Kirby's Dream Course TAS by snc76976

This is my first run, and first submission.

Essentials

  • Aims for the lowest score (primary goal), and the fastest time
  • Takes damage to get lower score, or save time
  • Reduces moving camera to a cup to save time (Especially its move at 8-6 of the extra course is clear.)
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Uses two water-bouncing tricks to get lower score (for 3-5 and 8-2)
  • Emulator used is Snes9x 1.51 rerecording v6
  • Use WIP1 Timing: ON (IMPORTANT)
  • Allow Left+Right / Up+Down: ON (VERY IMPORTANT TO SAVE TIME!)
  • Volume Envelope Height Reading: ON
  • Fake Mute desync workaround: OFF
  • Sync samples with sound CPU: ON

About the game (Quoted from gocha's TAS)

Kirby's Dream Course (known as カービィボウル in Japan) is a very innovative golf game. The game combines elements from the Kirby series (enemies, environments, and Kirby's ability to absorb skills) with the rules of golf, creating in a unique style of gameplay.
Don't be fooled, this game is harder than it looks.

About the run

My primary goal is to get the lowest score possible with the secondary goal of finishing the game as fast as possible. The following table shows the achieved scores.
CourseScoresTotal
Course 11 1 1 1 1 1 1 18
Course 21 1 1 1 1 1 1 18

Course 51 1 2 2 1 1 1 110
Course 61 1 1 1 1 1 1 18
Course 71 1 1 1 1 1 1 18
Course 81 1 1 1 1 1 1 18
Extra 11 1 1 1 1 1 1 18

Extra 81 1 1 1 1 1 1 18
In fact, RAM cleaning by instant resetting is incomplete, and the water-bouncing memory is not cleaned when instant resetting the game.
  • When Kirby has maximum top spin and he is on the water until first bounce, the memory is renewed.
  • First two bounces on the water just after the memory renewal never sink in the pond. (It is used at normal course 3-5.)
  • After that two bounces, the quantity of the slowdown by the water becomes smaller than usual until restored for some kind of causes. (It is used at normal course 8-2.)
(Quoted from gocha's TAS)
The final battle with Dedede is not necessary to unlock all of the secrets in the game, but it is required to see the ending, so I have included it for completeness sake. Besides, Kirby must defeat Dedede to fulfill his goal of restoring the beautiful starlit sky, right? I fight Dedede in normal mode rather than extra mode. In extra mode, Kirby deals half as much damage to Dedede, which prolongs the battle but makes it none the more interesting.

Thanks

  • Gocha helped me for course 3-5 in one, and I quoted his some comments. Thank you very much.
Enjoy the run!

Baxter: Nice improvement over the published run, accepting.
Aktan: Processing...

Why is this canceled? I'll check this out anyway; I'm looking forward to this once I have the time to watch it!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Congrats on finishing the run! I really enjoyed lots of incredible improvements (for both of time and score) of your wips on nicovideo. I couldn't believe my eyes. I'll watch your submitted run and vote later.
Retired because of that deletion event. Projects (WIP RIP): VIP3 all-exits "almost capeless yoshiless", VIP2 all-exits, TSRP2 "normal run"

those were some crazy strategies. totally worth a yes vote. Only thing that made me wonder: why did you choose the demo play a couple of times? for manipulation of the rng?

If anyone was curious, gocha's run had 12 holes which did not score a hole in one, compared to the 5 in this run.

Yes vote for kirby games played well. Standard golf games are boring. Weird ones with tricks tend to be more interesting, and this is an example of one of the more interesting types. The power usage made the holes a cross between a golf game and a platformer.

Let the ROM run for a few seconds before playing the movie
That's stupid and not nearly accurate enough. Either include it in the movie or don't do it.

Dare I ask how you managed to make the Grue barf it back up?

I think it was a bug, this movie never actually made it to the other forum.

I think he cancelled it himself by accident when editing, and then fixed it. I'm pretty sure authors can uncancel their movies, but not unreject.

I finally had enough time to sit down and watch this whole thing. It's amazing that it not only has more hole-in-ones, but it's also faster too. The use of the demo to influence water bouncing is very clever (though I don't understand the camera view thing in that one hole). It's a long run, but it's a work of art. Yes vote, and screenshot suggestion for the time in Hole 8-3 of the Extra Course when the fireball flies over the spike ball on the way to the hole.

I haven't watched the run. However, I know a part of your improvements, and it deserves a yes vote enough, so I've already voted yes. I'll watch the run probably on this weekend.

As for your version, this isn't needed at all, so remove it.

Not having seen gocha's TAS in a couple years allowed me to once again shake my head in disbelief at the marvelous hole-in-ones. How much brain power does one need to think such complex trajectories through? Anyway, thank you, this run was great. Please TAS more! Also, many thanks for the cutsceneless encode, gocha, it was very nice.

How many possible shots can you make in this game? If the number isn't too large, perhaps it's possible to write a lua bot that tests all possible combinations, to see if hole-in-ones are possible on the levels with more than one shot.

The amount of shots with no further input could be brute-forced rather simply, but unfortunately, this game allows a lot of input after the shots have been taken, with the small nudges you can give, activating powers, and even steering them as is the case with Tornado and UFO. what a long sentence
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.
