Looks like you're onto a winner although I think some of your jumps could have been calculated better, so that your not forced to radically alter important jumps e.g jumping onto or crossing platforms. Maybe skewing your jumps sligtly might be of benifit if you want to position yourself correctly for the jumps where a lot of re-records need to be appiled to.

Looking back over the jumping is quite badly done in places, although it doesn't make a considerable diference in time (although in the long run it all adds up) it means that the movie lacks the polish that it certainly can have. I smell a redo. I'll do new WIPs in smaller parts and make them available as AVIs so that more people can see them.

It's a game for the NES that i am also working on. Work is slow due to the fact that it is insanely difficult to optimise. If you want to find out more go here but it has nothing to do with my Gex run. As far as the Gex redo is going i redid the first remote and was stunned that i managed to shave 700 frames. It is looking much better now. A new WIP after remote number two.

This is the redone WIP. I tried to make an AVI and since i've never done one before i managed to screw it up somehow and so it won't play on my media player.....anyways here's the new .m64 file. This has the first two remotes from out of toon; my route for the first one is different, and faster, and my route for the second remains the same. It's just more polished.

If anyone can post up here a step-by-step guide to making AVIs with the Mupen 64 it'd be appreciated. Mainly list best settings for the Mupen and the x264 and where to find these settings etc...and please don't just post a link to the FAQ either because that didn't help.

You could always capture it with FRAPS, camstudio or hypercam, although the latter two won't record any sound.

Thanks, that worked nicely. Go to youtube to see the first 3 remotes of the TAS. The picture quality is poor and there is no sound, but everyone will just have to live with that. You can see what is going on at least.

If what you're looking for is the .m64 file it is a few posts back....or perhaps you just have an emulator problem.

The last few days have been quite intense in getting this first chunk of the run out of the way. I'm going to take a week or so to do more testing, there's a thing or two that i want to try out before i start recording the rest of this movie.

Right, after much thorough testing, i've decided to change the route a final time. The final route is looking good; it incorporates speed and shows off every level in the game plus many glitches, tricks and shortcuts. I totalled up all my testing times for the levels, however, i never noted time travelling between levels so i had to make harsh estimates of that. One unfortunate discovery was that there are much less remotes in the game than i thought there were. In short, in the game there are 35 and to reach the final boss you need 33. That means i can skip only two. As far as completion time goes sub 1:15:00 is a definite (however, i still don't know the travel times)...maybe, just maybe i can do it sub 01:00:00. Depending on travel time of course.

I reckon that you're right. That'll add a lot to the run and it shouldn't be extensively longer either. I would just need to do the bonus levels aswell. EDIT -- Wait a minute...what am i thinking...a 100% run would have to include all the silver and gold remotes aswell. That adds about another 28 to the final total, not to mention all the bonus levels. I'll stick to any% for the time being.

Just begun my most final of final run for this. I have redone all from the start; basically just to smoothen out my travelling from the start into the first level and also to tidy up here and there. I have done the first three remotes and have saved around a second or so, i won't post the next WIP for a while though as i'll will be doing most things the same. heh, I don't even remember titanic, so it looks good to me :p maybe a few turns under water that look awkward and such but I dunno ;)

Yeah, titanic was a level specially added for the N64 version (yet at the expense of two levels??). The swimming parts were extremely difficult to optimise. What i tried to do was set Gex in line with the target and roll towards it, however, this was made more difficult by things getting in the way and i found that slight, sharper turns saved more frames than longer ones. Also Gex only goes up and down at 45 degree angles meaning that my route to the iceberg directly above looks quite questionable. I assure however that it is optimal.

If you want to see the .m64 file here it is. I've tried encoding AVIs before yet to no avail. They always turn out with gargantuan file sizes despite my attempts to compress it and even then i can't get them to play. Until i figure out how to do it properly (and apparently it's really difficult) this is the best i can do, which is a shame i admit.
