Here is a TAS of one of my favorite Rom Hacks for Super Metroid. You can find the hack and some information here http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2069/ and here http://forum.metroidconstruction.com/index.php?topic=3125.0 I chose Super Metroid - Escape2 version 1.9 because its newer(better?) and I'm much more familiar with it than hard version 1.8.

  • Emulator used: lsnes rr-B23
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Uses warp

About making the run

I played this hack for the first time over a year ago and I enjoyed it very much. After couple of weeks of playing the hack I wanted to see if anyone has made a TAS of this fantastic hack and I couldn't find any. I have had a little bit of experience with TASing before, but have never completed any. I started to plan on how to make a TAS of this Hack and what kind of TAS should I make. After some planning and testing I found out that a warped any% run would be easiest and wouldn't take too much time to make and could be rather interesting to watch as well. Routing this run was easy after I did some testing, but learning all the technical stuff about the game and efficient use of TASing tools took some time and I certainly still have lot to learn. Making of this video took about 6-7 months on and off, longer than I had anticipated but I'm pretty happy how it turned out.

About the run

What warp?

In this hack there is a( special) secret area( which is actually pretty hard to find since it doesn't even show up with the X-ray Scope) where you can "acquire" the "Secret Key"(done by saving the animals there). "Acquiring the secret key" allows player the access to MB straight away from the Warp Station. This warp is used in this run and it probably at least halves the time that this run would otherwise take to finish. "Secret key" also enables a very fast escape by allowing access to Samus's ship in an alternate place that would "normally" be inaccessible. "Secret key" has other uses as well but they are not present in this run.

Wave Beam?

There are two places where you can find the Wave Beam upgrade in this hack. The first one that I'd assume that almost all players would get( without knowing the special feature and/or location of the other one) is very easy to find and pick up. That one doesn't have any special properties in it(regular Wave Beam upgrade). But the second one that is well hidden( The one that I get in this run), gives you entirely different kind of Wave Beam(?). On a side note, If you have already picked up Wave Beam, then you find Super Missiles(iirc, but not Wave Beam at least) there instead. I can't be sure about whether this "special" upgrade is intentional or not, but I believe it is intentional(its not buggy or anything). This upgrade allows me to skip lots of items I would have to otherwise collect around the Planet Sporespawn and speeds up upcoming boss fights quite a bit too.

Game mechanics

There are also few differences in Escape2 and vanilla SM when it comes to game mechanics. I used every bit of information about the SM mechanics I could find here and some other sites as well, but I also had to test lots of stuff myself because of some unique mechanics in this hack that aren't documented for TASing or otherwise helpfully anywhere that I could find. I hope I didn't miss any obvious tricks or anything that I could have used to go even faster!

Other comments

Btw. This run is also a low% run as well as an any% run(afaik).
I think the audience would like the new tricks and game play mechanics in this video that aren't present in any other TAS of SM or SM Hack. Also I'd like to suggest to anyone who is going to play Escape2 for the first time not to use "Secret Key" or that "special upgrade", because it would pretty much ruin lots of the surprises and overall the great experience the hack has to offer.
There is not much room for improvements that I can think of in this movie, but one thing that almost certainly has a bit of room for improvement is the lag reduction in the MB room, MB2, MB3 and maybe after it. The lag is quite random( unpredictable) in there in my experience that I can't be sure if some different strategy might be faster.

I would like to thank the author of this hack Hiroishi, tasvideos.org for all the information, SM TASing and speedrunning communities and also Perkule for finding and informing me about that "special upgrade". Oh and I almost forgot, big thanks to Ilari for making this awesome emulator!

Nach: This is a nice run with mostly positive feedback, although the mood regarding the run appeared to be not so enthusiastic about it compared to what we normally expect for hacks. While this hack appears to be from the better quality ones, much of its areas seem to be copy & pasted from the original game with minor changes. Some of the level design is also questionable. Coupling all that with only mild recognition online of this hack, I don't think it rises to the level that screams quality and distinguishes itself as being a well designed game apart from the original, while still making use of its potential. Hacks need to be of the highest quality and provide a TASing experience beyond our typical entertainment levels, since I don't find this to measure up to the high bar we now expect from Super Metroid related runs and hack quality, rejecting.

Can you explain the differences between 1.9 and 1.8, specifically around this. 2. Is it more known/interesting than [2381] SNES Metroid Super ZeroMission "101%" by Hoandjzj in 1:19:30.64? (Yes, I know we have several Mario Hacks, but the question still stands.)

