As I recall, a Japanese runner properly TASed it. It's just not available here; you'll have to go to Nicovideo. yep... here: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm11834658

Heh... I actually was was on the verge of creating a finished submission, back in the day: http://tasvideos.org/1036S.html All I really had to do was make a few more keypresses so that the credits would be included, but I got sidetracked and ended up just dropping the whole thing. In the long run, the submission probably wasn't optimal enough, especially by the current tas standards. Stillll, I'm kinda interested in seeing my submission again. Would anyone be able to encode it? :x

Yes, no doubts about it. How different would a Super Hard run be to this?
Not terribly different, when compared to the transition from Normal to Hard. The frog switches are moved to the start of the level for the first two stages, but then it never happens again. Aside from that, about 3 or 4 of the Jewel Peices were shifted around, and there's a bit more enemy placement. Super Hard Mode requires a gamesave too, not sure what the rules are on that these days. I made a video of the first two stages a while back. It's using my now terribly-outdated techniques, but it should give you an good idea what it's like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py2gqoXWUtE (sorry the encode's so bad)

"If I had played this in Hard Mode AND beaten Juan's time [of 1:02:21], that would have been really something, but alas, I'm almost completely sure that's not possible." -SuperHappy The only somewhat heartbreaking parts were seeing some of the cooler puzzles in the game (primarily the last few Pachinko segments) completely skipped over. But I got over that pretty quickly. Nice to see my run finally get the thrashing it's needed for years :D

Ggh... that damned caravan. I managed to reach it a few frames before nightfall in my test run and I was so pleased, but of course it meant that any further optimizations would be useless. All I an think of is maybe use different warp squids and death warping. Would it be possible to find a way that takes up more time before the caravan but then saves more time afterward?

For future runs, it should be noted that for some reason, the US version of this game was censored; that's supposed to be blood flying from those soldiers, not puffs of sweat or whatever. I know it's purely a cosmetic thing that doesn't really affect anything, but still. Anyway, nice run!

I've been lurking this thread for years and seeing its title change was quite shocking. This is pretty awesome. =)

My excitement for seeing this game added was quickly tempered by it being yet ANOTHER "glitch that skips over the entire game" run. Am I the only one who thinks this is the worst category of TASes?

Nice! The way I got behind Spoiled was a pretty clunky-looking part of my run. Keep it up

For Pac-Land, there's a level-select code that can start you out immediately in the "Pac-Land Pro" version of the game, normally available after beating it once. It may be worth trying out. The thing is, once you progress far enough in this mode, the ghosts suddenly become so fast that the game is literally impossible without cheating.

Yeah, kinda funny how I discovered the technique late in the video and ran with it. I'm not sure why it's not letting you save. As far as I can tell, FBA has all the recording options other emulators have, aside from switching in and out of read-only mode...

Noooo I just said NOT to let that submission thread deter you! I'd like to see a run of at least one of these games. Getting the game to do what you want it to do 100% of the time is completely impossible when playing normally.

Holy shit, the game had a soft reset all this time? Getting around the cutscenes alone would improve the watchability of the run by 5000%. Looking forward to this!

I always felt Puzzle de Pon was the superior series despite being less known. The thing about my Puzzle Bobble attempt was that it was 100 goddamn levels long. 39 levels is much more manageable, and the zodiac pices add a touch more variety when compared to the simple "clear away the screen" goal.

I went and made a little tool-assisted superplay of Willow, partly for my own enjoyment and also to see if I can get any TASers interested in this game. It's a fun little arcade game using Strider's engine that was lost to the ages due to there being no home ports whatsoever. http://ohnolookoutitsaraygun.com/willow-tasuperplay.fbm Starts out with the intention of getting lotsa kills and gold but gradually gets more and more speedrunny toward the end. My TASing days are long-over though, so this is about as good as it'll get from me. I'm willing to bet that with the right techniques this could easily go below ten minutes.

Like a lot of games full of moon language, there's the problem where the game may be a little too arcane for a TAS to be enjoyed, but this one comes across okay, in my opinion. This is just one of those videos where you kinda watch in bewilderment as stuff is happening. And despite that you can see the work that was put into it. That is why I voted "yes". I'd also like to take this time to say how much I miss the Agent's screenshot system.

That's good to hear since I'll never have the time to return to my run. If you're going to go for it, you should know that Exit Candies could potentially save a lot of time. I didn't buy any in my WIP, and what they do is return you to the beginning of a dungeon. Only problem is they're pretty expensive, so you'll have to do a lot of manipulating to get those large gems during the start of the game. But ultimately it'll be worth it. There are quite a few places in the dungeons where they could have been used, the part where I make a really LOOOONG excruciating elevator ride upward being the most obvious. That whole part could be skipped with a Candy. Along with that, Flash Bolts are extremely useful against minibosses, but not main bosses. They either don't work at all, or they just take off the same amount of damage a regular attack would. Thus they don't save any time against the 4th Dungeon Boss or Risky, and there was no need to buy as many as I did in my run. Also, I just found the final route I wrote down! --- From opening to Water Town, get 85-105 gems from bandits and spiders. Scuttle Town to Water Town, buy Flash Bolts and 3-4 Exit Candies, talk to Bolo Water Town to Labyrinth. Get warp squids in labyrinth. 6 Flash Bolts needed against bosses. Death warp to Scuttle, go to Oasis Town Return Warp squids in Oasis, then talk to Sky Go to the Labyrinth. 3 Flash Bolts needed against bosses. Death Warp to Scuttle, go to Zombie Caravan. Die a few times on the way, leaving only one life left. Race Rottytops then go to the Labyrinth. 1 Flash Bolt needed against bat monster. 1-2 exit candys needed Warp to Oasis, go to Bandit Town Talk to Risky, go to Labyrinth . 2 exit candys needed Death Warp to Scuttle (no need to drain life as there's instant death nearby), talk to Mimic Warp to Oasis, head to Sky Scope --- Looks like the only thing I didn't have down was how many Exit Candies are needed in Labyrinth 3. Feel free to use whatever notes of mine you need; good luck!

All the way past the 3rd Labyrinth now, but this will likely be the end of this version of the run, as I need to go back and correct some things. I may need to reastart as far back as midway through the first dungeon, in which case I'll just restart completely to see if I can't tighten things up.

up to the end of the first labyrinth. This probably can be considered a WIP at this point. I discovered that when Shantae loses all her lives, she's sent back to where the player last saved, but she gets to keep everything. If the player hasn't saved yet, she's sent to Scuttle Town. This opens the door for major death abuse. It also negates the need to get warp squids for Scuttle Town, so I'll only be getting the four for Oasis Town. Finding the right places to take damage is tricky.
