This submission is for the Atari 2600 classic, Adventure. Game 3 is basically a randomizer, so we force a favorable seed and win in under 2os using a very helpful delivery tool...

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.8
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses hardest difficulty
  • Clever use of mechanics to end input early

Comments

Adventure is a game that needs no introduction. It was a groundbreaking and influential game for its time, paving the way for adventure games and RPGs alike.
In this game, you're tasked with finding a magical chalice and bringing it back to your home castle, which sounds like felony grand larceny and it probably is. But this small kingdom hasn't developed laws yet.
Difficulty 1 is very straightforward, short and sweet to teach players the mechanics of the game. Difficulty 2 is longer and harder, with a bigger map and more stuff (including our best friend, the bat) Difficulty 3 that we use is basically a built in randomizer, where it takes the premise of game 2 and shuffles everything to different locations, and this is meant to be the hardest difficulty. All those locations are stored in the 128 bytes of RAM so we force a seed that has items in favorable locations, and with favorable bat trajectory. This is why we delay on the game select screen.
The bat basically picks up items it comes across and flies around with them. It can exchange items with others it comes across, including player held items. This can be bad in casual play as it could steal the chalice or otherwise be a menace. We, however, use it to move things where we need them to be.
Prior to starting the run we have a little fun with an easter egg which lets you move on the level select screen, I opted to run into the 2 to "change" it to 3 to start the game, similar to Mario hitting a coin block or something.
We start by grabbing the bat and releasing him on a specific frame and pixel to course correct him a little bit. This path we put him on will deliver the yellow key right to our door later.
Since we have RAM watch we know that the white castle holds the chalice, and the white key is mostly on the way. We grab the key and get the chalice and double back to a specific point. This point serves a purpose; we drop the chalice for later retrieval. The bat has our key at the door so we press reset to teleport back to the castle (this does not reset the game) and use the bat holding the key to open the door.
We then carry the bat to a specific spot, let him go so he can go grab the chalice from a certain angle and we get eaten by a dragon and watch as the bat so helpfully delivers the chalice right into the door of the castle, winning the game while Grundle digests us

Other comments

Possible improvements would be to find a longer bat path to the chalice that you could start earlier but the more variables you introduce to his path the less likely it will be successful.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Replacing the file since making the movie shorter while delaying the ending is an artistic choice left up to the author, and in this case there's much more impressive manipulation too.
Also changing the branch to highlight the skill since it makes the route inherently different compared to skill 1: some rooms on skill 1 are the same but other rooms are different, and some other rooms are absent, and some items are absent, and you can't randomize the ones that are there.
feos: Accepting as a different game mode since there's lots of inherent differences on skill 3, much more than on skill 2 as far as TAS is concerned.

despoa: Processing...

Looks good. It's not clear to me from the submission texts, though: Which game mode(s) did the previous runs use?
Current Projects: TAS: Wizards & Warriors III.

Well done! Throwing out a personal opinion here: If When this is accepted, I feel it should be accepted alongside the current run as a different branch (as opposed to obsoleting the current run), because the bat presence/manipulation introduces significantly different gameplay possibilities which yield a completely new approach the run that is simply unavailable at the easiest difficulty. The differences result in completely different routes and item use. If this is done, the current publication would likely need its publication ammended to include "easy difficulty" or something similar as its branch.

Thanks! And I agree with you. That's why I didn't mention obsoleting the current publication at all. Even though this is a "harder" difficulty, the bat really changes things up and creates an apples to oranges situation. The current publication is great and makes incredible work with the bridge and I don't want to see it obsoleted.

That was a very cool while being a very short TAS! Easy yes vote! - Currently published movie which uses Difficulty 1: https://tasvideos.org/4566M - Difficulty explanation from https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/atari2600/584543-adventure/faqs/6475 :
E) VARIATION 1 The easiest game. If you have never played Adventure before, start with this. There are only two Dragons (Yorgle and Grundle) to deal with, and two castles to explore. There is one maze (the Blue Labyrinth) to navigate. There is no Black Bat in this game and Yorgle roams freely about the Kingdom. He *may* be guarding the Enchanted Chalice. F) VARIATION 2 This game features all three castles, keys and Dragons. There are also two more labyrinths that must be navigated; one in the White Castle and another in the Black Castle. The Black Bat makes his first appearance in this game. This variation has "fixed" settings. That is, all of the items and characters will always be in the same place every time you play. Yorgle guards the Enchanted Chalice. G) VARIATION 3 This game variation is exactly the same as Variation 2, except that all object, key and character placement is now completely random. Rhindle guards the Enchanted Chalice.
- Personal opinion: this game is so short and not really famous one. Difficulty 3 is way harder than Difficulty 1 when viewing the differences. However a TAS sometimes able to complete easier/faster a harder one thanks to manipulation and using different tricks not present in the easier difficulty. Personally if I would be a judge, I would accept it as obsoleting the previous one unless the majority of voters/comments warrants publishing this alongside the previous one. I don't find Difficulty 1 worthwhile (fixed settings) to not be obsoleted by this one. Other tidbits: - Is it possible to implement the following 2 easter eggs without losing time? From https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/atari2600/584543-adventure/cheats :
Walk Over the Title Screen Start playing the game, then push Select on the Atari 2600 console in order to see the game selection screen. Press Down to make your character move over the screen. Slow Down the Music When you finish Adventure, press Select.
- Ready Player One movie made a mistake on calling out the "first ever video game easter egg" as this game is used to be the OG (depending on what constitutes an easter egg)

Tried the easter eggs, here's the TAStudio frame number and input for it: - Fastest "move on title screen before starting the game": 0003 Reset (and remove Select) 0006 Select 0012 Select (edit: or every 3rd frame after this. 0015, 0018, etc) 0024 you can go left, right, down etc. Syncs up to the end == Doesn't changes syncability - Slow down the music: This TAS goes for shortest input and the ShesChardcore's friendly bat finishes it later. The "trick" is simply pressing Select, which returns you back to the select screen while the "victory fanfare" plays slower. edit: therefore this easter egg is not applicable to the TAS.

Thanks for pointing those out. I knew about them and I opted not to go for the select screen movement because I thought it might be confusing for people who aren't experienced with the game, like a "if she's moving why isn't she just leaving the castle?" type situation and I didn't think the 90 or so frames of being on screen like that would add any entertainment value to the run. If folks think it is worth adding I can certainly add it in, however. Thanks MESHUGGAH!

It's up to you (the author) to include it but yeah, its good idea to let's see what others think about it. Personally I love it when I watch a TAS which is both short and confusing (you manipulated a bat to bring the key to finish the game), increasing the WTF factor of viewer experience. If you want to include it AND make sure it is understandable, you can mention it in the submission notes and when the movie published, the movie description can be expanded to give this information to the viewer, which will be also visible on the YouTube encode under the video details.

Great little run, yes vote! I must have only ever played this on difficulty 1 as I had no idea there was a bat. Very cool to not only use the bat to your advantage but have it complete the game after input has ended. I'd be in favor of putting in the start screen movement with a bit of explanation - perhaps move in a little repetitive pattern (which you can call using the player for a loading animation) or off toward the far corner or otherwise do something that looks useless (and therefore provoke interest in what, exactly you are doing). I think with short runs like this, the more density of antics/unexplained behavior generally the better, especially if they're visually apparent. The WTF factor makes me want to watch multiple times/more closely and read to understand what's going on. As the run is, I watched the video 3 times and read the submission text twice before having any clue - pretty good!

Requesting a judge to replace the submitted file with this one which saves over 4s - https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/637879738359828927 Hopefully this is my last replacement haha

Great use of the bat! This must have taken significant work to map out all the stuff happening off screen, and make it work out properly. I especially like the part where the player wins the game while "dead" (inside the dragon's belly).

Why. Was the Chalice. In the White Castle. Instead of the Black Castle. Why?

Game 3 "randomizes" spawn locations (technically it's just seeded based on hitting select to move to game 3 on whatever frame) and if you wait long enough there is a chain of seeds that moves the chalice into the white castle. It's faster to access than the black castle so I went one by one through the seeds to find a favorable location for everything so we burn nearly 2s to get the seed from this run and go from there.
