This run is an improvement of 106 frames (not counting BIOS load time) over the published run by Jungon with minor optimizations, as well as some new strategy on the final boss.
In the original Japanese version, Hayato is blond. In the Western versions he has black hair.
Game Objectives
- Emulator used: BizHawk 2.2.1
- Takes damage to save time
Kenseiden follows the story of Hayato, a samurai looking to retrieve five ability-granting scrolls and kill some evil warlocks. Normally, this involves battling through sixteen levels, the last several of which are very difficult without the abilities gained from the scrolls.
Table of improvements
| Frames saved | Total | Commentary |
---|
Level 2 | 2 | 2 | Second room (stairs) |
---|
Level 9 | 6 | 8 | Second room and sixth room (stairs) |
---|
Level 12 | 12 | 20 | Taking damage no longer is necessary |
---|
Last boss 1 + 2 | 38 + 48 = 86 | 106 | Better optimization and some new strategy |
---|
I forgot to mention that 1 frame was lost during the transition between training level and map (extra loading frame). Most of the input is from Jungon while the new improvements (as well as resync to BizHawk - on both sounds) is by me.
Other comments
Well, another dega run (also the last dega run) is going to be obsolete. Originally I haven't considered that the published any% run could be improved until recently, when I checked level 12 with more attention. Also, this game was the first SMS/GG game that I watched on my entire life, through the Jungon's run, back on 2011.
Now I'll take a break during the last days of 2017 but I'll return to improve the 100% run of Kenseiden. Although I'm late, Merry christmas, TASVideos!
Thanks to Jungon for the published run and for some addresses.
feos: This is a decent improvement so I'll obviously accept it. But the tier of this run is not obvious at all.
This run's gameplay is identical to the existing movie. It copies the overwhelming majority of its input. The game is quite presentable for SMS, but the TASable elements of its gameplay are not that impressive. See for yourself:
Despite of all the positive feedback this submission got, people haven't considered this game enjoyable for 10 years. Having a slightly shorter boss fight (that's only noticeable if you watch the runs side by side) is not a serious argument against the Vault nature of this game.
