DecapAttack is a Genesis platformer. it features Chuck D. Head as the main protagonist and his mission is to stop Max D. Cap from concurring the world. What's interesting about this game is it's localization in the west. the original japanese game was based off of an anime known as "magical hat" or somthing like that, they didnt think american audiences would find a game based on anime to be appealing so they reskinned the game to make it more Halloween themed, as that was hip in the days.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.3.1

Comments

Don't let the submission time fool you, this run is a 54 frame improvement to the currently published tas, the reason the time looks slower is because gens (the emulator the previous tas was made on) runs at a flat 60 fps, where bizhawk runs at 59.922 fps, more accurate to the refresh rate on a real genesis. If this run was played back at 60 fps, the time would actually be 19:34.59, which would be a 0.94 second time save.
There isnt much major changes to the run, all I really did was optimized movements more in many stages. the run itself is exactly the same.
The only things you really need to know about this run is the power ups and the skips.
The first powerup you see is a skull that sits on top of Chuck, when you use your main attack (your face) you can Chuck De Head (this game is full of puns if you havent noticed). even if the head is on the ground, it can still do damage to enemies, this can be useful in many boss fights.
the other powerups that are used in this run are 2 potions, one that makes you move faster (only really useful for certain skips) and one that extends Chuck's attack face, mostly used for some boss fights, especially the final boss.
There are 3 levels to each world, in all of the x-3 stages, you are required to collect an item hidden in the stage, if you try to leave without collecting it, the scientist and his monster tell you to go back and get it.
there are a few skips in this game, in some stages you can get on top of a wall near the end of the stage to get to the exit quickly, as in most of the horizontal stages, the game only needs you to reach the end of the screen to leave the level. other skips include some boss fight skips, these skips appear in world 2, 3, and 5.

Other comments

Shoutout to Sonikkustar for making some awesome tases.
When I convereted the old tas to bizhawk, it almost synced perfectly, the only real difference was having to add one frame at the beginning to 1-1, so TECHNICALLY this run is a 55 frame improvement of that counts as an emulation difference. because of this, I actually believe that this run could be console verified. so if anyone wants to take a shot at it, let me know and I'll see if I can get it working on gens again (since gens is easier to console verify with)
What else do I have to say? uhhh........the music is kickass. Probably my favorite music in any genesis game. It's so damn good.

ThunderAxe31: Movie replaced for a corrected sync settings file; header and input data are unchanged.
slamo: Since this is a submission attempting to obsolete a run on a different emulator, we have to confirm that the improvement is from non-trivial gameplay and is not due to less loading time or less lag. I timed each level (from the first non-black frame at the start to the first black frame at the end) in each run to see where the improvements were. Here is the table:
You can see that all 54 frames of improvement were within levels and both runs had very similar lag. Upon closer inspection in the improved levels, there is a noticeable improvement in the movement in a few spots, so the time save is valid. No time was lost in other levels either. I also can't find any evidence of new skips or tech since the old publication, so the run is up to date.
The actual timing difference is trivial; Bizhawk uses a more accurate framerate for Genesis than Gens does. The frame count is lower in this movie, and that's what matters.
Feedback was pretty good, and the movie is mostly the same, so I don't see any reason that the tier should change. Accepting to Moons as an improvement to the previous run.

Just a curiosity: If BizHawk is more accurate, why is it easier to console verify with Gens?

it has to do with converting the movie into a readable file that TASBot uses, it's apparently extremely tedious with Bizhawk and it's alot easier to do on other emulators. It's why you dont see many NES console verifications that use Bizhawk, it's almost entirely through FCEUX. If someone wants to explain it better than I did feel free too.

I made a direct converter from Bizhawk to GENS - nothing difficult, it just transforms one pattern (regular characters) to another (byte-code). The problem is different, I expect.
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

Yeah, I’ll be using that if someone does want to attempt this on a real console. Thanks for making it.

Nice Psycho Fox Decap Attack TAS! I'd be really keen to see this and other genesis stuff console verified. Nice work saving those frames.

Thank you for the table, Slamo! It actually makes me relieved that this is how you judge obsoletions of Gens movies, as I have another game that is much more laggier on bizhawk then Gens, so I wont have to worry about the amount it causes too much.
