I haven't found a topic for this game so I'll create one.
Well, several months ago, I started to research this game and I discovered/found several improvements for the published run (this run was published on 2006, but was submitted on 2005! Also, another run of 'The First 500'):
- With the help of memory address, I noted that the mage is actually stronger than fighter, because some of your spells (including the 2nd spell) does 40 damage on enemies/bosses. So, during the first stage, getting to level 3 with mage, you gain the second spell.
- Also, no matter which weapon or spell does damage on the second (actually third) boss (worm), only 10 hits is necessary to defeat him.
- For these reasons above, buying the fire sword on the shop before stage 3 no longer is necessary. So, destroy the enemies with the spell.
- With the help of jump on mid-air glitch, with 2 players and with 2 continues, since you need to scroll up a bit (because otherwise, it fails), finally found a shortcut on this game!:

- With 2 players, when the princess appears after the conversation with the ''fake'' king, you can skip the princess's dialogue by entering the door again, saving some seconds.

2 players, speed differences and extra lags (with 2 players) is difficulty to optimize. So, I'm posting this WIP for just showing progress.

- Compared the previous WIP, I changed a bit of EXP route.
- Saved more frames during the way in the cave, although reducing lag with 2 players isn't easy. I'll check this cave again once I finish this run.
- Well, since the mage is slower than fighter, I lost roughly 210 frames. But during the boss, with the flying daggers spell of mage, I saved a lot of time on the boss path.
579 frames faster.

While I was researching more of this game, I discovered another glitch (abused of kiliing a player at same time as reviving another player - requires perfect time to do this), leading me to discover 2 skips:

- redo stage 1 to save 2 MP of mage, as well as extra damage boost.
- new trick to rope climbings (down+b "hitbox" while on air).
- skipped fire sword;
- for some reason, I defeated the worm boss with ONLY 2 sword attacks (7 hits were counted on the first attack, and 3 hits were counted on the second attack). Have no idea why this glitch has occurred, but I haven't tested so much.
- worm boss room is laggy with 2 players, so I jumped at the start.
- death abuse (twice) to gain "superspeed" on a very few seconds.
Stage 2 (actually stage 3) finished! 3078 frames ahead.
Due of new skip discoveries, the WIP route is improvable, but not enough to restart this project until I finish this run, mainly because of exp route and leveling up also increases speed.
EDIT 2: That new glitch used on the improved stage 4 shortcut is much more useful than I expected! Also it's possible to do this glitch to skip most of last room of stage 3 before that village, as well as skipping even more of balrog's castle (stage 5), abusing twice.
Since this game has a limited amount of continues, sadly I only can perform 2 of 3 skips that I mentioned. :(
Balrog's castle is the obvious choice, not only avoids backtracking as well as skipping a boss, and the golden key.
I decided to post now because the published run of this game has completed 12 years.

Due of my recent glitch discovery, I changed some paths of this run in order to keep these continues, necessary to do 2 skips in Balrog's Castle:
1 - Picked 2 medicinal herbs on beginning of this game.
2 - I bought an extra continue (although I lost a lot of time).
In order to do these skips, I need 5 continues - 2 for a skip on stage 4 - 2 and 1 for two skips on Balrog's Castle, respectively.
I'm over 5 minutes ahead.
That first phase is still improvable - just showing a bit of progress.

Well, that last boss (on "3 phases") is difficult and much annoying to optimize, but despite this, I'm still trying to optimize even more that battle.

Well, the last boss is a hell to optimize (weeks TASing this than the entire run)!
After lots lots lots of tries, I managed to improve balrog battle a lot than the previous full run (aka = "WIP 5").

1014 frames saved than the last WIP, 22621 frames ahead of published run (ignoring emulation differences) 139899 rerecords, and more optimizations on stage 1 (some different damage route), stage 4 (much lag reduction during the way to pick "Abel's Charm", and return), and stage 5 (character route change).
Also I discovered that the "multi-hit glitch" (used on both worms) also works hitting dragon balrog's head! Have no idea why it works by only using a second player.

146 frames faster for much brute force optimization. Now much more solid than before!
But...Balrog boss (phase 2) probably can be still improvable a bit with an extra magic hit during the first cycle of flying daggers' spell (normally you can hit 5 times for each cycle, but it's possible to do an extra hit - which is extremely harder to get - because requires very precise timing, and brute manipulation movement of that spell). Probably I'll not touch that battle again (depending of my motivation).EDIT: Improved with better timing for each cycle (but cycle 1 is still 5 hits) - so, different strategy. This game sucks when TASing Balrog (a.k.a the antagonist of this game)

Now, after 4 months of work, I finally finished these improvements for this game. So, work done!
EDIT: I forgot to test a few things - so I put this game on my signature again (until ever finishes this project).

Since this run has some unusual things (such how I defeated worm boss with only 2 hits for the second player) I'll also intend to make subtitles (for bk2 movie file) to explain, as well as documenting my knownledge about this game and some unused finds (due of a limited amount of continues).
