Welcome to the TASVideos documentary thread! This project has been active since last Autumn and is currently being advanced by three people: main editor Svimmer and auxiliary editors thatguy and arkiandruski. The project will need more helpers later though. The goal is to create a 30-45 minute long introduction to what TASing is, how it works and the fruit it has borne. The up-to-date table of TASing clips can be found here. Note that there's other tabs for some more information. TAS Documentary Script (under construction). This will gradually evolve into a finished script. CLIP SUGGESTIONS (currently not active) Here's a summary of what I have to expect of suggestions: -a link to the [YouTube] video, preferably with HD options, and to the specific passage of play that you're candidating (right-click on the video and select "copy address at this point") -an explanation of what I'm looking at: What's going on? Is it manipulating luck, is it superhumanly precise, is it just entertaining...? Otherwise I might miss the point. Check the second tab in the table for more of the categories I've been using. -please mention what level/episode etc. it is so I'll know how to name the clip PERMANENTLY WANTED: -if you think there's a considerably better clip available from some game you know feel free to offer that one instead -if you want to contribute music to the video let me know what you can do and I'll know what to request of you later -if you think I've miscategorized something (which is a real possibility), let me know in this thread. Also for other problems in the big table. -if you have video editing skills, you might get to do something for the project later -just follow this thread! The community is being polled on many questions. CURRENTLY WANTED: -clips from a few arcade games -clips from other platforms you don't think are sufficiently represented In addition I should probably mention all of this again. An ideal clip... -is possible to understand without knowing the game -has a direct visual impact (i.e. looks good) -is from a game relatively popular for the platform -portrays a TAS-only trick -does it in under 30 seconds, the shorter the easier it'll be to write in These qualities form a kind of combined score that each clip gets given, though it's still quite subjective and not subject to refunds :P A low score in one or more areas doesn't mean the clip won't be used if it fits in somewhere. Check the more recent posts for updates on what is happening with the project. OLD POST FOLLOWS ----- So this came up in the IRC chat... There might as well be a new one done at some point. The only gripes people have had about it (feel free to pitch in on this), is that the game selection could be broader. There have even been new emulators on whole new platforms introduced since. There are multiple Castlevania and multiple Sonic series games for example. Therefore the purpose of this thread is now to start gathering suggestions for the next such site advertisement movie! Personally, I feel the ideal candidates for the movie are individual sublime moments/passages from movies that have since been obsoleted. Perhaps it is clear why. Another important criterion is that ANYONE can tell there's something special happening during that moment. Feel free to candidate anything you like though. We should be sure to throw in some arcade material. Find the best thing in Metal Slug, and the best in Capcom Vs. Important point: While crazy glitches are cool, and we should show a bunch of them, our video should highlight TASing as perfection, not just glitch exploitation. Therefore it should include some of those incredibly precise 1 HP unit left sort of thing, which you see a lot in Mega Man or occasionally in Metroid.

That bad dude in Goldeneye saying "Too slow James" as he gets shot in the face. Any Mortal Kombat 1-3 TAS. Probably the run where the character graphics use the health bar graphics. Earthbound running the end text, going into a battle, then saying "The End?" International Superstar Soccer Deluxe when the game going insane and yelling "GOAL!" repeatedly. Commander Keen 6 when Keen rides the shot from the gun into the sky. The Lost Vikings showing great teamwork.
When TAS does Quake 1, SDA will declare war. The Prince doth arrive he doth please.

We should probably keep clips under 20 seconds. The video can be any length, but our clip selection probably should not be more than ~10 minutes. A bunch of 3-5 second clips would be good just to show crazyness. Imagine where the last minute the screen says something like "Every game can be abused" or "Precisely play every game" and we show a whole minute of just 3 second clips going nuts. Start with 5 second clips, then go shorter to 4 seconds, etc..., end off with highly intense scenes like those from 4 player TASs or Marvel Vs. Capcom. Time wise, we can probably get in ~13 really short clips, 30 10 second clips, and 12 20 second clips with sticking to roughly 10 minutes of clips. 55 clips in all. Some other ideas: Jetpack Donkey Pack is also insane. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjTNYr7J_DY WarCraft II, some part on the water where a ship blows up another taking no damage while maneuvering back and forth. Edit: If we stick to ~55 clips, and we use every game/action idea so far mentioned, and use some generic ones twice, we still need at least another 20 ideas.

I hate saying things like this, because I feel like a demanding whiner with no ability to contribute, buuuuut... Whatever the new video turns out to be like, could we put in a little more pizzaz than the last one? The previous promotional video was just a random assortment of clips, with no rhyme, reason, or rhythm. As an example of what I'm talking about, how about using the video to brag about the way we do things, such as fast boss fights, then fade into a portion of impressive TAS battles? And then go on to "amazing shortcuts" and whatnot. Preferably set to the beat of whatever song is chosen. That is all.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Other than a broader assortment of TASes to chose from now, I wonder how a new promo movie could be structured. As an idea, I was thinking about showing one particular section of a TAS and how it got improved over the years.

