Emulator: VBA Rerecording 1.7.2 v19.3, enable “Enable Up/Down and Left/Right”
This TAS completes Link's Awakening DX for the Game Boy Color in 5:40 (20403 frames) by abusing a warping glitch to skip almost all of the game. This movie is 3.03 seconds (182 frames) faster than hogehoge61 and pirohiko's version through many small optimizations and one new trick application.

To the Sword

  • Choosing the name “H” didn't waste any time. The Bow-wow bounce on the way out of the village didn't gain or lose time, but I did it anyway just for fun.
  • 2 frames saved by optimizing cornerboosts on the way to the beach.
  • 4 frames saved by damage-boosting off the octorok before the second ledge.
  • 7 frames gained by not sliding sideways when pushing the urchins aside. Even though it looks suboptimal, it is actually faster to just go straight until the urchin is moved completely.
  • Like before, the sword is taken by pressing U/D/B, which makes Link collect the sword without having to walk up to it.

Stealing from the Shop

  • 3 frames saved on the way to the shop from better cornerboosts, but 3 frames were wasted outside the shop to manipulate the shopkeeper.
  • 2 frames saved while stealing the shovel from better positioning in front of the shopkeeper (Link leaves the shop faster this way).
  • 1 frame lost while stealing the bow because the shopkeeper took longer to look away.

Setting up the Warping Glitch

  • 7 frames saved from a better Bow-wow bounce when leaving the village
  • 106 frames saved by using a glitched sword slash to kill the 2 octoroks. When the sword and shield are equipped, pressing A/B/Up/Down will make a glitched sword slash that can hit everything on a vertical line across Link's position. Some frames were wasted before entering the screen to manipulate the octoroks, saving time overall.
  • 2 frames saved from a better Bow-wow bounce before performing the Doghouse Glitch.

Doghouse Glitch

  • The doghouse is unique in that the entrance is very close to a side that Link can access. By clipping the edge of the doghouse (getting a few extra pixels inward), and moving diagonally into the wall, Link enters a version of the game's underworld, except completely glitched depending on how many enemies he's killed. Many tiles act in weird ways; for example, certain wall tiles teleport Link upwards when he steps on them.
  • 3 frames lost on the 4th screen in Doghouse World, but this lodges Link farther ahead, saving 4 frames in the 6th screen (1 frame saved overall).
  • 4 frames saved by optimizing Link's glitched movements in the 7th screen.

Final Boss

  • Total of 48 frames saved. Breakdown:

1st Form

  • 2 frames saved because the boss became vulnerable earlier. The form is defeated by slashing just as he lands, then again before he vanishes.

2nd Form

  • Unchanged.

3rd Form

  • 1 frame lost at the beginning because the boss only took full spinattack damage if it hit a frame after he became vulnerable.
  • 1 frame lost at the end to manipulate the 4th form into being vulnerable as early as in the previous TAS.

4th Form

  • 1 frame saved for some unexplained reason (randomness?). The shovel is again used in between spinattacks because it cancels the spinattack instantly and allows Link to begin charging up a new one much earlier than otherwise possible.

5th Form

  • Killed with a different glitched arrow this time, but otherwise unchanged.

6th Form

  • 47 frames saved because the boss opened his eye much faster the second and third times.

Thanks To...

  • Tompa, for giving continuous feedback while I made this TAS, and for discovering several of the improvements to the previous TAS.
  • Hogehoge61 and pirohiko, for making an amazingly well-done first version of the warping TAS and proving the concept possible.
Enjoy the TAS!

I was going to wait for the current one to be published, but that patient wait has turned into a long yawn. So in the mean time I decided to watch the run and give it a yes vote :-)

Oh yeah! I liked the final boss fight much better in this one since Link could at least be half seen most of the time, which consequently made Link's visual glitches much more entertaining. Yes vote!

Nice stuff with the final boss fight. Another great and nonsensical run. Yes.

I didn't think that it was added a sword slash to the glitched shield hit area. I'm very happy to see a movie optimized by professional nice work. I'm newbie, but the feeling votes for yes.

Nice done Stef. It's good to see you back at some LADX again. Hopefully there will be more any/100% running as well :). Voting yes to this.

I don't really "agree" with obsoleting a run while it's still on the workbench (unless, of course, you told the other authors and they were cool with it), but nevertheless, the run was great, so I voted yes.

Late yes vote. It's unexpected, nice fast job. pirohiko has made a video which shows differences of both LADX runs. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm4001181

Interesting, but what is it with all of the scrolling bullshit over all of these movies? The one of the SMW hell hack had that same crap (except even worse)...

Imagine youtube comments... but directly on the movie o.0 You can turn them off by clicking the little talking bird in the lower right hand corner. I actually think they're kind of amusing, especially since I don't know what they mean.
I make a comic with no image files and you should read it. While there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. -Eugene Debs

Might as well toss my yes vote onto this. It's a bit unorthodox to obsolete a movie still on the workbench, but I guess it saves the judges and encoders a bit of effort.

YouTube actually has something like that, but they don't bounce around and annoy the shit out of you. I didn't know about the turning them off bit though, so...

http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm4001181 I find this incredibly hard to focus on either.

Great video, but shouldn't this be listed as using death as a shortcut?

Death is not a shortcut here. The only reason Link dies is because the shopkeeper zaps him for stealing an item. After death, Link is able to steal another item. Both items are needed to defeat the final boss as fast as possible, but not as a shortcut. So no, putting this movie under using death as a shortcut makes no sense.

Using that death allows him to skip getting all of the rupees and buying it normally, so yes, it is a shortcut.

True... I would classify it more as death caused by a side effect of a shortcut, but there is no such category so ok.
