I decided to make a TAS of this game, as I think it has potential to be very entertaining. Here is my WIP of the 1st Act. I am using Ninja Gaiden (UE) [!].sms This WIP is testrun-ish. It is optimized in the sense that I found the first frame to do whatever move but i didn't spend too much time testing and planning strategies (that will be for v2). I've noticed that bosses unfortunately have a rather long invulnerability period. This could be a drag on entertainment value. But I noticed the special "kill all" attack (1 + 2) attacks the boss during his invuln time. This could potentiall save a lot of time. Especially if I avoid using it/taking damage in the level itself.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

This game is suited for a TAS :) Good work so far. Although I wonder if it would not have been faster to use that bomb thing earlier with the crows rather than afterwards. Other than that, I thought it was damn funny to see the first boss. Was he naked?..

Cool, I support this. I only saw the E version on my regular Rom site so I assumed there was no US. I guess I'll see if it works with your movie or try to find another rom. Edit: Alright, I found the right Rom and watched it. It looks nice so far, only problem is the boss invincibility time like you mentioned.

Many SMS roms labeled as [U] or [E] are actually [UE].
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Uh oh, spaghettios! This run desynchs at the ladder climbing on the rom
Ninja Gaiden (E) [!].sms
But works flawlessly on the rom
Ninja Gaiden (Prototype) [!].sms
Both using the newly updated GoodSMS3.13 as a reference. Since I've never seem another rom with "prototype" before, I'm not sure what significance it has in terms of quality, or whether it was actually ever produced commercially. It's certainly something to wonder about. As for the run itself, you're right about the boss being kinda slow, if bombs work better, I'd suggest saving them instead of using them on the slow enemies. Other than that, it looked like it's typical Adelikat play:)

I already did a Ninja Gaiden speed run here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77lqP9zj6-0 Maybe you can get some ideas from it to improve your run.

video 1 at 3:04 would it be possible to jump over that wall, as opposed to climbing down? [aimed at adelikat, not hazeus]

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/830785528/NinjaGaidenSMS-adelikat-v1.mmv Version 1 complete :) This was just a test run, which was good because I found some interesting things that would have caused me to redo. The fire wheel is very useful in this game and will save time in earlier levels. Though I worry that overuse of it will take away from the entertainment value of the movie. I'd appreciate some thoughts on that issue. Also, I guess I should locate another rom for v2? Mine says UE not prototype so I don't know how that happened.

Worked fine for me. It's a nice movie with fast-paced and cool ninja action. I don't think using the fire protection spell takes too much away from the movie, if it's used only if there are absolutely no other ways to save time.

My Ninja Gaiden ROM (which didn't desync with your test run) also says UE, but whoever said that didn't know what they were talking about: When I checked the ROM against GoodSMS and No-Intro, they both said it's the prototype. For the sake of disambiguation, it has a CRC of 761E9396. Is there a preference between using the prototype and the E version? (CRC 1B1D8CC2) EDIT: Interesting movie to watch, and I don't think the fire wheel detracts much from the experience.

looks good, a few things could be improved on (like ~28000 i think) you make a jump but hit the stairs/wall and that kills the forward movement... but as you said, this IS a version 1. I also think this should be the screenshot (31541) I find the whole "Ninja throwing snowballs at other ninjas" thing hilarious ^_^

All of them, in fact. SMS had no regional lockouts preventing U or E games from being played on E or U systems. Games would play a little slower on E systems, but I don't think there were any instances on SMS where a company actually changed the game for the E release. [quote="zidanax"Is there a preference between using the prototype and the E version? (CRC 1B1D8CC2)[/quote] This would have come out during the time when Ninja was a censored word in England, so if it says [E], is in English, and uses the word Ninja in its title, it is the [U] version, mislabeled.

Sorry if i make something wrong. I played this game when i was 6, and i make this just for fun, like a tribute for this game, that's my first speedrun (I think), i used the ROM "Ninja Gaiden (Europe).sms" it have 24 Minutes of Game. If you noticed the infinite shurikens, it's one of the bugs of the game, I used this trick for more advantage (Infinite when reachs to 999). http://www.4shared.com/file/147671798/84e0f9b1/Ninja_Gaiden__Europe_.html

I decided to improve the published run. WIP: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/38927273364213167 Using adelikat's run + v.youku video, I reproduced most of improvements that included on this WIP. 256 frames ahead. WIP ends before Stage 2 boss. I actually finished that boss, but I redo this run because of some missing frames. So, that's why this rerecord is higher. EDIT: KrazyRasmus's run includes 2 new skips on Stage 2 that I didn't aware before. I'm going to redo Stage 2 again.

I'm really happy to see that someone has decided to improve this TAS, as I've been wanting one for ages, without having the determination to make it myself. There are a bunch of places where you can use, what I call cancel climbing, to get past screens faster. Cancel climbing is something you can do as you wall jump. If you use a ninpo at the correct time, you cancel your outwards momentum, and can get back to the wall, gaining height, effectively climbing the wall. It's tough to do in a RTA, but worth doing a couple of spots. The main problem with it, is that it requires ninpo to do, but since you can get infinite ninpo fairly quickly by increasing your ninpo to 999, it's not really an issue. I also stumbled across this once or twice: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/49391400 Not really sure what happens there, but what I think happens, is that you fall through the floor, and start screenwrapping vertically really fast. You can still get through the level, but you're invisible and enemies don't hurt you. I've theorized that it's possible to do on any screen without a pitfall, but that might not be accurate. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about this game, as I've been playing it for a few years now, and know a lot about it. I can't wait to see the new and improved TAS. I really think it can go sub 14.

I'm aware of your RTA run. I improved carefully that shortcut on Stage 2 and I saved 112 frames! And that other shortcut, it saves 19 20 frames than my strategy used on my WIP.

You can also cancel climb over the first wall at the end of the first screen in chapter 4, also to get over the wall at the start of the last screen in chapter 7. Both should save times. There are other places too, but I don't know how much time they would save. Atleast in chapter 4 and 6.

I tested this and worked very well! Great idea, KrazyRasmus! That cancel works because of shorter animation when you uses a special weapon. EDIT: New WIP: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/39013129085866987 132 frames saved on Stage 2. 388 frames ahead of published run. I'm working slowly, but with a good result. :)

WIP 2: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/39060527451509198 626 frames ahead. Some of the new improvements is totally new, as well as a little improvement on the first hit on the Stage 3 Boss.
