I got a sudden hunch after I accidentally found this trick in Streets of Rage 2 that let me Moonwalk with a very specific placement on the D-pad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTr08kczTvY I opened this game up in Gens afterwards and I couldn't do it, except with "allow up+down, left+right" enabled. I know it's a minor trick but this sort of boggled my mind. Bottom line: With this, it may be possible to do something like up+down, left+right in a realtime speed run. Does anyone think so?

There's a video somewhere of someone doing a L+R glitch to get through a wall, on a real console. It's tricky, but not impossible; it doesn't even require breaking the D-pad.

Seriously? Jesus, I'm outdated here. I didn't break my D-pad though. The controller was still fully assembled. Good to know that it can be put to use though.

I've had a lot of fun with L+R/U+D glitches on my GBA SP, specifically with Zelda: A Link to the Past. The D-pad is just flexible enough to allow both buttons to be pressed at once, and I've never damaged anything despite using the glitches many times. In LttP specifically, you can: -Skip straight to the end of the game (one of the published movies here does this) -Complete dungeons and collect items while it's still raining, i.e. never finishing the initial Zelda rescue -Finish the Palace of Four Swords (GBA version exclusive dungeon) with only 3 hearts Plus other "quests" you can do with the U+D glitches. So, it's definitely possible to mess around with multiple directions on console. Another thing I did once was take apart an old Gameboy Color and sand down the piece of plastic preventing you from pressing multiple directions at once. I did this specifically to try out some of the U+D glitches in Zelda: Link's Awakening. Obviously this wouldn't count for a console speedrun because I've modified the system, but it's still fun to try out.

That's amazing. I never knew that it could be done in realtime til I found that moonwalking trick. If someone is a good speed runner just think of the possibilities of U+D,L+R. Also I never noticed the SP had such a flexible D-pad. I even have an SP myself. Would be cool if U+D,L+R was easy to do on an SNES since I have LttP for it.

I know skamastaG performed some amount of L+R glitches with Super Mario World for SNES, so it's at least possible there too.

Speaking of, the PSX controller had four individual buttons instead of a D-Pad. Does L+R/U+D also work there?

If I recall correctly, the PSX D-pad is connected underneath the surface of the controller; it only looks like four separate buttons. I could be wrong, though. Still, since U+D/L+R has been shown to be possible on unbroken D-pads it shouldn't matter. The only question is if there are any games that assume the player can't press both at the same time, and have odd behaviors if you do (Punky Skunk, maybe?).

The original Sony controllers are connected underneath the surface, when it comes to 3rd party controllers it is not guaranteed... but they have others ways of protecting against U+D/L+R. I have a controller that is separate buttons, but they all go through a tiny chip instead... probably some timing gate.

I just saw a video of him using that trick. Man, I didn't know it could be done on SNES too. I always thought SNES D-Pads were too sturdy to push both directions. I need to experiment with LttP. It'd be cool to explore and break that game.

I always try to push both directions on a PS2/PS3 controller and it never works. I use my PS3 controller for emulators too and I can't make it work there either. I was thinking though, maybe if you press Left on the D-Pad and Right on the Analog stick, would that work?

SNES only works with some controllers. With others it does not. I can not do it on any of my controllers, whereas I could do it on JXQ controller.

I recently bought an original model SNES at a Play n Trade a couple towns away from where I live. They gave me a crappy FC twin controller for some reason. I'd use that to try U+D,L+R but it doesn't even work. Anyway, I'm playing LttP SNES at this moment and the original controllers do U+D,L+R fine (U+D is a bit harder to do it seems).

If you're interested in LttP glitching and haven't seen these already, there's a great Glitch FAQ on GameFAQs with a bunch of fun things to try with U+D. There's also a (GBA version only) "Minimalist" walkthrough that shows how to U+D glitch your way up to and through the Palace of the Four Swords with only 3 hearts and minimal equipment (I mentioned this one in my earlier post). These FAQs are really interesting and show just how much a game can be broken using a single glitch. I personally think the GBA one would make a great TAS if done right. It would pretty much be some item collecting followed by a nice boss rush through the Palace of Four Swords. I would love to make it myself if I actually had any skill at TASing LttP.

Actually, as much as I like LttP and want to mess around with U+D,L+R, I don't have the GBA version and still the SNES version is so finnicky with the D-Pad. I'm not exactly the biggest LttP fan in the world and I wouldn't TAS it (mostly because I suck badly at TASing. I have some videos on Youtube of some of my TASes) and because I have little knowledge on LttP. I grew up playing it is all. I'd like to see a GBA TAS of it though. I'm actually big in the Megaman X department, but theres just no way I can top one of the already published runs. Too bad U+D,L+R does nothing in Megaman games.

I actually have a controller I modified to allow for U+D/L+R and I have a 0 death game done in less than 10 minutes. (Well, it was 0 death until a friend started it up then saved and quit.) My controller mod is poorly done two though, I ended up using wire cutters to split the buttons so the get jammed together really easily. One of these days I should take it apart and file them down some so they fit better.

That sounds interesting. I would try and mod one but I only have 2 controllers so I don't want to mess them up. I did that Left+Up+Right glitch in LttP but I disassembled my controller to do it. I think you can do it without modding the controller at all, but it really is hard.

The one I modified was an extra I got from a friend. So luckily I didn't have to modify one of my normal two. (Although one of them might have been impossible to mod. It's the huge SNES Advantage or whatever it's called.) I've never tried it without modding the d-pad but I would think pressing that hard would break the button contacts or something. I don't remember for sure how the inside looks, this was about a year and a half ago that I did this.
