Post subject: Hardest/most irritating part of TASing

Most of you have at one time been thinking "I give up on this shit" and you find a new project. As the topic states, what is your hardest or most irritating part of TASing? For me I'd say luck manipulation, especially for the Zelda Oracle series.

"Hurray, half of the run is done which has been in progress for 7 months, a new trick was found. Time to restart!" ... Also, when there are like 10+ ways to do something, and you have to test everyone to come up which one is the fastest. So something like Brushy said I guess.

A thousand reloads over something that should be simple but isn't. That's what made me postpone Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi!. If running a game starts giving me a headache, I stop.

Physics models that require a ludicrous amount of manipulation for optimal speed. Press right for one frame, A for the next frame, nothing for two frames, right for eight more frames (unless you touch the ground on frame six, in which case you'll need to backflip into circle jerk while fellating your keyboard) etc etc.

Also, when you have done a level in a game which causes a desync in the previous level. It really makes no sense and is confusing...

In general: -Spending hours luck-manipulating a perfect situation, then finding out that there's a slightly better/more optimal possibility. While attempting to obsolete a TAS: -Finishing a large portion of gameplay only to find that you lost a few frames near the beginning. -Trying to replicate (or improve upon) the luck-manipulation of the previous run, and finding it nearly impossible due to different starting conditions.

luck manipulating in "JAWS" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", I gave up on both of them, surprisely adelikat did JAWS.

Working on a slow computer... Yea, I know you'll probably do the run in slow motion, but not been able to appreciate the run at 100% speed when playing back, is frustrating...

Most irritating everyday occurrence: Luck manipulation Most irritating once in a while occurrence: Finding a slightly faster method for level 1 or 2 when you're on level 13 of a hex-unfriendly game.

Luck manipulation. Horrible, horrible, luck manipulation... (Darkwing Duck, Boku Dracula-kun, Mickey Mousecapade, Goonies, Goof Troop...) :( I think I'm gonna stop TASing games that has any form of randomness.

When you've painstakingly done the first 25 minutes of a long movie for a game that can just not be hexed. Then someone finds a way to save 1 frame in the very first level. Not really enough to start over, but enough to be really disappointing... (actually, I realize it's not the worst thing ever, but this thread needs some variety) Also, when you want to do a game, but then you find out it's one of only a tiny handful of games which are not supported by the emulator, period.

You're welcome! On the other hand, in my limited experience, figuring out the mechanics "behind the scenes" seems the most frustrating to me. Trying desperately for 3 hours to luck-manipulate something that simply isn't random is more than a little disheartening to amateurs like me.

I would start TAS all again if there is a frame or few frame improvement in the beginning in long movie. The most hardest thing i have ever faced is screenscrollings in (crashman,woodman "upscroll withouth sprites",bubbleman stages) in rockman 2 because screenscrollings happens really rarely and my time is limited in these three stages, never succeeded expect wasting days with a random key input.

I have to say that, for me, the most irritating part of any TAS project I've ever done was trying to live up to the standard Nitsuja set when he started his S3K (Sonic + Tail) TAS while I was working on my S3K Knuckles TAS. Apart from that, I think the most irritating part of TASing is reproducing a glitch that you accidentally stumbled on, aren't really sure how it works, and recorded over in your own stupidity.

All these seem more irritating than hard. Hardest part? Looking at the decompiled source for the first time, looking for very specific things, when you have zero idea how the game works in the first place. Assembly is the least friendly language ever.
