I've been wanting to do a pure speedrun without savestates/slowdowns of this game for a long time, so this morning I popped in my Donkey Kong Country cart into the SNES and started practising. After a couple hours, I checked on the Twin Galaxies scoreboard for the fastest completion and to my surprise I noticed a time of 101% in 28:00!? I don't mean to sound like a major skeptic but I have a hard time seeing how that's possible. If you've seen SnapDragon's speedrun of this game, he plays almost flawlessly and manages a time of 50:00. Even with savestates, I don't know how you could shave off 22 minutes off his run. It could be a result of a glitch, but even so, TG denounces the use of glitches in speedruns (take Metroid for example). Maybe someone has an idea of how he managed it? Anyway, I'll be attempting this game and I'll post my times on here, and I'm hoping that there will be interest in doing a "Speedrun Competition" for DKC like there has been for SMB3, LoZ, and Yoshi's Island. (and no, I have not abandoned ALttP, I'm currently halfway through optimizing the Dark World) Edit: Bisqwit, would you consider making a section on the forum for these speedrun competitions? There are about 3 or 4 games with competitions going on so far and I think that it would be good to separate them from the more general or time attack discussions of the games. Also, they'll be easier to notice and will encourage more participation. :)

Maybe... Hmm. I would like to have the name of the console in the title of each of those topics then.

I'm a friend of SnapDragon, 28 minutes sounds incredibly impossible. I'd really want to know how that was done.

Maybe it was a typo.

I sure hope so; it has been up there for quite some time now, which is discouraging. Well, I came across Iron Knuckle's completion times for each of the levels: Level Time ------------------------ ------- Jungle Hijinxs 00:47 Ropey Rampage 00:54 Reptile Rumble 00:54 Coral Capers 00:52 Barrel Cannon Canyon 00:57 Candy's Save Game (00:04:24) Very Gnawty Lair 00:18 Winky's Walkway 00:30 Mine Cart Carnage 00:12 Bouncy Bonanza 01:12 Stop 'n Go station 01:09 Candy's Save Game (00:07:45) Millstone Mayhem 01:34 Necky's Nuts 00:26 Vulture Culture 01:19 Tree Top Town 01:21 Forest Frenzy 01:54 Temple Tempest 01:05 Candy's Save Game (00:15:24) Orang-utan Gang 01:50 Clam City 00:58 Bumble B Rumble 00:47 Snow Barrel Blast 01:48 Slipslide Ride 01:21 Ice Age Alley 01:10 Croctopus Chase 02:27 Torchlight Trouble 00:55 Candy's Save Game (00:26:40) Rope Bridge Rumble 01:09 Really Gnawty Rampage 00:27 Oil Drum Alley 01:50 Trick Track Trek 03:10 Elevator Antics 01:43 Candy's Save Game (00:34:19) Poison Pond 01:15 Mine Cart Madness 01:42 Blackout Basement 01:22 Boss Dumb Drum 00:55 Tanked Up Trouble 02:37 Manic Mincers 01:30 Misty Mine 01:32 Loopy Lights 01:30 Candy's Save Game (00:46:42) Platform Perils 02:25 Necky's Revenge 00:35 Gang-plank Galleon 02:25 + ------------------------------- Grand Total 00:52:07 not the fastest, but it gives a general idea of how it should be done (I have to download SnapDragon's run again; I don't have it on this machine). I am going to record myself doing the entire Kongo Jungle and Monkey Mines levels tomorrow; I'm quite sure I can reach those times.

Grand Total 00:52:07 Is that game time or actual time, and are the level times game time or actual time?

the Candy's save point times are from the game's own timer, but the game doesn't add the time you spend moving on the map in the final total. So the final total is probably game time; I'm not sure how the individual levels were timed, be it by stopwatch or using the savepoint. There's probably plus or minus a couple of seconds of error.

hmmmm cant remember either i finished this game eventually, have to check my cardridge, but its at a friend i think half n hour sounds incredible for 101% (even for not), then again 50min sounds fast as well :p ** i did finish the game. i just finished watching the vid and i remembered the boss and how i almost always got hit by those cannonballs at least once. and how surprised i was at the almost-ending :p anyways the run seems almost perfect. some minor errors (and one time he does a level twice to get a secret, did he forget? or was this route simply faster?). minor details anyhow, i dont see how this run could be optimized by more then a minute, let alone 20... its good to see all those secrets though, some i would've never figured out, some i tried to figure out but never did (like obvious barrels with no way to get to them :) so it was nice to watch.

