I converted the initial inputs from jlun2 into bk2 format and worked off of those from there. I couldn't find an improvement in the first section, where you have to kill 3 enemies and exit at the top of the playfield. Different start times lead to different patters and jlun2's was the fastest from what I could tell.
For my part, I reworked the Death Star fight by going left instead of right to get into position sooner letting us shoot from the optimal angle sooner. There's also an "intentional death" at the end that is inconsequential and just a byproduct of finishing on a different frame. We'll call it "entertainment." That's pretty much it.
Oh and FLASHING LIGHTS WARNING ETC.

slamo: There are some emulation differences between Bizhawk 1.6.1 and 2.8 - the game loads in 1 frame faster, and the transition to the second stage is 6 frames faster. Still, the gameplay in the second stage is definitely an improvement thanks to a better path. Accepting to obsolete the
