Introduction

This is Maxim all bosses run of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance. I performed a drastic reconstruction of the route and saved McBobX's current run by a lot of frames with that (due to the difference of emulators, we can't compare their movie lengths exactly though).

Objective

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.6.
  • Starts from SRAM.
  • Uses warps.
  • Aims for fastest time.
  • Aims to defeat all bosses.
  • Abuses glitches.

About the run

Definition of the goal

To set flags of destruction of all bosses ($000358, EWRAM domain). We can make a judgement of it with the hatchway to Dracula Wraith's room.

Emulator and core selection

I used BizHawk with mGBA core instead of common VBA to make this run. I think VBA is also okay for now, but BizHawk is seems to be better than VBA in terms of future TASing. That's why I chose BizHawk. As you know, BizHawk supports two cores for GBA emulation: VBA-next and mGBA. It's embarrassing, but I really don't know which core is suitable for CVHoD, so I selected the new one (mGBA) for the present.

Making the SRAM

Due to the change of emulator, there's need to make a SRAM to start this run. I made a semi-TAS movie at first.

Lua scripts used

I edited Robert_Ordis's lua scripts so as to be available on BizHawk environment and integrated some further functions. It can be downloaded here. The original scripts can be found in his submission.

History of the branch

After the publication of current run, several works have been done in Japanese community (nicovideo). However, most works have not been reported to oversea communities, including TASVideos, I guess. So I'll show history about this "Maxim, all bosses" branch including in-bounds run as reference.

Yuzuhara_3's "Maxim, in-bounds" in 11:39.95 (released on 2011/08/11)

It improves Comicalflop & zggzdydp's initial in-bounds run by 2037 frames. He succeeded to construct the new route which doesn't require door-warp glitch.

Yuzuhara_3's "Maxim, in-bounds" in 11:12.02 (released on 2012/12/25)

Sadly, he deleted the two videos, but they are still available as a comparison video encoded by ISMin.

Tarion's "Maxim, all bosses" in 07:09.08 (released on 2014/03/14)

It improves McBobX's current run by 1175 frames.

Tarion's "Maxim, all bosses" in 07:02.70 (released on 2014/04/04)

This run had been a substantial record of the branch in nicovideo for two years.

My suggestion of new route for "Maxim, all bosses" (released on 2016/01/23)

I had assumed a new route since the end of 2015. Although there are several differences between this submission and the suggestion. This saves Tarion's run by 1 minute.

Tarion's incompleted WIP for "Maxim, all bosses" in 06:37.33? (released on 2016/01/26)

Then he released this video 3 days later. It seems that his run had been stagnant for a year. His strategies helped the run a lot.

Appendix

in-game maps (using cheat to obtain the images)

Thanks to

Robert_Ordis and gocha

They made useful Lua scripts for CVHoD TASing.

Tarion and Yuzuhara_3

They showed very optimized strategies on every boss battle.

All CVHoD TASers

Samsara: Yessssssss. Judging!
Samsara: Accepting as an improvement to the published run.

Instant yes vote since I already saw this on nicovideo. Also requesting this for Stars.

First post and vote as a registered tasvideos user! Woohoo! This is a superb TAS, paired with a notable improvement ! Yes for me, and without hesitation. As for the Star tier suggested by mtvf1 and arandomgameTASer, I need to point out that there is already four Castlevania TASes in the Star tier, including one on the GBA, which is a 'all souls' branch furthermore. Even if this run is very entertaining and may have gotten a Star three or four years ago, I cannot say it is exceptional enough to be with the Stars, unless we destitute another Castlevania movie.

Now Maxim pretty much goes to one boss fight right after another. Excellent improvement. Could you please post the lua for Bizhawk you used to make the run?

This TAS was certainly fun to watch.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

Amazing TAS. Easy yes vote I'm surprised because I didn't think that there are much improvements. I like that

I want to vote yes, but first I want to know why there's such a delay in the Giant Bat boss fight. It seems like the slowest point in the run, and I would love to know why, if the Bat is vulnerable earlier, there's such a long wait to kill him when he's drilling.
I am still the wizard that did it. "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." -- Satoru Iwata <scrimpy> at least I now know where every map, energy and save room in this game is

If he gets hit more then two times when not in its 'drill', it'll split into smaller bats and relocate around the room. It's faster to get in 2 critical attacks, and then wait for it to be open so he can be damage glitched.
