The Ferret is back. And he means business. ... Hi! Good to be back.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

It's rather ironic that Ferret Warlord's farewell topic is on the same page as this one :) I expect somebody to come in soon and quote that forum community rule about goodbyes (something like "if a user posts a goodbye message, it's very likely that he/she will be back"). Although I guess I just did it in this very message... Oh well, no harm done.

In most other forums I've been to, goodbye threads aren't allowed. In fact, there was one forum I went to in which if someone made a good bye thread, one in which the user said he/she is not coming back, the administrators would ban that user so they really couldn't come back. This was done because the administrators loathed good bye threads, and loathed it even more when the user came back two days later. I had been at that forum before this rule was enforced, and I for one, welcomed that rule. It was made due to the huge amount of good bye threads flooding up the off topic forum, only for the person to come back a week later. If it was a goodbye thread for a vacation, they would just instantly lock the thread. I don't mind good bye threads for people who are leaving the site forever, if they actually don't come back. Once that person is gone, the thread becomes totally off topic and random, and sometimes results in becoming a great thread. It's when they instantly come back that bugs me. This case is okay since it was just a vacation good bye. Those are okay for some reason I'm not quite sure of.

First of all, those forums sound draconian. I certainly wouldn't want to participate in a forum with a rule that people aren't allowed to say goodbye. Secondly, even if this forum had such a rule, Ferret's farewell thread is different because
  • it was not an "I'm leaving forever" thread, it was a "I won't be able to be around for a while" thread
  • It stated a time period (2 years) during which he would not be able to be an active member
  • It was not a willful departure, it was because of a real-life obligation that prevented him from having frequent computer access

For Ferret it was allowed because he said he will be coming back :) And even gave a pretty precise time estimate. Oh, and hi! Welcome back, Ferret Warlord. How have you changed by the experience?

The rule is probably enforced on other forums because a lot of "goodbye" threads are troll threads. There's at least one such thread on this forum, but I won't link to it.

That wasn't a troll. If it were, the poster would not have subsequently disappeared completely from the community (not just the forums, and not just #nesvideos IRC) for a period of several months following. Certain of his other activities on this forum have been trolling, but not every action that a thief makes is a robbery.

yeah. it wasn't a troll... IT WAS MEEPERS!
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

I will when I feel ready to. Right now I am busy getting my life in order. Spending two years on the outside of typical civilization tends to throw your normal life for a loop. Especially my room; I need to reorganize my belongings so I can fit my luggage back in.

Hello. I don't have a clue who you are, but welcome back. Two years is a long time, so I have to say kudos for the commitment for something you believe in. I must ask; out of the two years, what do you feel is the biggest thing you took from the experience (if anything at all)?
<adelikat> I am annoyed at my irc statements ending up in forums & sigs

Welcome back. You don't know me at all since I only joined recently, but I first started lurking about the time you left, and I liked your published runs a lot. Especially Kendo Rage, I still enjoy watching it often.
