I already checked a couple while i was playing.
> Vine Valley:
> 40% 0:14
This was a 13.
> Chimp Caverns:
> 97% 0:40
This was 39. After platform perils it was 41 (compared to 42).
I've let Daniel V see the run, and he admits that it's slightly better racing quality, and he spotted some of the differences between the two versions (there's at least 4 places where PAL has an advantage.. two are minor, and two are quite largish.. 3-4 seconds at least).
I'd put my money on the timer being different; as I said, this vid has way more frames (admittedly, I _did_ use the start+select in more levels now, but still..).
Yes, I thought about the frame rates after I had posted that, and it makes sense.
However, I now think that there is a bit of a difference between timers in the PAL/NTSC versions.
My first PAL run was 45:30 (using the warping glitch).
The NTSC run, using every trick in the book (but without the warp and added disadvantage of two nasty shortcuts that seemed only possible in PAL), finished a 43:50.
I just completed a second PAL run and it was 44:30 (a whole minute better), using every single timer-saver in the '43, and then some. This run was flawless (for me, and the tricks I know of), and was the most entertaining to watch.
But that's a sizeable difference between the two versions, about 40 seconds! The 44 even uses the warp glitch, which should give it an extra advantage. Unless the warp glitch is intentionally in the game and the programmers decided to slap on a whole minute on the timer if you took it, I reckon the timers are not _quite_ the same.
I have 3 questions:
1. Why didn't you use the warp glitch in the NTSC run?
2. Are you going to do tests to find out if the programmers intentionally added in a penalty for using the warp glitch?
3. You seem to be online now, so can you send me those 2 movies?
save point before orangutan in PAL run: 14:00
warp glitch completion of orangutan in PAL run: 15:00
save point before orangutan in NTSC run: 13:00
warpless completion of orangutan in NTSC run: 14:00
the NTSC warpless run was already faster to begin with. I can't do it right now, but to determine whether there was a penalty or not, you'll have to find out the value in the seconds unit of the above times and compare them.
I just got 3091 in the DKC competition cartridge. It was a pretty good run, but I think I can improve it by a few more hundreds with some more practice. Does anyone want to try to beat me?
Edit: I just tried again and got 3163.
Edit 2: I just got 3215.
Edit 3: I just got 3375.
Edit 4: I got 3481, and then shortly after that I got 3494. Unless I'm not using the best strategy, I think I've just about reached my potential, so I don't think I'll be able to beat 3494. I also recorded it, so if anyone wants to see it let me know and I'll send you the smv. Btw, does anyone think it would be a good idea to submit this movie? Even though it was done at 100% speed with no re-records it's really good.
I'd try as well, but I can't seem to download the rom (from an emulation site you suggested somewhere, which I won't link to). I remember someone claiming a score around 4000.
It was already suggested as a tool-assisted run, but I'm against it. It's far too easy with savestates and would defeat the whole purpose of a cart designed cheifly for skills competition among good DKC players. If it's put in it's own category where savestates aren't allowed then it would make for a good competition among users of this forum; I was actually thinking of running a similar competition on my site. As for my 101% DKC run, I finally managed to pull off a 47:00, but I forgot to do the first bonus room of Elevator Antics so it doesn't count...
I just tried a different strategy and this time I got 3549.
Edit: My last run was a little sloppy so I just did a cleaner run using the same strategy and I got 3625.
Ok, here's my trick: I'm not sure if it's faster than just continuing and trying to beat the level, but once I get to the point where I do the trick it takes absolutely no effort, I don't have to worry about messing up, and I get points pretty quickly. In the level just before Orangutan Gang (I forgot what it's called), there's a bonus room with Winky in it, so just keep going through that bonus room over and over and you'll get 40 points each time. Actually my time isn't really that great because yesterday Penev told me that he got 4008, so I'll need to practice some more.
Edit: I just did another run with a few more tricks added in, and I got 3841. I'm getting closer...
Edit 2: I just did another run with just about the same strategy as last time but it was a little cleaner, but I still messed up a few times so it can still be improved. My score was 3961. Btw, I recorded it so let me know if you want to see it.
Edit 3: I just beat Penev with a score of 4023, and it's recorded.
Edit 4: I just got 4082. Penev got 4200ish, but there was a misunderstanding and he didn't realize that I wasn't using save states, so his scores were with save states, so he's gonna do another run without save states.
Edit 5: I forgot to mention that my 4082 run is also recorded.
Edit 6: I got 4096 and recorded it.
I'm going to stop playing this for a while because it's messing me up a little on my run of the whole game. I did try again once more today though, and I got a score somewhere in the 4000s.
I just got 4143.
Edit: Penev just got 4008 without save states but he got hit twice.
Edit 2: My best score now is 4266 and Penev's best score now is 4247.
We've been discussing strats through AIM. Here are a few strats that might help you: In the fifth level, when you get up to the bonus level with Winky in it just keep going through it over and over. Make sure you get the KONG letters in every level, and also get all the bonus levels. If you're unsure whether to waste time getting more points somewhere, only get them if you can get about 12 points or more per second.
while I was playing around, I discovered a way to get 100 lives in Jungle Hijinx in a matter of seconds! Doesn't help with the score though. If you only stay in Jungle Hijinx the whole time, you can gather around 3400 points at most.
How do you get 100 lives in a matter of seconds? I knew about the balloons up in the trees, but that's nowhere near 100 and it would take awhile to gather so many lives by reentering the level so many times.
Btw, I just got 4275.
Forget what I said about getting every bonus level, Penev discovered that it's better to skip the first bonus level in level 2. Btw, my best score now is 4318 and Penev's best score now is 4336.
Edit: I just beat Penev with a score of 4353 :)
I've seen a video of lives glitch performed in one of the cave levels. You roll with diddy into a klump, and suddenly you get an insane amount of hits (the red sparks when you hit an enemy) in the blink of an eye, and your life counter increases by some random amount.
Is it like that?
With the current strategy I'm using, I think the max would be 4500. I've got a 4480 with save states, and that didn't take advantage of every trick in the book (some of which obviously won't be done on a 0-states run).
