Movie goals

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.2.1
  • Uses the character Tyris Flare
  • Beat "The Duel" mode as fast as possible

About the run

Long story short, I proposed to garland to help with improving the previous submission. Major improvements are in stages 2 and 4 by ThunderAxe31, and stage 7 by garland. The rest is all minor optimization in most stages, done by both of us.

About the strategy

I didn't struggled much for understanding the game mechanics. All I did was trying to manipulate the enemy behaviour better. I tried to hit both enemies with the first attack, as it's the most obvious time save, but I couldn't do in all stages, due to the different enemy behaviour.
I had to wait some frames before enterting stage 4 in order to manipulate RNG.

Damage of Tyris Flare's moves

  • 16 huge dropping stab
  • 12 reverse swing
  • 6 jump swing
  • 4 flying kick
  • 4 frontal stab (only against beasts)
  • 4 standing kick (only against beasts or during combos)
  • 4 throw
  • 2 most combo attacks

Useful RAM addresses (BizHawk .wch format)

SystemID GEN
00D164	b	s	1	68K RAM	enemy 1 health
00D1E4	b	s	1	68K RAM	enemy 2 health
00D264	b	s	1	68K RAM	enemy 3 health

Memory: Judging
Memory: Optimization seems good.
Now while the poll results were fairly positive, it seemed fairly repetitive to me, especially compared to the published movie. I asked for an explanation as to why people felt the way they did but did not receive anything. Given that this is a unique mode unlocked from the start with a clear ending however, it is still Vault eligible so that is where it is going.
Accepting to Vault.

I was curious about the first submission too: What exactly makes Tyris the best choice here? I thought her gimmick was that she had the weakest physical attacks but the best magic potential, and since you don't get magic in The Duel...

It is certainly true that Tyris' main benefit in arcade is her stronger magic. However, there are also differences in special attacks/hitboxes. Tyris has a spinning backwards attack for her special. This lends itself better to combos than Gilius' rolling backwards attack. Her hitbox also feels smaller (although I cannot prove it). Ax has the same spinning backwards attack as Tyris. His running attack (shoulder barge) has a hitbox that makes it less useful, although is has the unique ability of being able to hit enemies attacking from behind (if you charge away from an enemy that is about to run+charge you, the enemy will be hit and fall in the direction of your charge). Ax's hitbox feels like it's the biggest (again I cannot confirm). Gilius has a rolling backwards attack. It has different benefits to the spinning backwards attack. It cannot be used as easily in combos due to it's range, but this means it can be used to hit enemies who are off screen at a greater range than any other character. Overall the easier combos with Tyris' spinning attack make her the best choice for me. Most of the time it's possible to keep the enemies on screen which makes Gilius' rolling attack less useful, whereas the frames saved not having to re-position to chain a spinning attack saves more time.

Okeydokey, thanks for taking the time to explain that. As for the movie, loved the three revamped fights, and the original movie was also just fine. Vote: Yes.

Can people explain what they found entertaining about this TAS? To me the TAS appears to be fairly repetitive.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

To me, it doesn't last long enough to feel repetitive. Seeing the way the enemies are set up to be taken down with maximum efficiency is fun for me.
