Here's a very interesting idea for a SMW TAS: Fastest time to get 99 lives. I wanted to see this done for at least 1 Mario game, but when I thought about it SMW was the only viable choice. SMB and the lost levels would involve simply bouncing off a Koopa Shell 99 times. And anyway, the game doesn't display the number of lives the player has. In SMB2, 1ups are near non-existant. In SMB3, the current TAS is more or less the fastest way to get 99 lives. However, SMW is a good possibility. Basically, I think the route would be basically the current TAS until 1-castle. At that point, Mario would pick up a big combo by staying on the wires and stomping Koopas. Then the TAS would go to 2-1, pick up the cape, and fly around killing enemies. Then dive to the end of the level and hit the tape, unlocking a bonus game, where he can get all of the same item. Movie end.

Fastest way would probably be to duplicate a 1up-block in Yoshi's Island 2 90ish times. Or wherever the first 1up block can be found. Edit: Like this.

Or, just get to Donut Secret 1 as fast as possible, grab a shell from the P-balloon bonus room, dump it in one of the depressed areas right below the pipe you exit out of, and stomp it repeatedly. Fastest 1-up method in normal play, as far as I've seen...in the GBA version, which has a 999-life max, you can get over 200 lives before the time runs out, if I remember right. :p

...except that SMB2, at least the NES version, actually has a max of P4 (254) lives. You're about 30 coins short. :p (Yeah, I know the thread says 99, but it wouldn't look right if you didn't truly max it out. Heh. :p)

You've never bounced on the Goombas that come out of the pipes in the beginning of 1-2 to get 99 lives? It's ridiculously easy.

We are trying to finish within the next two weeks, which should be very easy to accomplish. And yes, it might take some time to write our novel, but hopefully we can do it while finishing up the TAS so we don't have to wait to submit.

I think there should be a category created on the TAS site for: fastest way to get the max 1-ups (or extra lives) (no need to finish the game) Sure, I am more interested to see that for all SMB games. But it can work for other games. What do you guys think?

This might belong in a separate discussion thread in the General section if you're serious about it. Personally, I don't think such a category is needed. I am not opposed to publishing a movie like that in the concept demo section though.

Well, I did. I think what Fabian shown is the fatest way to get max lives in SMW. That is really what prompted me to post the question about "fastest way to get max lives" in games.

Thanks for that max point show! Yes, watching a max point TAS can be boring, mostly because it takes a long time to watch something that repeats. The entertainment factor is gone. However, I think watching a "max lives" TAS will be different, mostly because it will be short to watch. Although I want to see this for all SMB games, but this idea can apply to most (if not all) games. Of course, games that doesn't offer some quick way to get extra lives are not interesting to watch. I think a DEMO or concept TAS is ok. Not sure what others thinks.

Because I cannot think of any place in SMB3 where you have to be big (any powerup) to overcome the obstacles without super-human input.

SMB3 doesn't have as much easy flying as SMW so even without the powerups it'd look mostly the same. In SMW you can skip whole levels through flying, in SMB3 you can't (unless you use that P wing but that thing's strictly limited).

Okay. I am new at TAS runs, I've been reading the faqs and the trick pages for SMW. I understand the oscillating speed of Mario, but exactly how do we know when Mario is at his fastest value? I don't quite understand... Thank you in advance.
