This is a TAS of New Super Mario Land, which is a homebrew of Super Mario Land for the Super Nintendo. Unfortunately, the creator of the game is anonymous. The game had enhanced graphics that looks like New Super Mario Bros DS, and 4P features and the tricks for the said game (except ground pounding) are imported.

Objectives

  • Save Daisy.
  • Get through the game as fast as possible.
  • I used Snes9x v1.60, the latest version I know.
I feel like this TAS is dead!

FAQ

  • Why does my movie desync?
You have the wrong emulator version, or the wrong game version. More info can be found here.
  • Why did you barely kill any enemies on the submarine levels?
Some people may not noticed but I got every single coin on the first submarine level.
  • Is this a ROM hack?
No, but a homebrew exclusive game made by an anonymous user.
Special Thanks to:
  • Pancake002 for trying hard.
Tbh I made this in like 2 hours.

Maru: Judging.
Maru: Okay, so it looks like this homebrew is a decent programming feat, and provided that it meets certain qualifications, it would be eligible for the Vault tier. In terms of notability, this homebrew was only recently released and did receive some praise in gaming news articles. That is not bad by any means, but I think more time may be needed to have a definitive answer to this question. Usually, we give the benefit of the doubt in terms of notability, but this game does not yet compare in notability to some of the unlicensed games featured on TASVideos that have been sold in certain markets in certain countries.
While some people in the thread talked about this being a cosmetic hack, keep in mind that this is technically not a hack, so there are no issues here. Audience feedback was not spectacular for this run though. Entertainment was not solid enough for Moons tier, and the optimization also has room for improvement. On top of the information provided in the thread, keep in mind that this game has powerups to speed up certain areas as well. It is important to have a solid understanding of the game that you are TASing, and it's not ideal to rush to complete a TAS either.
Rejecting due to optimization, but if that is cleaned up, I can see a TAS of this game being accepted in the future.

Did you seriously just replace Maru's judging notes? Also, Pancake's encode is broken. #6470: Chutacoacko_Playz's SNES Kirby Super Star "fastest softlock" in 00:32.28 Note how it says "This is your last warning." (At the bottom of submission description)

First of all, there was no judging note when it was claiming for judging. Second, Pancake001's video is uploading. That's how it's broken. EDIT: There was a judging note, but at the same time, I overwritten it by accident.

This game is one of the most visually impressive ROM hacks for the SNES and should be seen by more people. If you ever wondered what it would be like if Nintendo were still making SNES games in 2006, this game is for you. Submission issues aside, the TAS itself is a fairly straight-forward run through the game and lacks any great entertainment factor besides what the game has to offer visually. Voting yes for a good demonstration of a worthwhile ROM hack.

I'm not sure if this should be published. It was made in a very short amount of time plus it is using a deprecated emulator. Not only that, but the TAS is so dull and boring. I'm ahead by half a second using a different emulator, but most of it is purely loading differences. Link to video This is something I just quickly put up in maybe 2 hours, and I know I took a slow route at some point in the castle level. Just wanting to share that it can be more interesting lol. I'm likely not going to finish my own TAS. Userfile for Bizhawk 2.3.1 BSNES core: User movie #http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/60772515759822157 I voted meh. It could definitely be more entertaining, though.

The art is certainly decent but I wouldn't call it impressive; what I find impressive is that it's not a ROMhack: somebody actually coded this, from scratch, in friggin' assembly. For the encode, please consider this patch to disable Mario's annoying jumping sound,
ROM Patch: If you want to make it a ROM patch, you just open the ROM in a hex editor and go to offset 0x1E75 and replace the 3 bytes 20 CC 1E with EA EA EA (then repair the checksum with a tool if you feel like it).

Voting no on entertainment. This Homebrew also seems either unfinished or doesn’t run well in emulator, judging by the weird stuttering that happens from time to time. If this is still using 1.0 version of the game, then have you tried to see if 1.1 wont have that stutter?

I might be working on "2P Only" for april fools day if there's the way for Luigi to throw Mario to finish goal when it's 3 to 12 blocks near to finish goal to save time.
Cuphead TASes desyncs unfortunately.

Nice run! But please post on this thread than bumping into a submission.

Actually they're completely in their right to post in the submission to call out laziness of an author. This also isn't bumping compared to posts that you do on real dead runs from 5 years ago for no reason.

I'm pretty sure if somebody is going to post a WIP that even if it's planned to obsolete it, it would require posting in the thread for actual announcement in it. I'm not sure if it's appropriate if someone posts a WIP by bumping into this submission.

I'm kinda on the fence about this one. I think it is great that a modernized version of the beloved classic has been made, but it doesn't strike me with awe. The rerecord count is low, which is something that most people on this site know that I go off of (even though I know it can be represented negatively at times). I too confused the stuttering (mentioned by EZ) for optimization issues. I think it is possible, even though I can't prove it, that this could be cleaned up for more frames. Decent effort, I suppose for a first time submission... meh vote.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

No vote, because of the disappointing autoscrollers. Also, there does exist a projectile in this game for mario which should have sped up some parts. I have heard of collision problems with this game, but you don't seem to even try to kill all ememies on the run like in Happylees smb runs. I'm pretty sure this could have been more entertaining if more work was done. You even have missed shots in the autoscroller sections.

No cosmetic hacks We don't allow hacks that only serve to change the looks of the original game. Hacks must provide unique game-play.
This game doesn't just enhance the graphics of New Super Mario Bros DS, it also has 4P features, and physic changes.[/b]

He's a almost serious TASer but a lot of entertainment isn't done. Please read my FAQ on the submission comments for details. he used frame advance

A "serious TASer" doesn't complete a movie in 2 hours with optimisation flaws. Stop making excuses.

Generally speaking, if he's an almost serious TASer, his run is likely to be almost accepted (i.e. it will get rejected). For a first submission, I would recommend picking a short (~5 minutes) uncomplicated game that you are interested in, and then try to make it as entertaining as you can (if you can do so without losing time). That goes for any one of the 3 (2?) people involved in this submission.

Well, frame advance and save states are the absolute bare minimum needed to make a TAS. Without the ability to control the speed of the game and to perform re-records, the run would basically just become identical to an RTA speedrun, and not a TAS. However, using these doesn't make someone a good TASer or a bad TASer. It just makes them a TASer...

I'm not saying he didn't use tools to make this TAS. I'm just saying it's the bare minimum to qualify as a TASer, and it doesn't make his TAS more impressive knowing that he used them. Think about it this way: I can say that I'm a baseball player if I'm capable of hitting a baseball with a bat, but being able to do that in no way guarantees that I'm a good baseball player.
