And a warpless run is not using warps. Abusing errors in the game to where it helps you advance is not warping.
Then I guess you would classify the Zelda 2 run as Warpless?

I don't think that run can be classified as anything except [scooby doo confused noise].

I don't think using and other exit is considered a warp. If it will skip levels, yes, this is warp but that's not the case here. If it's the case, then the Battletoads warpless run IS NOT a warpless run.

So I finally watched the smb2 warpless run here, and it was pretty sexy. I have two suggestions, for whoever's working on this. In 2-3, the guy who did this run didn't pick up an enemy until he was like halfway across the overworld (after you go up the ladder). The crazy ladder thing that he does might screw this up, but if you move to the right of the ladder before ascending it, that will trigger the beezos to start moving. So when you get to the top, one is waiting for you to pick up. Of course, you might get there too soon since you shoot up the ladder so fast, but I think it could work out. In 4-2, he got the five cherries at the very end of the level, after going up in the rocket. Since the game counts cherries no matter where you get them in the level, just get the very first one you can, which is at the first whale screen. Instead of dropping to the lower level immediately, stay on top and then jump, get the cherry, land on the whale's tail, and you're on your way. You won't have to slow down at all. Then, when you go up the rocket, you only need 4 cherries, and you don't have to drop down to get that first one. That's all that I immediately noticed. Hopefully this made some sense.

tmont, I know exactly what ya mean. I fudged up my first time playing and now Im going back through and correcting most of my problems... So far up to world 2-3 im 7 seconds ahead of my original time. Im starting to think that Luigi is the best character for world 1-3...Im not sure though..Anyways, Im still having trouble with the 3-1 to 3-2 thing.

Well, if you use Toad, you probably save about 2 seconds before going in the door, since Toad has the mysterious ability to run faster while carrying heavy things. Once you get in the door, you have to double jump or power jump up to one of the platforms, so that will be a little longer. After you get the key, you're just falling, so Luigi or Toad will probably be the same at that point. Once you get through the locked door, Toad can pick up an enemy again, so he'll get through that part faster, so mabye another 1-2 seconds. I heard a rumor that you can kill Mouser with a star, so Toad or Luigi should be identical for Mouser. If you use Luigi, the only advantage I can think of is that you'll be able to shoot up the ladders/double jump off the ladders, which will make getting the key go much quicker. So if that saves more time than like 3-4 seconds, Luigi's your man. Otherwise, Toad might be quicker. I'm only going off what I can remember from when I did the real-time console speedrun, so those figures might be inaccurate.

I have never seen this done. The only way it can be done is if you know exactly what frames mouser will throw a bomb perfect enough to land right where you need to pass in the breakable wall. I find it nearly impossible and an "old wives tale" haha.

I use Luigi because I could not figure out how to get the star perfectly to kill Mouser
I kind of figured this implied it was at least possible to kill Mouser with a star (this quote is taken from your comments about the current run, by the way). I guess not, though.

As a result of the retarded discussion going on in the SMB2 thread in the Workbench forum, I thought I'd spread the party this way. Since someone mentioned that they were going to try and improve this, for the love of God, please use this trick, or tell me why it doesn't work:

If that doesn't make sense, watch the speedrun, or read this: Facts -There is a ladder at the beginning of level 2-3 (you're underground). -After you ascend the ladder, there are beezos (flying bugs, or something) flying around in the overworld. -Toad runs faster when he carries an enemy. The Problem -Toad cannot immediately pick up a beezo, in order to run fast, because they are not flying at his level after he ascends the ladder and gets to the overworld. The Resolution -Have Toad move to the right (starboard) of the ladder before he ascends it. -Go up the ladder. -A beezo will swoop down right next to Toad, at ground level. -Pick up the beezo. -Run like hell. It's pissing me off that I'm supposed to be watching a movie that pushes the limits of what is humanly possible, and yet I have played the first five seconds of level 2-3 faster than what is supposed to be perfect hundreds of times on a console in real time. Not that I'm against "surprise" submissions, but when it's already been stated that there are faster way to do things, "surprise" submissions omitting these already known tricks are sometimes a disappointment. To avoid this slight disappointment (don't get me wrong, I like the new movie) in the future, I'm bumping this thread.

"The whole idea of a warpless run is that the viewer can actually see all the levels being played, though, so in my opinion at least, "warpless" means "no use of warping glitches", too." -well, why not have a warpless run that abuses glitches to skip levels, and an all-level run that doesn't skip the stages? Remember that even in the warpless run, huge shortcuts are still being taken, so the whole stage isn't being completed. As for Toad runing faster when he carries something, think of it this way. Locomotives can run fast, but they often have weight intentionally added. This gives better traction, and can get trains moving better/faster. Maybe the weight that Toad carries gives him better traction and allows him to move faster that way. Eh?

Did anyone figure out the glitch where you can warp up 1 level without a load screen or a boss fight? I remember I pulled it off by accident in level 2-2 or 2-3 and warped up a world in the underground of like 3-2. But when I tried to do it again, it put me back to level 1 or so. There is some trigger to make this happen and still have no idea what I did to pull it off

I have been to Davids page many times (Just trying to find out this SMB2 thing) and he has what originally happens when you go to level 1. Mine went up a level into an underground level. I have not yet to pull it off again.

In many of the SMB2 TAS runs, I've seen the char can climb up ladders very quick (as if it's flying up the ladder). I read the SMB2 tricks page and I didn't find any mention of how to climb up the ladder quickly. How do you perform the trick ? Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, this trick is performed by pressing up+down at the same time while climbing the ladder. This trick requires that your emulator supports this buttoninput... The latest FCEU version (0.98.15-nitsuja) does support this.

It's indeed pressing up+down that will make you fly up the ladder so quickly. It's similar to the Legend of Zelda 2 movie. I'll add it to the tricks page.

Today I was playing SMB2 on a console and maybe found a useful glitch. After hitting Wart with the 6th vegetable, I caught a 7th and threw it at his mouth. Instead of flashing longer, Wart made a sound, then immediately flew offscreen w/ his sprites garbled. If this is reproducible (seems likely), it could save about 2-3 seconds.

I think the timer stops at the last hit so that wouldn't save time.
