:D I'm glad we don't have to see the most boring football possible for at least 4 years.

Yeah, this was the most boring match so far. Even Panama was more interesting. Glad to be dead wrong in the prediction.

Spain had plenty of chances to win it. The penalty they conceded was as needless as penalty Argentina conceded in the first half. That said Russia did shitfest their way through that that game. It was as if dragging the game into penalties was their plan from the outset.

I remember reading somewhere that only around 70% of penalty kicks are actually scored. Seeing a missed one is not that rare, With only 11, seeing 6 missed is uncommon, but not that improbable. About the upsets, the World Cup is a very random event. It's always been like that, it's just that people forget about it every four years. I remember Brazil was complete garbage in 1998, even when they had won the cup before. They barely passed the group stage then, even losing to Norway. They still managed to get to the final. In 2002 they played so bad in the qualifiers that they barely made it into the cup. Besides that, they trashed the other teams and won the title. I'm very happy with the current Brazilian team, I've never seen it play so well in the qualifiers. Still, it's the world cup, and it's not improbable that Mexico sends us home tomorrow.

I do think there is a reason why less penalties have scored over time. There's penalty simulation machines that goalkeepers can use to learn penalty takers body language. Goalkeepers come off their line to close down the angle which isn't allowed, but refs rarely enforce the rule. On top of that goalkeepers can research players to learn their penalty taking tendencies. Finally, Goalkeepers are more athletic than the were in the past and can move much faster.

Great match today. But it's time for Neymar to stop the overreactions. It's getting really embarrassing, even when he is right (after all, the dude trod on him for no reason).

Many pundits have commented that this World Cup represents a last hurrah/changing of the guard for Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo. Question is - who do we think are going to be the best players in the world by the time the next World Cup comes round? Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are the most obvious for me. Mbappe in particular has the potential to be considered one of the greatest players of all time (if he fulfils his early promise).

Neymar. Then, many levels below him, Mbappé, Lozano, maybe Pulisic if USA get their shit together; also Isco, Lukaku, Coutinho, Salah, Hazard, Griezmann, and many others still ~30 yo by then. I haven't been impressed by many young players in this cup! That Japan v Belgium game was heartbreaking... I still can't believe how Japan took so many players to a corner kick against fucking Belgium.

Maybe he was truly in great pain, who knows, so I don't care whether it's exaggerated performance or not. This Brazilian team is truly the best I‘ve seen in many years, and certainly has potentials. But it‘s going to meet Belgium and maybe France, which are also very strong teams. The other side with Russia, Columbia, England, Sweden and Switzerland looks weaker to me. Maybe Croatia has the most potential to go into the final.

I'm sad for Colombia and Japan, they deserved a spot in the quarter-finals.

Had Brazil beaten Belgium, that probably would happen tbh. I hope Belgium wins this cup, they're playing really well and deserve they first trophy. I also want to see Russia in the semi-finals at least, rooting for more zebras!

Unfortunately, two of my predictions have come true. I really hoped Brazil would have the chance to meet France. Brazil played very beautifully and showed top-of-the-world strength, and I think would beat Sweden and England very easily. Too bad it met another strong team Belgium and stopped so soon. I have no idea whether France or Belgium would be in the final, but I predict the one that got in the final would beat Croatia and win the World Cup.

FWIW, don't confuse our colleagues from abroad. The use of "zebra", meaning upset, is used only in Brazil. ;) For those who are curious, it comes from an illegal gambling game called jogo do bicho (animal game). Legend says that some guy wrote in a newspaper that a team beating another in some football match would be the same thing as getting a zebra in jogo do bicho (which is impossible, it has 25 animals, none of them is a zebra). It turns out that the upset did happen, so here we say that a "zebra" has happened when an upset occurs in soccer.

Oh! I used to think 'zebra' was a Brazilian term, but I listened it in the first episode of House MD, when House was referring to the possibility a improbable disease causing the patient symptoms, instead of a common one. So I figured 'zebra' was an universal term for improbable events.

To be honest Brazil were the better side today, they had more possession, more chances to score (27 shots!) but Thibault Courtois was astonishing. The best team doesn't always win. I just have this gut feeling that my beloved England side will suffer similarly against Sweden tomorrow. We are a much better team on paper, we will probably outplay them, but that doesn't necessarily mean we will win...
