This one is even more important. Link to video
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

Don't watch Peterson's videos, he's a charlatan. He'll tell you to clean your room, which is a good idea, but then he'll also try to explain how our shared "Judeo-Christian values" are threatened by the "cultural marxists" and how we are all going to end up in some Gulag camp if we don't misgender trans people on purpose. Also, don't watch PragerU, it's nothing but cleverly marketed far-right propaganda.

andypanther, what does your post have to do with dealing with depression?

Both Jordan Peterson and Dennis Prager are political figures, they're not neutral, they have a clear agenda. If anything, their videos don't belong here. I'm just pointing that out.

Any video that can be productively used to fight depression belongs here. Improving yourself has no relation to political agenda. Also by your logic, if a political figure says 2+2=4, it makes it false.

Sure, you could extract the neutral advice from a Peterson speech, there's plenty of uncontroversial statements there to be found. But these aren't new insights, we all know that one shouldn't be lazy, there's no need to get such advice from a source that mainly wants to teach you how to be a religious conservative.

feos, I think you should watch these videos first, because from what I can tell they have nothing to do with dealing with depression at all. The 2nd video is blaming the person in question for having issues, this is not a good way to help someone dealing with depression.

I watched the second one since it's short enough. I live by this principle for a lot of years. In some situations, the problem can not be fixed by the person who is suffering from it. Someone else can be the reason of that problem, it happens all the time, which is why the world is known for being so unfair. But by simply blaming others, the problem won't fix itself, and most certainly it won't fix the suffering. What fixes the suffering is improving yourself. If I'm imperfect, then my actions could have been the reason of at least some of my problems. And if at least some of it was my fault, then by all means I can try and improve myself. I can be doing what I can, and proportionally, at least some part of the problem can be fixed. This gives hope, cures the devastating feeling of pointless unfairness of reality. This has been my approach to life, both real and internet. All I'm saying in this thread is solely my personal experience. Sometimes a video I've watched happens to emphasize what I know, or even gives me clues I didn't know about. When it happens, I post such a video here. Does any of this sound like a good way to help someone dealing with depression?

Okay, let's talk about that for a minute, self improvement and blaming others for your problems. Trying to become a better person is a good thing, you can't externalize everything. But I would be careful with that philosophy, it can turn into self-loathing. I've seen way too many people doing that, especially on the autism spectrum, blaming themselves for everything. If people have to deal with things like bullying, self improvement is not the primary advice you want to give them. Sometimes, it's more healthy to not blame yourself, as a form of protection. It's all about finding that balance between the two. Just don't look for help by watching a video that literally starts by attacking a presidential candidate, because that has nothing to do with dealing with depression.

As someone who is on the autism spectrum, this is painfully accurate. Ive been bullied in middle school for being different to everyone else, and I had tried to fit in more with others. But I was lying to myself when I said that it’s my fault that I’m a weird kid, or that it’s my fault that i needed assistance in my education. There are appropriate times to ask yourself “should I improve myself”, but this video instead insists that it’s always your fault and you should figure out how to fix it yourself. That’s not helpful to anyone, especially those who are dealing with depression where they feel everything is their fault.

I think we realize that no one is perfect. People in those videos giving advises aren't perfect either. They make mistakes and don't always observe the problem from all available angles. In Good Will Hunting, "It's not your fault" was a cathartic moment that fixed the guy, and it can't be underestimated. At the same time, neither side can be taken as absolute. It's never entirely your fault, and it's never entirely someone else's. You're never absolutely powerful and never absolutely helpless. After all the main problem is suffering from something, and those videos try to provide a clue how to help that. If all you're hearing is "this is all your fault", you're doing it wrong. But claiming those people are deliberately lying is a complete delusion and clearly helps no one.

I still fail to see what an attack on Elizabeth Warren (and including an unflattering picture of her in the thumbnail) has to do with the topic of this thread.

I guess her point that's being disproved is that one's suffering is entirely someone else's fault.

Well, the only thing you can do is get up and keep moving. Keep busy and take it one day at a time. Do things you enjoy and keep in contact with friends and family. Also, if it gets to the point where you simply cannot handle it, there are suicide hotlines that you should call ASAP. Sometimes talking to a stranger that simply does not matter personally to you can be helpful even over the phone. That is the best advise I can give. Things should calm down at some point.

Straw-manning is not exactly helping anything. Please stop this. Let tasvideos.org be one of the few places still left that's free of identity politics. I don't care where you locate yourself in the political spectrum and what political opinions you have. I just want at least one forum on the internet to be free from it. I just want one place where I can go and have a discussion about something else than current real-life politics. If a posted video is inappropriate for a topic, let the moderators remove it if they deem it necessary. Don't make a war about it.

But why is that necessary in the first place? Why can't they just have a life advice video without sending you the clear message that Elizabeth Warren is a terrible candidate? Even if they have to use a controversial figure like Jordan Peterson, they could have left Warren out of the whole thing. But PragerU is a political channel, sending those messages is the point. Go to their recent videos and they'll tell you how "Hate Speech Doesn't Exist", liberally use right wing slurs like "social justice warrior" and feature extremists like Carl Benjamin, Paul Joseph Watson and Steve Bannon. Of course, you can all watch whatever you want, but I don't feel comfortable seeing this content being recommended to people suffering from depression.

It deeply worries me that it is considered "controversial" to call these people what they are. But do what you want, post all this stuff here, I can't stop you. I'll shut up now so you can be happy.

It’s a bit strange how you’re not saying the same thing about the posted video, which is what brought up politics in the first place. All andypanther did was just called it out.

And here we go. It immediately became a flamewar. Sigh. Clearly none of you is going to stop. Fine. I'll stop reading this thread. I'm not interested. Please contain your political bickering inside this one thread. Leave the rest of the forum politics-free, thank you.

I know what happened here: Warp hallucinated his exchange with EZ and andy as being a flame war, so pirate decided to grant him his wish. Anyway, pirate's logic suggests that Trump is better than ponies, which is objectively wrong.
