Game Overview
Luigi's Mansion is an adventure horror game released in late 2001. It was a launch title for Nintendo's GameCube console, and it is the second title in which Luigi is the main character. Luigi wins a mansion from a contest that he never entered in the first place. He asks Mario to investigate, but Mario soon goes missing. Luigi must now search for his lost brother. To help him along the way, Professor E. Gadd gives him the Poltergust 3000, a powerful vacuum that you can capture ghosts with, and a Game Boy Horror, so Luigi and the professor can communicate.
Given that it's nighttime, Luigi's pretty tired, so he decides to find Mario in under one hour so he can get to bed.
For reference, this is about 5 minutes and 35 seconds faster than the current real-time record of 58:09 (RTA timing ends upon receiving King Boo's crown as opposed to last input). The run can be seen here: [dead link removed]

Why start from a save file?
Completing the game once unlocks the hidden mansion mode, which lets you skip the tutorial and gives Luigi a more powerful vacuum to suck up ghosts faster. That's all.
General Overview of Game Mechanics
This game is fairly simple in what you need to do: suck up all the ghosts. Almost always, you need to point the flashlight at the ghost to stun it. Then you can use the vacuum to drain its health. Once it reaches 0 health there are 2 animations that a ghost can do as it enters the vacuum, a twirl and a wave. The twirl is faster in almost every case. I'll get into that a bit more later. If ghosts are close enough together you can suck them up at the same time. Using the Game Boy Horror and then looking at a mirror will let Luigi return to the main foyer. This is used whenever walking to the next location is slower than returning to the mansion first.
Tricks/Tactics
Facing away from a ghost's spawn point and then facing the ghost as it spawns causes Luigi to rotate while getting scared. This way the flashlight immediately points at the ghost so it gets stunned at the first possible opportunity.
Scare Skipping: Using the Game Boy Horror and then closing it right as a ghost spawns causes Luigi to skip the “getting scared” animation. This allows him to move freely as the ghost is still spawning.
Money Skip: I avoid picking up money so that the tally at the end of each area doesn't count up any money at all. This saves a few seconds.
R-Pumping: When sucking up boos, they will begin to move away after losing 10 health. Letting go of the vacuum button and then pressing it again causes the boo to stay in its current position. This can only be done 15 times before the boo gains complete control and leaves the room.
Text Skipping: Sucking up a boo and then sucking up something else causes the game to ignore that you just sucked up a boo. This skips E. Gadd talking to Luigi.
L-Cancelling: Upon entering dark rooms, Luigi will whip out his flashlight while standing still. By pressing L to release either fire, water, or ice, Luigi can move while taking out his flashlight.

A very enjoyable run and good commentary with it. Hopefully the starting from a save file thing won't cause any annoyances if that is how the usual records for this game are set, skipping the tutorial where applicable is usually good.
Enjoys speedruns but hasn't actually tried making any yet.

hidden mansion new game plus is also faster with the ghost sucking
I want all good TAS inside TASvideos, it's my motto. TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

Loved this TAS, the commentary makes it even better. There was so much going on at once and you could really see how the games mechanics were abused as much as possible. Strong yes vote from me! I also agree with starting from a premade save, a fresh one would only be slower without adding anything of interest.
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

Great job with this. At first, I was sort of iffy about using a mode that makes the vacuum inflict damage faster, but it really allows you to make more ghost captures without the ghosts flying out of the room. That, and the combos you pulled off (especially that one five-combo or something like that) were quite impressive. I feel like if you're already getting most of the Boos, it wouldn't be that much out of your way to have a 100% run instead of any%. This is great in the meantime, though.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. 100% includes more than just all boos, you also have to get the best rank at the end.

I'm uncomfortable with this being published, unlabeled as "New Game+". You're using rewards from completing the game as a tool to speed up the run, so that's precisely what it is. I'm all for this being published, just label it correctly please.

In the breaker room where you talk about boos cackling, could you have sucked up the table cloth immediately after sucking up the boo to save some time on dialogue or something? Or am I not understanding that trick quite right? Awesome run, I really enjoyed it!