1. I'm not very familiar with the 1.8 version. I played it a little bit about a year ago, but don't remember any major differences except Sporespawn fight and Ridley fight were different, harder. Oh and you had to "kill" Ridley in Ceres iirc. I admit it was a bit lazy of me in a sense that I haven't tested that version, but I don't think it really matters since I'm happy with the version choice and the run that I made. 2. No. I'm quite sure that Super ZeroMission is more known and probably more intresting than this run. I like that TAS very much and my personal opinion is that Escape2 is pretty much as good hack as Super Zeromission, both top tier hacks. <edit> I deleted the last sentence

Actually no, your question does not stand. A hack or a game has nothing to do with another hack or a game, or how popular it is. As long as a hack is different enough from the original game, is entertaining, which is what we are voting for, then those are of no concern.

Thanks for the encode, Zakem66. The run looked very well optimized and the new speed booster mechanics look very interesting. The question is whether all of this is really enough to set it apart enough from any other Super Metroid hack, and especially Super Metroid Zero Mission. I kind of wish this site was more inclusive toward hacks, but we've had this discussion before. Anyhow, good work on the run Zakem. Voting Yes for entertainment.

This run looks really well done! I have a couple of questions. 1. Why do you pick up the third energy tank? I'll admit that I was a little distracted while watching, but I don't seem to remember you needing that extra health at any point. Is it a necessary pickup? Could a 10% be done instead (and subsequently claimed as low%+any%)? 2. When you do some of the shine-spark chains, what made it faster to de-spark and shoot a door open in some circumstances over using the shine-spark-ball to lay a bomb and carry your spark through into the next room? I saw some instances where you had to shoot a super missile, for example, but other times you shot a regular shot at a door after stopping the spark.

@DiscoRico Thanks, 1. 3 E tanks is minimum since MB2 hits with the rainbow beam doing 300 damage, when having Varia suit on. Without Varia that would be 600 damage. 2. It was pretty much the next room layout and sometimes the next room after that which affects the strategy I use in each situation. Often times I need to maintain the shinespark because there is not much room in the next room to gain speed and to get another shinespark charge whitout losing time. I didn't test every possibile scenario in every situation and there is possibility of error there somewhere. I don't think I understand the last question, sorry.. @scrimpeh Thank you.

Okay I actually took my time and watched the whole thing and I can definitely confirm this hack is not in the slightest (as far as I am concerned) like any other hacks I've seen before. It was definitely fast paced, entertaining and quite optimized. I really dig that Samus enters a giant green living planet :D Voted yes and good job my man!

You answered the question perfectly! Yes vote for entertainment, will agree that this hack is sufficiently different from at least vanilla SM.

That Shinespark is weird. And there's not a lot of limitations on its use, at least under TAS conditions. I'm not really thrilled by the level design though. Lots of use of the outside-the-Wrecked Ship tileset, long corridors that don't do much, etc. And the portion of the run in which you have the shinespark is pretty brief (and rightfully so), which unfortunately means that most of the run is pretty pedestrian. Especially since the person who made the hack decided to leave the Ceres station section in. I'mma vote meh.

Giving it a Meh. Seems well optimized, but the Shinespark is so broken that it doesn't really FEEL like a Shinespark.

I feel the palettes of this hack look Contra-ish for some reasons. Yes vote for entertainment and saving the animals.

Interesting job here. The hack actually makes really significant changes to Ceres, for instance, and the idea of a Warp Station is sort of cool. I feel like there aren't as many interesting enemy layouts, though, with too much empty space, and the game really overuses blue colors in its palette. The shinespark usage is pretty cool. It gets slowed down a lot once you make a lot of turns though. I would guess that it makes a 100% run look more repetitive, though, since you could probably shinespark a lot of places instead of using space jump. Did I also see bullets fly differently in this version? It looked like you were able to make angled shots that I think are impossible in the original game. And how do you get infinite super missiles fighting against Mother Brain? I'm somewhere between Meh and Yes here in terms of entertainment. Regardless, the technical level of play looks very high. Nice job!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) I did realtime speedruns of this hack recently so it's really cool to see that we have basically the same backbone in our routing. Everything looks really solid, you did a great job! I feel like a no secret area run would be super sick to watch or finding a way to include the boss gauntlet or something would be even better. It's a shame true 100% and an all bosses playthrough isn't possible in one go, the movement options that this hack affords along with the routing options are pretty special amongst other Super Metroid hacks. I voted yet

well i was overdosed with the metroid stuff but the games twists ( planet sporespawn lol ) and the controlable shinepark made it more tolerable. the hack looks optimised, no majors downtimes, going for a yes... also, no (normal) metroids where harmed durring the making of this TAS.... one last question, can MB be shinesparked to death or only draygon can ?
