Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is a TAS of FDS Super Mario Bros. 2, specifically of the letter worlds. You can play the secret letter worlds after getting 8 stars on the title screen, and you can access them by pressing A+Start on the controller at the title screen. This TAS uses the warpzones in A-2 and B-4 to reach the end of D-4 as quickly as possible, starting from A-1.
During the creation of this TAS, I investigated the possibility of big Mario being faster than small, as big Mario can perform crouch clips in B-4 and D-4, and bullet bill glitch in D-3 to save a significant amount of time. However, the small Mario TAS ended up being roughly 30 frames faster, so I went with that route instead.
I also investigated timesave in the first room of D-4, and in A-2, which is only 2 frames from the next framerule. Unfortunately, both of those possibilities came up short as well. The TAS also loses a frame on the pipe entry in the first room of D-4, to avoid an impossible Bowser pattern later in the level.
To play the movie, you must first have at least 8 stars on the title screen. You can get that via game genie codes, playing a regular warps TAS 8 times, or any other method you like.

Run Objectives

  • Finishes D-4 from A-1
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuses glitches
  • Uses warpzones

A-1

Here, I lower the platform in front of the flagpole enough to clip into the ground, which allows me to perform a full flagpole glitch, skipping the flag-lowering and walking to the castle cutscenes.

A-2

In A-2, I use a corner clip to enter the warpzone faster than otherwise possible. Unlike 1-2, there are actually three ways of entering the warpzone, you can ride a rising platform, perform a walljump near the beginning to get up top early, and then you can use the corner clip seen in this TAS, which saves 2, almost 3, framerules over the walljump.

B-1

Nothing special really, just a fast acceleration and flagpole glitch, though I tried my best to make it entertaining.

B-2

A water level! I perform an underwater fast acceleration at the start, something that is only possible using L+R, and unlike in SMB1 there are actually sections where you need precise swimming and slowdowns.

B-3

Nothing special either. This level is actually where I performed the mushroom grab in the big Mario TAS, as the first mushroom can be grabbed very quickly.

B-4

The first castle level, though we never get to meet the fake Bowser it contains. I perform a wall clip partway through the level, to skip having to ride the platform below.

D-1

In this level, I abuse wind mechanics to clip into the floor, allowing me to perform the second full flagpole glitch of the run.

D-2

Nothing special, though I do show off a glitch at the end, where if you jump on the last frame Mario is on the spring, he performs a normal jump instead of a spring jump.

D-3

Some cool enemy kills near the end, but other than that, not much of note.

D-4

In the first room, I abuse firebar mechanics to allow Mario to pass through the long firebar in the first room. In the second room, I have to slow down slightly near the end to avoid being killed by the piranha plant. And in the fourth and final room, I have to clip through a wall to skip having to wait for the podoboo near Bowser to fall back down, and I also have to avoid getting a backwards Bowser, which in D-4 is always an impossible pattern without slowing down significantly.

Samsara: Cancelling, as the author has submitted an improvement.

I like the goal, which I've tested myself some years ago. I didn't manage to make this movie mostly because I haven't figured out the best way to solve the "8 stars" requirement. I have trouble playing the movie file on FCEUX. It starts on 1-1 instead of A-1. The author didn't give any instructions in the submission text, so I don't know what to do.
Recent projects: SMB warpless TAS (2018), SMB warpless walkathon (2019), SMB something never done before (2019), Extra Mario Bros. (best ending) (2020).

Play any movie to complete the game 8 times (you still have to wait until you return to the title even if you have reached the ending). That way you need to create a .sav file that has collected 8 stars for your emulator. I don't think you haven't tried this, but I wrote it, just to be sure. It's nice to see the unique full-fpg of FDS version that doesn't feature in the SNES warpless run. I was especially impressed with the careful on-screen X manipulation on A-2. Great work!

Back when romhacks required prior approval, a patch to set 8 completions for FDS SMB2 was approved, for exactly this reason.

Vote yes, very entertaining. I've been looking forward to a TAS of this category, thanks for making it :)

Yes vote, well done. But I would honestly prefer a warpless completion of the A-D levels.

Thanks. It worked. :) Voting yes for the goal choice.

During the 3-day waiting period, I remembered that bruhmoment had helped me with saving the A-2 framerule a while back, and so I have managed to save a framerule over my old TAS there. Additionally, I saved 4 extra frames in D-4, meaning my new TAS is 25 frames faster than the original. If it's possible, could the fm2 of my submission be replaced with the fm2 of my new A-D warps TAS? It should be downloadable from the user file I just uploaded. Thank you.

The main reason why I chose to do a warps run, rather than a warpless run, is because I feel like a warpless A-D TAS would be too similar to the back half of the Lost Levels warpless TASes. Additionally, blazit/nobodycallsmetubby has already made an A-D warpless TAS as part of their FDS All Levels TAS, and I don't feel like I could have done as good as/better than they did. However, I do understand why a warpless TAS could have been more entertaining.

I forgot that I probably should have linked the userfile in question, so I'll do so now: https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/637949574383986691 Hopefully it's more entertaining than the older version of my TAS.

Why are there 2 scrolling black pixels near the status bar? It doesn't show up in the other 2 publications.

Letters in SMB2J are 1 pixel larger than numbers, and this causes their dropshadow to fall below the point where the screen scrolls (if the entire screen scrolled, then the HUD would as well). This causes the very bottom pixels of the dropshadow of the letters in the letter worlds to scroll across the screen. It has no collision or anything, it's simply a visual bug intrinsic to the game. This wouldn't happen in SMB1 though, because in SMB1 none of the text has a dropshadow, which causes the text to effectively be 1 pixel smaller than in SMB2J.