This. What the hell is wrong with people saying starting from dirty SRAM is acceptable? Have you all gone stupid? Everything on this site starts from clean SRAM (except for NG+ and such) and I’m sure 99% of those movies are only more boring, often with just unskippable story cutscenes added because of it (hello Mega Man ZX). So what? That’s the fucking policy that’s always been used. What the fuck is everyone saying? Edit: I don’t know this game but for example in Diddy Kong Racing, TASes have always started from clean SRAM, which makes you use a slower character than what RTAs do. So if Luigi’s Mansion is the same and RTAs consider NG+ normal for any%, that doesn’t mean TASes should. Oh also, the MMZX TAS starts from clean SRAM which only adds unskippable cutscenes, but RTAs don’t and skip cutscenes for any%. I’m just assuming RTA had something to do with the NG+ choice here but just saying.

ALAKTORN, I think the relevant question should be the one we bring up any time an easier difficulty is used: does the harder difficulty make things any more interesting, as opposed to just making the characters grind for longer? With Diddy Kong Racing, for instance, there's the added entertainment of seeing the handling of an inferior car when you don't use NG+. On the other hand, the easier difficulty is used in Kaze Kiri since harder difficulty causes no strategy changes. (Earthworm Jim 2 had similar reasons for using easy difficulty.) In this case, I believe a lower-powered vacuum wouldn't change any strategies of how to manipulate luck or suck up ghosts. It would mean that more Boos would escape the room, so the player would have to hunt down ghosts in more rooms. That just adds on to the length of the movie while giving no new content or strategy. In this NG+ run, however, there's the added amazement of being able to barely suck up a 300HP Boo before it gets out of the room. I will say, though, that the standards you mention do seem inconsistent for MMZX. That's a more minor point though, since the actual gameplay time is unaffected there. With Luigi's mansion, the vacuum's strength is a major factor affected by the use of NG+.

This, plus see if the use of the OoB glitch would help since it requires opening the chest, it can only be done once, so it's not as gamebreaking as the use in a any%.

Because the purpose of SRAM here is to lower the difficulty of the run. We have enough precedent to allow runs from SRAM if the setup is verified and if there is a substantial-enough reason why a run from SRAM is preferred. Thus, if we're judging whether SRAM usage is a good idea, we have to address the difficulty of the run. On that note, is there a verification file for the SRAM usage?

I really enjoyed this run. Commentary was great too, though there was a point I think near the big boo fight where two lines overlapped each other, at least on the no mini-map version. It's also unfortunate that Dolphin still doesn't render the Mario painting effect. It's the only really jarring graphical issue I noticed from having played on console. If I could vote, it'd be a yes from me.

Not really, DKR is actually very similar to this game, where having the advantages of NG+ makes the run significantly more interesting. You just don't have the same crazy speed without the unlockable character TT, so in the end, all you would get in a newgame TAS would be the same strats done slower. I have no doubts that the upcoming DKR run will easily be accepted as a NG+ when providing a verification movie. (I'm not talking about the glitched NG+ by the way, that one essentially just copies a completed file and is super boring)

It would take too much time to set it up because it takes a long time to suck off the cloth. If I start pulling off the cloth, it's hard to continue sucking up the boo while R pumping because the vacuum current latches to the cloth.

add a NG+ tag on the submition and it's yes vote from me edit : the tag is there so the contreversy should end, great run, great technique ( the 5 ghost in one was amazing) i liked it. also, the comentary + map should be published along side the standard encode, it makes it more "newcomer friendly"

After you complete the game, you will return to Professor E. Gadd's laboratory. When he asks you where you want to go, you'll notice a new option, the "Hidden Mansion". This is essentially the game's "hard mode". The Poltergust is about 1.5 times more powerful, but ghosts put up more of a fight to escape its pull. There are more powerful ghosts in earlier rooms: for example, the invisible Grabber ghosts first appear in the Wardrobe Room, but appear much later in the Normal Mansion. Because of all this, there is much more treasure to be found in the Hidden Mansion, making it more rewarding, and easier to achieve a Rank A mansion at the end.
That's for NTSC. The PAL version is listed further down. Also note this was from a wiki, so "hard" is subjective.

Can I suggest something? Can somebody remove the category name of this sub and put a category name to the published run, like... "chest glitch" or something? It would make a bit more sense in my opinion.