I think the fastest time anyone has gotten with saving is 47 minutes, and if I remember correctly I think I remember someone saying they got 46 minutes with save states.

I don't understand why TG allows saving, I think a no-save run would be far more impressive. DKC isn't that long of a game, and I think I good player would manage without them. I didn't have time to record myself today, but I did the Kong Jungle levels and already I am faster than the times I posted.

Isn't that the goal of a speedrun? From what I vaguely remember, SnapDragon only got hit once during his run and didn't die. I'm sure in time I can do as well.

the run i saw, i think the player got hit about 5 times, once probably on purpose (in a water level). remember that getting hit takes a bit more time as well, since the "cutscene" for a kong to go away, and to get back, delays you, ok ok even minor, but still.

hmm, I saw nine...anyway, I'm back to playing this game now, and I have pretty much the first quarter of this game mastered. I've not only found ways to make it faster, but I'm doing as many cool things on the way to make it even more entertaining, which is why it takes a little longer to perfect. I tried recording on ZSNES last night, but Camtasia made it lag considerably. I still have the ZSNES movie file of the Kongo Jungle levels though, I could post that up if anyone is interested. So far, the run is going really well.

What??? You mean you're taking a break from ALttP? I was looking forward to seeing that. Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing what you did so far in DKC, so you should post that up.

until now, I've been working both ALttP and DKC at the same time, with LoZ still on qeue; maybe I should have a poll on which one I people would like me to do first? I have another three months until school starts so I have plenty of time. My Light World video of ALttP gives an idea of what I'm capable of doing in that game. (and I'm recording the Monkey Mines levels tonight so I'll post it along with Kongo Jungle tomorrow so you can see how I'm doing at DKC.)

Of the two games, which would take less time for you to practice enough to do a good speed run?

Route planning for ALttP stopped all of a sudden, which made me think that there wasn't as much interest in it anymore especially since there's also a little planning within the dungeons that can be done (TSA's video wasn't perfect in that). I have a general idea of how I'm going to go about doing DKC, and since I've played it a lot recently, I estimate it'll take me less time to complete a decent run for it. Edit: why am I no longer an active player? Does this apply only to time attacks or is it the rate at which you publish runs? I've stopped making time attacks because I need time to focus on my speedruns.

At least some time ago the title "Active player" was granted when you had created at least one published timeattack and had a certain amount of posts. It might be that this has been changed so that you must now have a certain amount of published timettacks. It might also be that the post limit has been changed.

I finished my run of the first two worlds, but when I played it back, it went completely dysync in the first few seconds. I'll have to find some other way of recording this.

Amazing news, while playing the game with my brother, I've discovered how to beat DKC in under 30 minutes!!! It'll all be revealed once I've completed the video of the run. :)

I've discovered how to beat DKC in under 30 minutes If that's with 100% completion, that's pretty cool and I can't wait to see it. If not, it's no surprise, just take the warp to the third world and I assume it shouldn't be too hard. In case anyone doesn't know about this glitch, here's the paragraph about it at David Wonn's website: Warp glitch sent in by Ryan Murray I believe this was actually featured in a Nintendo Power article, but we were playing with it long before that issue even appeared. In the very first world, when Donkey and Diddy are wandering around the map, there is a section right before you enter the right half of the world where the path they walk on (the dotted lines) has several corners...I actually believe it is right after Cranky's house. Well, as your character passes over these corners, you need to pretty much mash the A, B, and Y buttons, as well as the L and R buttons....heck, just hit EVERY button, and, if timed right, the screen will fade out. When it comes back in, you'll come out of a barrel in the middle of a stage in the middle of the third world! This trick always seemed to work best when I only had one character (I.E. Diddy, no Donkey; Donkey, no Diddy), and it can also be performed (with different results) wherever there is a corner on the map screen. [Ed. note: To do this easily with two characters, go to Funky's Flights so that you appear as one plane.]

well yes, that's pretty much it. To my great disappointment, I found the same glitch online an hour later after having found it on my own. I was hoping to add it at the end of the video for aesthetic purposes after having beaten the game legitamately, but it is already discovered. But even worse, I could have never used it in a full run since nobody, including SDA would ever take it since it is a teleport glitch. It would also skip a lot of the cool things I do in the earlier levels so it wouldn't be as impressive to watch. Never tested to see if you still get a glitched 101% through it, but according to that paragraph it doesn't seem to be the case. Regardless, I only have 15 more levels to optimize, so expect my run to show up sometime soon. :)
