to be useful? I haven't been keeping track of the discoveries recently, so I'd love some information to read. What is "flurrie slide"?
