After Burst is a game where you control a robot to shoot down enemy bases. This run completes the "Normal" mode of the game.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 2.4
  • Fastest time
  • Uses deaths to save time
  • This game is a laggy mess

Comments

I was curious on the main mode of this game after doing the VS mode TAS, and decided to try it. This mode has 30 stages in total, divided into multiple parts.

Stage by stage comments

1

The beginning stage is very straightforward; you aim up and shoot. If you noticed, I die in this, and many other stages; dying at a certain point after destroying the base causes the stage transition to occur faster than waiting for the base to finish blowing up.

2

A tricky upward shot was used to blow up the base without climbing to the top.

3

It's very laggy at the bottom due to lots of enemies. I feel like there's a better method through the tanks, but I wasn't able to find one.

4

The main problem in this stage is the pillar in the middle. If there was a way to clip through and just save 1 shot (or somehow break multiple bricks in 1 shot), it would be a timesaver.

5

I wasn't able to hit the base without jumping on the flying NPC.

6

The angle and position needed to hit the base from below was incredibly precise despite the looks; the bullet almost always hit the left bottom brick instead.

7

I had to go through this stage as intended since I wasn't able to shoot through the tiny hole to the base from the start. If it were possible, this could save time.

8

Another tricky diagonal shot was used to destroy the base from below. Due to the gun cooldown, I wasn't able to die as soon as possible, and thus it barely save any frames dying compare to previous stages.

9

Another stage done as intended. I couldn't jump over the "S", so I had to go through the normal route.

10

A boss stage. This NPC is familar to those who saw the VS mode run. I had to break the bricks to bring the boss down; if there were some way to hit the boss without doing so, maybe it'll save time?

11

This is the start of a new area in game, as indicated by the music change. I had to wait for the tank to move to the right spot at the beginning, so I waited a bit.

12

This part was done mostly blind, so there's probably some further optimizations possible.

13

I wasn't able to kill myself after destroying the base, so you can now see the intended animation played through.

14

I can't seem to destroy the base from the right, so I had to take the intended route.

15

I wasn't able to hit the base diagonally from the beginning. I couldn't shoot the base without dropping down near it. I also wasn't able to die by the end until it was too late.

16

Another stage done as intended, with no way to die at the end. From just looking at the base's location, it looked like it's almost possible to sequence break and destroy it at the beginning, but I wasn't able to. I also couldn't use the platforms to clip out.

17

The exploding platform in the middle seems to be random. I wasn't able to hit the base without standing on it.

18

I wasn't able to hit the base from below. Using the falling block to die is faster than using the mines.

19

Outside the surprise soldier in the beginning, and the fact you're stuck if you don't destroy the blocks at start, this stage was simple.

20

The 2nd boss of the game; the relatively large amount of things in the stage causes lots of lag, so I had to sit near the bottom of the boss the entire time. I wished I could play around more, but this game won't let me without lagging even more.

21

This is the final segment of the game. The shot taken taken at the base was quite precise; normally, the falling block would've blocked the shot like what happened at earlier stages.

22

This stage was done pretty much as intended.

23

I wasn't able to clip through the laser beam npcs, so I had to wait from them to stop.

24

There's probably a better way to hit the base than the method I used.

25

I feel like the end could be improved a bit more.

26

The shot done at the beginning was a lot easier than similar ones done in other stages. I actually lost 8 frames porting this stage from 2.3 to 2.4 BizHawk due to extra lag.

27

This stage was a lot laggier on 2.4 than 2.3 BizHawk for some reason. I lost 28 frames porting the run due to extra lag.

28

16 frames were lost porting this to 2.4 I'm not happy with the route used, but I wasn't able to get a faster one either.

29

Due to how short the stage was, I didn't got any extra lag compared to 2.3

30

The final boss of the game. I'm not very happy with how it turned out, but I tried.

Other comments

If in the future anyone wants to improve the run, please resync it to the latest emulator version first; this game is very laggy, but deterministic, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I added "select" onto frames that accept input to make it easier for anyone wanting to resync the run later, so instead of guess how many frames have no input within stages, just sync up the select presses. I might've missed some due to increased lag at times (or at least, pressing select sometimes did increase lag in 2.3)

Memory: Judging
ThunderAxe31: File replaced with a version that syncs on BizHawk 2.4 and has a correct CycleCount value.
Memory: The optimization appears decent.
The movie is not all that exciting and the lack of any real praise from the audience solidifies it.
Accepting to Vault as a new branch.
Dacicus: Processing...

Can I get some opinions on this submission? I'm the only vote currently. EDIT: A temp encode would probably help.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

I don't find it really entertainning but it seems it is a good TAS anyway, meh vote. Temp Encode : Link to video

small and nice puzzle platformer, stats seems optimal, good for vault for me. also this game has all the lag of the universe and the framerate of a paper book please don't hurt yourself and watch the encode at 2x speed for "normal speed"
