Tricks:

Cornerboosting:

If you hit corner of block, Mario will go bit inside the block and get ejected. This will gain 2 frames per pop if done correctly.

Left+Right:

Pressing left+right simultaneously causes Mario to turn instantly.

Per level comments

Level 1

Entering the pipe is faster than doing the straight route (additionally the straight route has nasty piranha plant).

Level 2

One can do the beginning section faster but then wrongly timed piranha plant will ruin everything. Now I can just barely enter the pipe without dying.

Level 3

Only two corner boosts are possible. Rest send mario to pit or to some other very undesirable place...

Level 4

That piranha plant prevents entering pipe. Otherwise some close calls but otherwise nothing special. 3 corner boosts (one can't get three boosts in row from that three block sequence due to insufficient spacing).

Level 5

Nothing special...

Level 6

The first section gets 4 corner boosts (the section does continue, but continuing would be time loss). Cornerboosting before the 6 tall cliff really loses 6 frames. There's forward pipe, but it will lose time (even without the piranha plant messing things up). Oh, and in the end, one can pull off left+right to save about 3 frames.

Nach: This run provides only a miniscule amount of entertainment. The game while technically impressive for what it does with few resource requirements, feels very much like an incomplete demo. Runs need to impress, and this game doesn't seem to provide much of an opportunity to do so. Rejecting.

This movie gave me the same feeling as the Skyroads TAS. It felt like remembering my childhood. I've been wanting to see a run of this game ever since DOS TASing became possible. Corner boosting was very nice. Really cool to see that even in simple games, there are interesting tricks to be abused. Nice work Ilari, nostalgia Yes vote. The game in itself is pretty interesting to me. Graphically it's well on par with Super Mario World though in terms of sound... well. That being said, I don't see why the run shouldn't be published.

I'm sorry, but I honestly can't vote yes for such an incredibly easy and boring game. Nostalgia or no nostalgia (I too remember it). Since the run itself is technically good, I'm voting meh.

Sorry, this run seems like the run of some guy's senior programing project. No music, crappy sound.... and an unlicensed use of characters... just bad.

I saw nothing that made this game interesting for TASing. No music also didn't really help. Voting no.

There was really nothing very interesting about this game. Corner boosting was cool, I suppose, but this game is just too dry. You do realize that this wasn't really meant to be a "game?" It was just so the author could practice programming VGA scripts. The lack of music and mediocre sound, ick. It's like TASing these.

Thanks for the encode! The lack of music is very off-putting with this run. I don't know why it bothers me more for this game than it does for Duke Nukem Episode 1 or for Commander Keen, but it does. (Amazing how back then, background music wasn't the default... remember Chip's Challenge?) I can get over the lack of music given how short the run is. The more annoying factor is the lack of running. Most Mario games are more interesting because Mario is hurtling himself at obstacles and making it out without damage or stopping. Here, outside of the piranha pipe in Level 2, that level of danger doesn't look as evident. There was enough variety in this run, though, that I think this deserves a weak Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... Actually, this game does have running (hold right control to run, keycode 157) and I do use it all the time... Walking is even slower. Yeah, the running speed (in the final room, running speed increases by 50%, and that is kept for 2nd quest) is bit slow.

Yeah, everyone needs to get used to musicless computer games if they want to see more DOS classics on this site. Sound cards weren't well-supported for quite a while, and songs made of single wave tones get annoying before long.

This wasn't even a run right for justice movie... it was a run right for no particular reason whatsoever movie. Since there's no nostalgia value in it for me, this is a pretty easy no vote.

At first I was like, wtf? Why does this run exist? Then I read about people's nostalgia, and I was glad it did - I enjoyed seeing what freeware, fanmade PC gaming was like back in the day. I still don't know if this is the direction TASvideos should be heading though. I think it's valuable for this to exist, but maybe the need to go somewhere other than mixed in with everything else? voting meh for now...

I had other DOS games like Jill of the Jungle, so I can understand the nostalgia value. There still didn't seem to be much action available, though. Voting meh.

This is one part Yes for nostalgia, one part No for unfortunately being a very boring game to actually watch - my resulting vote ended up being Meh. There is absolutely a place for this kind of run but this isn't an "entertaining" run and it isn't a playaround run either. This is the kind of run that accurately records the history of the game and while preservation of games isn't a hot topic at the moment it may become as important as preserving paintings and other artwork from eras gone by. As mentioned earlier in this thread and in other submission threads recently, historical preservation is not one of the specific goals of this site and thus publishing this run may be pointing tasvideos.org in the wrong direction. The only conclusion I can come to is we need some other category for runs like this, like a B sides category or something. I have no idea what the name should be and I also don't know how much of a mess it would be to try and maintain so it's entirely possible such an idea is impractical to actually implement. The game is impressive graphically (for DOS), but fails musically. And the sound effects shouldn't make you cringe whenever they play. The run is well played though, so this would make a good run for the Vault.
