Yeah, editing that Chocobo World save file broke FF8 PC for me. It was great getting all of the items at first, but once I realized I could instantly have like 30 of the rarest GF items, it just felt like sharking. It might be fun if FF8 had a "New Game +" quick ending like in CT, but I wouldn't want to watch a full run with characters having Str+60% and Ultima Stones right off the bat.
Working on a mod of an old favorite in my spare time. PM for updates!

Why did you learn turbo for Quezacotl ? I mean the only place where (if I am not mistaking) we need to use a GF is the Granaldo fight, and Shiva is faster and give the same results. Moreover, you will learn the card ability with delay.

Good luck with this. But don't forget that in the deck of cards, you can transform the Gayla card with Diablos' STMagRF ability into 10 Meltdown

My original plan was to use Quezacotl to get the fish fins. However, the fact that you can get Card Mod right after Diablo, and that Quezacotl's animation takes forever, I probably won't use this.

Yeah, after seeing how easy it is to obtain strong cards, I may redo this.

So after doing some quick research into how Chocobo World works on the PS, depending on how the emulator handles the import of the Chocobo, it could turn into a very interesting discussion. Essentially the Chocobo World is a memory card with a display on it. So at the first available point to send the little chocobo to Chocobo World and back again 100% loaded would take very little time in game time. A speed-runner could very easily get to that point, save, and then spend the next few weeks/months playing Chocobo's world to get a fully loaded chocobo, come back to the game and suddenly have all kinds of really cool stuff and have spend almost zero time in-game to get it. I'm curious as to opinions on this. Personally if I could take advantage of it, I would. Being able to go straight to the best weapons of the game right at disk 2 is pretty cool to me.... Here's a resource on Chocobo World: http://hans.liss.pp.se/wiki/doku.php?id=chocobo_world_and_the_pocketstation

That's a fun thought, but I think it's really no different from starting with a save state or with preloaded memory instead of a hard reset. In that you're allowing something other than controller input to influence the game.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. But on the other hand it is not a save state, or an existing safe file. You could play the Chocobo game fresh at that the point that you got it. I think it would be up to the vote of the community to either say yes or no to a run that would use/abuse it. This particular game is unique in that ANOTHER game can directly influence it. And I don't think that anyone has ever used Chocobo World to improve their time in a speed run. I am wondering how much influence using it would have on it.

I think the time in Chocobo world would count, towards a speedrun. I'll have an update very soon.

Part 1 Link to video Part 2 Link to video Parts 3 & 4 to come. This run is turning into more of a test run. First off, I need to find a way to get 2 more AP before Evorett. (Shiva needs boost, and Quezocotal could get 18 more AP towards card-mod.) Also, I should really switch to an analog controller. What a pain.

I don't think there are any precedents for speedruns that stop and wait for a separate game, actually. EDIT: Part 1 got removed for being too long.

That's probably not a bad thing. I can guarantee you you'll have some regrets by the time you reach the end. And hey, maybe when you start working on the final version someone will have made a better SPU. :)

Exactly. In the end, though it is totally up to the opinion of maker of the run whether or not to use it. I do get the feeling that he's leaning towards "not" though....

Not exactly. When using data from "outside" of the game (i.e. not obtained through input from a power on with clean RAM) you really need to check with the mods/judges to ensure that it is legal. The only way to get the data from that Chocobo game back into FFVIII is by loading it. The data will have changed as a result of something other than user input. In a way, if I understand this correctly, it's really no different from starting from a save game.

Aren't these latest videos you posted recorded using PSXjin? The SPU still needs some work, though. It's not perfect yet. The sounds that enemies make when they die are especially different. Compare the sound Seifer's sword makes in your video to the real thing, for example.

Oh wow. That is pretty bad. At least the music works in this version. The previous SPU had horrible music issues.

To be honest, I find Seifer's new weapon sound effect to be downright hilarious. I don't know exactly how the PSX's sound system works but I suppose there's something similar to the NES's "noise" channel that isn't being emulated properly. That's not impossible to fix in the future considering the rest of the sound seems to be quite good. The music sounds pretty good (as far as I can tell in this low-quality Youtube video; the reverb might be a little off).

So, I need 4 more AP going into Dollet - This is why: Shiva - I-Mag Refine +30 AP Quezocotal - Card +40 AP Ifrit -20 AP Fasticolon-F -6 AP ??? -4 AP Shiva - Boost +10 AP Ifrit - HP-J +50 AP 6 G-Soldiers -6 AP Anacondaur -4 AP Shiva - Str-J +50AP Quezocotal - Card Mod +80 AP Biggs/Wedge/Evolret -18AP Siren L Mag Rf +30 AP Diablos -20 AP Diablos - Time Mag RF +30 AP Fake President -20 AP Two Soldiers -2 AP Ifrit - Str +20% +60 AP Iguinion -20 AP So, at this point, I'll have just enough AP to Refine the Quistis card into Samantha Souls, and then into triples. This will be just in time for the Seifer/Edea battle. If I don't get that 4 AP, I'll waste the 18 AP available from the Biggs/Wedge/Elvoret battle. The question is how to easily get 4 AP without wasting time.

Very nice so far! One thing that I was thinking about: how difficult would it be to manipulate Selphie's The End limit break? Even if it takes, say, 10 seconds of waiting to manipulate, it would instantly end even lengthy boss battles and be worth it.

Have you tried walking instead of running? In BOF 3, when I start walking 1 frame before a battle would start, I can delay the battle, and sometimes avoid it altogether

Thanks! Thus far, I haven't needed the End - the only battle it might save time in is Diablos - and it is incredibly difficult to get. Thus far, I've only found 1 random position (of the 256) where it works, and you must be crisis level 3 - which is also dependent on randomness. Plus, earlier in this thread, people requested it not get abused. I think my solution to Diablos is cooler anyway.

The encounter mechanics have been fully worked out by darkwasabi, the speedrunner - I am using those extensively, in a script. I'll have more explanation in the submission text.

Nice WIP! I like the little things you manage to sneak in when they don't waste time. A few questions though: - it looks like you're setting battle speed to ~75% instead of max. Why is that? - why do you enter the cafe at the end of the X-ATM092 sequence? Is it to avoid the FMV of quistis blasting the tin can? - During the dancing scene, couldn't you manipulate a critical hit when Squall steps on Rhino's feet?
