Cliffhanger is based off the 1993 film of the same name.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.2.1
  • takes damage to save time

Comments

the game is fairly straight forward. you simply reach the end of each stage while avoiding enemies, jumping over gaps, the usual stuff.

Controls

  • A: Jumping. every time you land, you freeze for about 2 frames, so it's best to jump the lease amount as you need.
  • B: attack, you can either punch, kick, or use a weapon.
  • Directional pad: used to move back and forth.

items

  • gun: used to shoot projectiles at enemies and is needed to defeat the helicopter
  • knife: a projectile like the gun but can only be used once.
  • fists: simple punch
  • spiked shoes: once picked up, pressing a direction and up makes the char run.
  • dynamite: seems to work just like the knife, it's also out of the way so it's not worth getting.

Stage by stage comments

first screen

walking past enemies sometimes gives you knockback, but I only ever encountered such a thing once, so to avoid it I jump before getting near a wolf so I can walk past it. even though I lose a few frames from jumping, it's still faster than taking the knockback.
This stage is where we go and grab shoes to make us run faster.

second screen

simply falling down from a cliff rather than jumping removes the running speed, so I avoid walking off any sort of cliff. at the end of this screen I jump past the stairs as I dont want to have to keep jumping so much there.

third screen

first of 3 vertical stages. to climb ladders you have to get them from the bottom, you cant jump to them then climb them. as soon as I'm high enough I can jump off the ladders and reach the ledge faster. some places you may see me walking before I jump, that's so I can get to running speed and make some larger jumps. the rocks falling are RNG.

forth screen

we now encounter bosses. you cant continue past them without defeating them.

fifth screen

I'm able to despawn the first boss on this screen by jumping twoards the wolf. I'm not sure why this is, but I assume the wolf being on the screen somehow despawns the boss. for the boss at the end of this stage, I want to get to the right of him so I can continuously punch him until he's dead

sixth screen

just leave the cabin

seventh screen

just moving forward nothing special

eighth screen

I dont want to use the weapon I just picked up, I want to save it for the end, so I switch items by pressing down and a to fists. I then punch the enemy to the slope where I then snowboard down on him.

ninth screen

just enter the cave

tenth stage

just grab the gun to use in next screen

eleventh stage

another boss where I just keep shooting until I run out of ammo, then just go in and punch to death

twelfth stage

nothing special here, I take as little jumps as I can

thirteenth stage

another vertical stage, I cannot jump off the wall to get to platforms so I just have to keep climbing.

fourteenth stage

I hit the helecopter 2 times normally, then start shooting at the left side of the screen. you have to get the last hit as the helecopter is going right to beat it correctly

last stage

basically want to get to the cliff as soon as possible and wait for the boss to get up there, then I use the sword to hit the boss off the cliff. the sword is used to end inputs earlier than simply punching him.
that's all I have to say, I hope you enjoyed.

Memory: Claiming for judging
EZGames69: after talking to klmz about his run, we determined that his run is indeed faster than mine. So I'll be canceling thi submission.

Looks well optimized. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about the horrible music. I was amazed at how much damage you could take without dying. Is this played on an easy mode, or do they just give you that much life that you can take all those hits and be okay?

there is no difficulty setting. that's just how much life you're given.

Is it slower to jump to try and avoid some of the damage? Not that I think it would make it much more entertaining if you did.

every time you jump you lose about a frame of time, so idealy you want to avoid jumping as much as possible. and since damage doesnt slow you down at all and you're given a pretty large health meter, it wouldnt matter.

Finally someone does a TAS of this game. I did TAS this back then but made a silly mistake that destroyed my movie. Didn't bother redoing it. Will watch it when I can for sure. EDIT: Watched it, was entertained (though I'm biased). Didn't see any major flaws. Only one question: when getting the boots, did you try jumping instead of catching the rope? I know that jump is doable if you pull back then run.

Looked good to me. We did Cliffhanger in a big 20 and the controls are much worse than they look. There is a huge delay when you try to jump and the platform hitboxes kind of suck. Nice to see a run, I'm a bit surprised at how close the RTA record is, but I guess it isn't the most complicated game.

I just find klmz has given me a movie of this game last year, but I never watched before. Movie length: 06:55.52 FrameCount: 24972 Re-record count: 8644 It's near 5 seconds faster, so your tas could be saved a lot of. Good luck. Sorry I can't share him movie before he admit.

It would be preferred that existing improvements be shared. I'm not necessarily asking you to do this mtvf1, but it would probably be best for klmz to do it. I'm not going to base a judgment off of an input file that is not accessible to the public when there are 0 details given as to the actual content of this movie and any improvements therein. It's not fair to any people making submissions if such improvements were hidden.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero
