After 1 year of work, it's finally done!

This game is named "Super Mario 74" and it is a "Super Mario 64" ROM hack made by Lugmillord. The major differences of this hack are new harder levels, and the number of Stars which has been increased to 151.

Game Objectives:

  • Emulator used: Mupen64-rerecording-v2-reset
  • 100% completion
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Genre: Platform
The goal of this speed run is to obtain all 151 Stars (100%).

Comments:

Finally! This is the first full SM64 hack completed at 100% in a TAS. I'm very happy with the final result even if every star could be improved.

Explanation of the reset at 95 stars:

I used the reset recording version of Mupen64 because in almost all SM64 hacks, Koopa the Quick has an issue; when Mario enters a specific level, then leaves this level by exiting, dying or taking a star, Koopa "forgets" his intended route. Here's a video with an example. As you can see, Koopa would never finish the race. To fix this issue, you just need to restart the game.

Tricks:

See this page for a brief description of all the tricks used in this run.

Special Thanks:

A huge thanks to sonicpacker for encoding and publishing the movie on his channel!
This TAS wouldn't have looked like this and gotten this time without these people:
zeldafan3478: He showed me 100-coin star routes, other strategies, and he made some "151 stars" speedruns.
TheLaQuiTu: He showed me 100-coin star routes and strats.
SigotusSM64: The best "151 stars" speedrunner, I watched his runs to give me ideas.
Br3taigne: He showed me some 100-coin routes.
Ark Circum: He heavily improved "Luminium-Sphere" and "Ombru-Sphere" 100-coin routes and he showed me some strategies.
DennisBalow: He made some single stars TAS runs with crazy strats I used.
This was my favourite frame.
Enjoy this movie!!
GoddessMaria: Judging.
GoddessMaria: There are a few minor issues within the run such as a few movement and route scenarios, but not enough to drag the run down. The hack itself also qualifies under site rules. Reception was very good for both and the optimization is solid still.
Accepting for Moons!

I'm not a fan of the idea in this case since it has neither 1440p nor 60fps
60fps? Isn't SM64 30fps anyway?
I think it was just a statement for an either or. Game runs at 30fps.

Is black screen with music playing intended after the "SSECRET WOODS BY CELUX AKA SKELUX" screen?

Yes. It blacks out by itself and I attempted to cut the video at an appropriate audio interval.

homerfunky has trouble with English and asked me to post about the publication link again.

That's aside from the fact that the TVC encode is inferior to mine. Mine has the crop that viewers prefer (taking up the whole player), the FPS isn't choppy in random places throughout, and 1440p is superior to 1080. 60 FPS is also useless for this game (especially with choppy frames...). It also looks like my raw encode was either better or the "official" one is overcompressed. To people that hate me: Please don't make this about me, Nintendo has this upload claimed because of the Dire, Dire Docks music, and homerfunky himself wants this change.

I had to compress it because I'm not ready to spend 2 weeks uploading 80 GBs to TVC. I can reencode it whenever it's possible to send to TVC directly. And so much free space might be a problem. Resolution: my upload is 1536p, blame youtube. FPS: do you mean .kkapture is actually missing frames? I might capture with target fps 120, but again, file size... Cropping: whatever, I used what emulator outputs, isn't it what N64 outputs to TV? As for youtuber in the publication, we indeed could use yours, but put (copypaste) our youtuber description.

Youtube can't handle variable framerate, can it?

sonicpacker, did you know GPU can force supersampling and anisotropic filtering for mupen64 regardless of whether plugins support it or not? I personally dumped with Jabo that supports is internally, but GPU made even Glide64 look way better with those options. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16556 Not that it puts a shadow on your upload, just sharing ideas.

Look at a bunch of people who don't know what they're talking about as opposed to the maker of the run and experienced TASers? Great idea, but I think I'll pass.
Hey, homerfunky, should I watch your run?

I wonder how your 43GB encode is so much better than mine when mine is 43GB as well! How did you encode it? Maybe by dropping every other frame (to make it effectively 30fps) you succeeded to preserve twice as good quality? If so, I really can still improve mine. PS: I don't think null frames add anything to file size anyway.

That wasn't something to find offense over. I am simply using it as evidence for what the correct scenario for this situation would be, which is rightfully linking to my upload, as homerfunky requested.

No need to wonder when you can just look at it. Not that this is something to compete/find offense over.
So, how did you encode it?

My guess is with a series of 24-bit bitmaps interleaved with waveform audio. YouTube does the rest. It would be less than that, but YouTube doesn't support Lossless codecs.

I've split off a hugely derailed flame fest about adding sonicpacker's YouTube encode to the publication, as homerfunky had requested (which I've done a while ago).
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

If someone ever wants to go for an improvement, make sure to use the "Fixed Warps" ROM. It's pretty much a 1.1 version of this hack, with the huge benefit of putting Mario in front of the level entrances after he exits a level, just like in the original SM64. This saves minutes in a 151 and makes the run much more entertaining!
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.
