So first of all there's a separate thread for recommended for newcomers. Second of all there's already a Melee TAS in the recommended for Newcomers list. Third, do we need this second Smash TAS in the Stars list? Melee Adventure mode is easily far more entertaining.

Why not? It's a great TAS on its own. The game itself is a classic that it's still very popular and the mode played has seen a fierce competition. There was a huge work behind the making of this movie, by tracking down all known best times and trying to break them on both the Japan and the US version, thus providing important material for record keeping. Last but not last, the movie showed off different characters in action, and each time did come up with different movements for clearing the different levels, which makes the whole movie very diverse and entertainment.

This is the main reason why I was suggesting it. Melee's TAS definitely shows off some fast and entertaining movement, but only for one character, Samus. Maybe if there was a Melee TAS in the future that could show off all character movements then I would be more favored for that. But I do believe that BoP and BtT has a place in stars, not just because it has good ratings and even won the N64 TAS of the year award, but also because it also has over 100k views on TVC. The run is definitely well received.

I'll decide when I watch it. Feel free to keep poking me during the weekend.

I have always thought of starred movies not as necessarily "the best of the best" (as the official definition puts it), but rather a small sample of what speedrunning is about. A bit like: Newcomer: "There are thousands of TASes here! This is quite overwhelming. Which one should I watch first?" Us: "Try these, they are really cool." In other words, starred runs are more like representative runs for the site, rather than just a "top n list". I think Bisqwit's original definition (in the original post of this thread) is along those lines: "Special stars are movies that are particularly impressing, and worth being presentational material for this site." That being said, I really have to question if a 3-hour TAS, or even a 1-hour TAS, is such a good representative. If these are "check these cool ones first, to see what this is all about" runs, I think 3 hours is way too much. For that end, I'd say 10 minutes or less should be a goal, 20 minutes at the very most for extraordinarily cool or famous games. Just my opinion.

Ugh, I'm trying to watch KDL3. Currently 30 minutes in. And it's insanely boring. Standard Kirby gameplay and cuteness, not watered with any obviously crazy tricks or glitches. I only noticed something like a couple glitches so far. I don't know this game, but I've enjoyed some Kirby in the past. And it does feel like a glitchless walkthrough, simply using a few special game mechanics, otherwise just flying towards the.exit of the room. If it lasted for 10 minutes, it would at least not get so annoyingly old mid-way. But even then I'd still ask: what is so surprising about this movie that makes you want to rewatch it every once in a while, while still getting surprised over and over? Because I see nothing. And then, it lasts for a whole hour. Maybe it just happens to fit the taste of a lot of people, who simply love watching this game being played. But cuteness of games that are generally just not bad at all doesn't feel like we must explicitly promote their movies. They must be obviously special in something.

I don't think glitches should be the be-all and end-all of starred runs. But on the other hand, if there's nothing else special or interesting about the run...

Kirby's Dream Land 3 is a TAS that took a little bit of time to grow on me. I initially didn't recognize the significance of certain actions but when I did, the TAS became significantly more brilliant to me. It's hard when the only commentary is in Japanese however. For example when the co-op partner warps back into you, he pushes you ahead a little bit, maybe even increasing your speed but it's really hard to tell. Additionally the usage of co-op allows swapping between who has the animal buddy and allowing maneuvers like kirby essentially being thrown into the next door while Gooey gets the animal buddy to make sure they still have the animal buddy for the next room. Additionally every time I watch the TAS, I notice something new about it that I didn't notice before. For example last time I noticed the usage of Stone to roll down a hill to get a little extra speed which I thought was really clever. I'm admittedly a huge kirby fan, but I tend to be a bigger fan of the more modern Kirby games and definitely think there is merit to the run even outside its series.

While it has its moments, imo NSMB Wii isn't anything that special compared to other platformers in the tier.

Maybe when N64 emulation becomes more accurate for when a new Doom 64 TAS comes out allowing for the more major glitches to be done.

I'm totally down for replacing MSX's star with MS3.

I also agree. Even though the current MSX run is great, it's very old, while the MS3 run is updated with newer game knowledge.

Personally I found MS3 more entertaining than MSX. there's more content to show off and it's more visually appealing to me. So I think MS3 should get the star!
