It was rejected, because the author haven't done all levels. This means you have to do World 1-9 and World A-D.

Yeah, beating the game 8 times would get pretty boring.

What about starting from a save file? Yes, you'd still have to beat the game 7 times or whatever to create the save file, but the submitted TAS would only be the last time through all the levels.

Would they accept it then? If I were to publish it, could I also include the save file?

You'll have to double check the rules, but it's my understanding that you'd have to submit the save file (of you playing through the game however many times) to submit a TAS starting from that save file. However, the save file doesn't have to be of great quality. What I mean is that it doesn't have to be "TAS worthy". Time doesn't matter, you don't have to show off fancy tricks or anything, the object is to get through the game to unlock the other levels and to show the judges how you got where you did when you submit the actual TAS (the last playthrough with all the levels). Other games have started from a save file (see http://tasvideos.org/Movies-C4015Y.html), so I don't see why you couldn't do that here.

So would I start from a save file, or save state (you've said each, so I'm not sure which one to use)?

Use a save file. It's a far less arbitrary starting point. The only reason Super Mario Land used a save state was because no save file exists since the game cannot save.

Isn't a save file a rom? In my save files folder in FCEUX I already have a save file for this game and it's a rom. And they don't allow roms being posted here.

I'm not exactly sure how exactly FDS games are saved, but I don't see it as an issue. After all, that's what .ips patches are for.

I also realized I could make the whole thing (except for a-d), play that 7 times, make the save, and keep recording from the end of the movie.

I'm having a bit of trouble doing the flagpole glitch... Could anybody help me out?

Well, I'm not sure if Mario 1 and Mario 2J differ, but I remember you have to do a full speed backwards jump against the flagpole in away that allows you to get far enough into the wall. Press left for one more frame to pull Mario further in and jump at the right moment. I figure it's best to study someone else's input, subpixels, x pixels and speed to the frame until you get it right.

Here's the first level: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1044112327/Super%20Mario%20Bros.%202%20%281986%29%28Nintendo%29%28J%29-0.fm2 I'll rename it later, and there's a few things I want to say here: 1. After jumping on two koopas at once, I was going to get another coin, but that caused lag so I didn't get it. 2. I looked at maps of this world and the only mushrooms I could find that would be the easiest to get were this one and the one in 1-3. If somebody finds a faster way to get this, please tell me. 3. On the staircase, I kind of dance a bit. I couldn't get the flagpole glitch to work until I did this, so if there is another way to get this to work without doing this, point it out. This is my first TAS and I may have done other things wrong, so please show anything else that could speed it up.

Alright, on my head was that: "do that f*cking warpless TAS of SMB2J". I wanted, and I do. This is like "route to go, improve me, if you can". Wanna WiP? Here: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/856064143/Patryk1023-SMB2J-MARIO.fm2

WiP2: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1328415946/Patryk1023-SMB2J-MARIO.fm2 I stopped movie in 6-4, when Mario hits a Hammer Bro. Then a hammer kills Mario. To be continued...

Patryk1023: There is a published speedrun of the SNES version of Lost Levels on the site: [1134] SNES Super Mario All-Stars: The Lost Levels "warpless, Mario" by Cpadolf in 35:08.82 Just watching from the YouTube encode, it's roughly 50 seconds faster than your TAS at the point you ended. Considering the SNES port has more delays (such as selecting the game which takes 10 seconds alone) it's actually even worse. Also, if I recall correctly, the SNES version was preferred because it's possible to reach worlds 9 and A-D without finishing the game eight times or so first. I recommend you stop your TAS, or at the very least try to beat the SNES TAS.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

What about a Luigi version run of SNES Lost Levels? I figure it'd be as useful as the original Luigi version.

I have a SMB 2 Japan run. It is on youtube. URL:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcXqmcgMl-0 Also, i'm not gonna submit this to TASvideos for 2 reasons. 1: This run dont beat the current record 2: It was done on Famtasia.
So yea, how's it going? Currently TASing: Nothing

Nice. Good luck beating Phil! That would be an epic first publication.
