baby's first TAS it's sloppy, but I'm happy enough to get a run out. it's my first submission after all.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Greetings starleaf. Welcome to our community. You have picked a very good game to TAS, but unfortunately...there are issues with your movie. As Spikestuff has stated, there is already a faster TAS of this goal. That, in itself, directly breaks our our top rule of beating all known times...even if there isn't an existing publication. Throughout your movie, there are places where you slow down and/or even wait for obstacles to clear a way. As you will see, our site has many high quality TASes that make use of "down-time". It may be a hard road to accomplish, but that is exactly what many members of our community have done.
As a new member of this site, please don't feel discouraged...as it takes some time to get used to the rules and how we operate. Normally, you can submit these types of movies in our "WIP / Userfile" section. There, you can get feedback from others on the quality and entertainment of your work. I normally ask some authors to go back to try to clear up some issues, but in this case...Super Mario Bros. has been a heavily sought after game and it is unlikely that you will be able to accomplish that. So, for the time being...please remember to take your time and go for the impossible. It will certainly be rewarding.
Rejecting.

Hello starleaf and welcome to TASVideos. The best place to put your "sloppy" TASes would be in the userfiles area, so you can continue developing your work, and once you're happy with your end results then you can make a final submission. Here's a glitchless TAS that you can compare yourself against: Link to video

Sorry, but there is no point in submitting this. Even for your first TAS, it looks like you barely tried. You slow down tremendously in a couple of places, without going back to redo these parts. It's almost never necessary to slow down in this game. As Spikestuff mentions, watch the other run and study it, and understand where and how it saves time on you. Even if you won't be able to beat the run, you'll be able to understand how to go faster in this game and produce a smoother looking run in the future. Since it's over a minute slower than the other run, I have to vote No.

Welcome to TASVideos starleaf! Submitting a TAS on this site means that you intend for it to be published (if accepted). A publication gets a high quality encode uploaded to the site's youtube account, and a dedicated publication page. As part of the curation process, submissions must follow a set of rules. However, as others have noted, this TAS is rather unoptimized and slower than the current record for this category. If you only wanted feedback instead of publication, then please upload to the site's Userfiles. From there, you can share your userfile and request feedback on either the forums or our Discord server (#tas-feedback). In the future, please also review the submission instructions before submitting a movie. On the "Submit Movie" page, you should have seen a large box at the top that included a link to these instructions.

Hi, On top of what the others have said before me, I would like to add that "glitchless" might not be the best idea for a new branch, mainly because it doesn't offer anything unique to Super Mario Bros. runs. You are now comparing yourself to this 21-year-old run that happens to be almost a minute faster than you; it has since been obsoleted thanks to the newly-found uses (at the time) of the walljump and wrong warp (in 8-4), the wrong warp in 4-2, the wall clip in 1-2, the flagpole glitch, and the full flagpole glitch in 8-2. Then it was simply pure optimization from there. (Sidenote: This is the latest "glitchless" run that I could find published on TASVideos. It still uses Left + Right for the moonwalk in the third room (of 8-4), but that's negligible as Bisqwit was actually waiting for the Piranha Plant in the correct pipe to go down. My point should still stand in that case.) There was a somewhat similar submission six months ago that banned the use of "Left + Right" (also known as "RTA Rules", in that the game is played under normal means; as if a superhuman was behind a normal NES controller).
Here's what I wrote:
"RTA Rules" or "No L + R" doesn't make for an interesting enough goal for a Super Mario Bros. run to be published here; if we had something like that (even if it's greatly optimized), then it'd be largely similar to HappyLee's original run. Worse yet, that's the fastest run of the game thus far, with no further improvements found since.
(...and here's the part where I drone on about optimization at its finest... @~@;)
Not to mention that in the submission, you wrote:

That's what we have the Userfiles for; anything that you feel is sloppy or not worthy of publication goes there. Heck, I still have quite a ways to go for mine. My recommendations:
  • Take some time to get to know your emulator and the tools it possesses, such as savestates, slowdowns, frame advance, TAStudio, etc.
  • Study the game you have in mind for a TAS, and learn about any oddities, secrets, or tricks it may have.
  • As Bigbass said, ask questions, either on the forum or in the Discord server; I can't stress this enough.
  • I don't think there's much else you can do for this game in particular... Maybe try TASing ROM hacks of the game instead? There's loads of them to choose from (not to mention there are other original games to choose from too, not just hacks).
  • If you think a run of yours is sloppy, then don't submit it. Upload it to the Userfiles instead.
  • Most important: All of this is to encourage you, not discourage you! So don't be scared about seeing this post because it feels like a lot. There's probably tens, if not hundreds of people that want to see you improve; I want to see you improve. I know that because I have to deal with handling submissions and runs correctly myself, just to make sure my runs are decent and abide by the rules. Take it slow if you have to; don't rush it. I like to think of it as "quality over quantity", in that better runs are better than more runs.
Hopefully this helps (and that I didn't mess anything up). Not voting unfortunately.
Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :) Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like. In progress: - Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field. - Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube. - Pretty busy at the moment... Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)