Just throwing an idea for pacing/rythm... I think it would be nice to have, at one point and quite briefly, with a... softer (slower, more calm) music, a little sequence of extremely precise tricks in slow motion. I mean, tricks or techniques that really can be best appreciated watching them slowly. And then, the music and the video itself can go back to full speed (or even faster for a "grand finale") to the end. Why not include a WTF ending? I'm thinking obviously about something like the unexpected "the end" screen appearing in SMW without any warning after a series of "random" actions. That could take place, for example, when the credits for the video roll (the TASes and their authors' names).

To come up with many of the solutions in this TAS the authors had to disassemble parts of the game to find out what kind of things they could summon, when, and in which situations they would work. With tool-assistance the "springyness" of the wines can be abused to the point where this game turns into something completely different.

Grincevent's point is an excellent one. 10 minutes of nonstop high-impact TAS action is going to be exhausting to watch. There should be some consideration given to pacing. Most clips IMO should be relatively lengthy, to give the viewer time to figure out what's going on and why what they're being shown is unusual. I'd also suggest grouping most of the clips thematically. For example: * Start off with clips that show off precision and planning -- "normal play, except without mistakes". End with a close-up/slow-mo section of some incredibly tight maneuvering -- perhaps Gradius where the Vic Viper passes entirely through thin terrain and dodges lots of bullets? * Switch to talking about breaking the game -- i.e. glitchfest section. Possibly show in this section a "fully kitted-out" emulator with RAM watch, hitboxes, etc. to give some idea of how these glitches are found and abused. Culminate the glitchfest with a well-known game doing something very unexpected. My personal vote here would be SMW glitching to the end, but there are several contenders. * Switch to emphasizing amusement. Show off some playarounds doing funny things. The SMB3 playaround shell games, something from Scribblenauts (giving a chainsaw to the hairdresser?), Family Feud, I'm sure there are plenty more though I'm having trouble thinking of specific examples. I'd say the culmination of this section should be International Superstar Soccer with the announcer going "OH NO! OWN GOAL?!" over and over again. Of course, you'd have to cut the music for this bit. I do think it's reasonable to have, say, a minute's worth of short clips at the end. This would be a good time to show off the variety of games that have been TASed. I think most of the video should be showing off well-known games, since that helps the user in recognizing what's going on and why the TAS is so unusual. However, this section, since the clips are so short, doesn't need to do that, and can diversify more. Also, a suggestion for music: I think a TAS promotional video is much better-served by being lighthearted and silly than by being over-the-top melodramatic. So I'd suggest tunes like e.g. the SMB2 main level theme rather than, say, O Fortuna.

I'd rather another Ocarina of Time clip be used, because the one shown, staircase hovering in Dodongo's Cavern, is child's play and can be done incredibly easily on console. Perhaps something else from the 18:46:85 or the Majora's Mask run?

I know that several people dislike speedruns which are just glitch chaining, so I think we should definitely have some clips of things that are clearly intended, yet clearly done far too precisely anyway. (Also, we need some clear instances of luck manipulation: are there any RPGs with a battle system that runs fast enough that we can just have "CRITICAL! CRITICAL! CRITICAL! popping up on screen for a few seconds?" I guess the Tetris playaround would work well for that, from another point of view.)

For perfect luck manipulation you could speed up clips from pokemon TASes. (Geodude in gsc gets perfect magnitudes, critical hits and goes first against everything, swellow in rse is paralyzed yet annihilates everything with facade, rby lets you manipulate every single enemy attack to miss and all your attacks to crit, etc) And in Megaman and Megaman X pickups are manipulated to drop excessively in a few places (I know in MMX there's some sequence of 6-7 lives you can get in a row).

Despite being over 6 years old now, I still think Mega Man X2 is the best TAS on the site. It doesn't use any huge glitches but still displays a large amount of impressive variety. Something from the 22:10-22:30 mark would be my suggestion. You're also pretty much required to include Maxim of Dissonance.

The thing I disliked about the old video was that it didn't even try to educate the viewer. At no point does the video mention that these tricks are done using emulators, or how they are done. I like the idea of grouping games based on the techniques used (precision, luck manipulation, bug abuse, doing things for entertainment, ..), but I'd suggest prefixing each group with a short explanation.

I like the idea of grouping various scenes. Nach's suggestion of very precise survival could be one such group, with stuff like SM RBO, Rome in Commander Keen 2, and similar things. I think the included scenes should showcase play that's TAS-exclusive - Pokémon RB is very glitched for sure, but all the glitches can be done in realtime, so it's not a very good choice. For music I think using BGM from the games showcased is best. You could have 1-2 minutes of Mario scenes with music from SMB or SMB3, then Mega Man games with Wily Stage 2, Mega Man X games with Zero's theme, and so on. It'd also avoid copyright issues.

Vivaldi died in 1741. Copyright is not that eternal. EMI is claiming copyright on things they don't have any rights to.
