Brief Description

Asterix The Gallic War is a strategy game as well as a 3D platformer. Your goal is to collect one ingredient for a magic potion in each of the levels.

The strategy part:

There is a map of Gaul divided into villages. You are playing versus Caesar, each player gets a turn one after another. In each turn you can:
  1. Deploy new troops
  2. Attack: Attack a village that borders on one of your conquered villages
  3. Move Troops: Move troops inside your conquered villages (only between bordering ones)
The result of fights in villages that are not levels depends on when you start your attack but is also somehow influenced by the cursor movement or position.
You can skip the romans turns by saving and loading the file that you just saved. Your turn will reset to Phase A, but the save file includes all previously conquered villages up to the latest conquered main level or bonus level.

The platform part:

  • Normal levels: You try to reach a potion ingredient at the end of the level, there are several parts where you can't move on until you defeated all enemies on the screen.
  • Bonus 1 (Barrel Break): Find and punch the barrel that flies up and defeat all romans.
  • Bonus 2 (Throw the Roman): Throw romans over a certain total distance with at most 3 tries.
A trick that I found is that you can use super powered punches at no cost and with no time loss. You just have to attack with a normal punch, then you activate the super punch before you hit an enemy. This way your punch will have the same effect like a super powered punch but the same speed like a normal punch. This does only work on ground and not in air.

Other notes:

  • The game forces you to play all 7 main levels as well as all 4 bonus levels in order to proceed to the pirate ship.
  • You need to enter a level with at least 6 troops to be able to activate the super punch
  • You sometimes have to wait for enemies to spawn, moving around will change the time they spawn/enter the screen
  • When you hold the spear of an enemy, other enemies will be damaged when running into you which is used a few times
  • You can use the mini map to navigate slightly faster from the main village to other areas
  • Before entering the pirate ship you are forced to take all these potions
  • On the pirate ship you need the flying ability to get high enough to destroy the lattice. You do not fall fast enough while having the flying ability, so you have to wait for its effect to run out.
Unfortunately I could not figure out how to manipulate the key position in Aqua Calidae or the mini game positions, but I think the run is still quite enjoyable to watch.

Thanks to:

  • UnderscorePoY: for finding the save/load trick and providing additional information about his run

Fog: Judging.
Fog: Pretty meh game, pretty meh audience reception, but good technical qualities.

checks Nah, you didn't. It's fine tho. If the game has next to no RNG this should be an easy fix to make. You need to make sure you've disabled these before you start TASing the game. And iirc you were halfway through before attempting to do this.

I attempted to change the sync settings but it desynced. I'm too lazy to try and fix it more. Nevertheless, it's fine as it is.

Hey, sorry about the long delay in posting to this thread, but I'm fairly interested in this run and have not been able to get PSX emulation to work for me. Would anyone be willing to make an encode? It would probably increase interest in the submission too. Thanks!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Well done, though it still looks like a real-time attack. It's not your fault, it's just that the game isn't much TASable. Meh vote.

Thank you for encode. You make a good job but this game is very plate, no ? I knew that Romans in Asterix's universe has afraid by the Gallics, but in point you can just run and past... A.I is bad like music isn't good for Asterix's theme (but it's generally true for all Asterix games !), but it's not your fault ! Meh vote, I'm sorry!

Thanks, fog, for the encode, and wesen for the run. The game's platforming is usually too simple to be really interesting. Nice job finding the glitch for super punches, but it also makes the combat very repetitive. There are fairly few places to play around in this game as well... I was most disappointed seeing you just sit on the side in that one rolling log section (though I imagine that also saved lag). It seems really weird to hear UK English in the closing video credits for Asterix ;-) The run is fine, but I think I also have to vote Meh.

For the difficulty choices, what are the differences between the difficulties in this game?

The difficulty changes the amount of moves of each type per turn (hard = 2; normal = 3; easy = 4) and the amount of roman troops per village. In this run I only used two of the three possible moves (deploying troops and attacking) Thanks for encoding the run, I would provide an encode myself but my PC is not powerful enough to play back the TAS without stuttering. Also thanks to everyone who took the time to watch and vote the run.

That is not a problem. BizHawk is able to dump video without lag even if your pc is not able to run the game at full speed.
