Post subject: Should you SNES videos stretch to fullscreen?

I found this when I searching for ways to make my videos better: Link to video
me playing smw at 720x405 then encoding it at 720x480 in WMM, then putting "yt:stretch=16:9" at then end of my tags

I was looking for ways to stretch my videos without losing the quality and I was wondering how practical is doing this method.

That method is not even possible anymore, as the yt:stretch tags were abolished almost a year ago. Also, WMM is horrible, and that video quality looks horrible. To get high-quality SNES footage stretched to 16:9 (not that I would do this, 8:7 video stretched to 16:9 looks terrible), dump the SNES video at its native 256x224, then upscale that with avisynth or VirtualDub or anything else decent up to a resolution of 3584x2016. With that, the pixels are stretched by an integer scale, so they don't lose quality, and it has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Encode the resulting video with your codec of choice and upload that to YouTube, and you'll have a nice 4K sharp-looking SNES footage without quality loss with the 16:9 stretch you wanted.

This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. How do I do that with Virtualdub? Also, I have a video editor if it helps.

With VirtualDub, Video -> Filters -> Add... -> resize, and you'll get resize options. But if you have another video editor that can do that, that's probably a more convenient option for you.

The resize options on Virtualdub are confusing but I will give it a shot. I will see if I could apply the options in my editor first.

"Fullscreen" videos like this are a pain to watch, just saying.

creaothceann, now I'm curious to know what is the original picture. EDIT: nevermind, I'm stupid.

It's Guernsey's avatar. This might be an interesting exercise for you encoding types, but for me as a viewer, it doesn't look right to display something at an aspect ratio it wasn't designed for. Leave the SNES at 4:3, please.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

This avatar was from long ago but I do not remember where I got it. Are you sure? I just assumed that most people would want it fullscreen due to Youtube standards. Youtube has changed a lot and I thought that have it fullscreen would be better.

Stretched imagery just looks wrong. Don’t do it.

Why did you stretch it to 16:9 instead of 4:3 though?
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

The second one I suppose.....I thought the widescreen/fullscreen would be better. The first one looks wider and it feels stretched out.

Were you referring to me?

It's not, because:

I'm one of the very few people who is especially sensitive to video footage stretching. If a video (especially a live action one) uses an aspect ratio that's wrong by just a few percents, I notice it. The more it deviates from its original aspect ratio, the more I notice it and the more it bothers me. 4:3 -> 16:9 stretching goes well beyond what I can tolerate. I can't watch such video footage. It's way too annoying.

I am kind of the opposite but I am starting to realize that 19:9 doesn't work for SNES, Genesis or 16-bit games in general. I guess I just didn't like the borders but if I have to keep the borders, I will keep that borders.

Would not suggest 19:9

I hate 16:9 stretching, so a workaround would be a semi-atlas encode, using a lua script, like this:
Games are basically math with a visual representation of this math, that's why I make the scripts, to re-see games as math. My things: YouTube, GitHub, Pastebin, Twitter

I meant 16:9. I messed up that line.

I could something like that if only not to make the borders notable. Are borders a bad thing or they really appealing?

Borders are just a consequence of changing monitor standards. If you get an old 4:3 CRT monitor you wouldn't get any borders at all (when stretching the emulator output to cover the whole screen). Or get one of those small 1280x1024 LCD screens that were used for some time; their aspect ratio is 5:4, so a 4:3 image would be 1280x960 and you'd have only 32 pixels of border at the top and at the bottom (6.25% of the height). Personally I just turn off the lights when playing (late in the evening). PS: Note that the above "atlas" method is very game-specific and also can't be used for all scenes.

I was referring to Youtube standards but then again, these are old games that I playing and Youtube doesn't some of those cool features anymore.

For YT there are other solutions; e.g. I use "Black Youtube Theme 5.6.1-signed" Youtube Black Theme.
