That is unfortunate. Well, barring any notable improvements, it has my vote for next years nominations.

I decided to make a video explaining how the bouncing trick seen in the Hero Story TAS is done. It should be useful for every other TASer that wants to try this game! Link to video

Bouncing Bouncing is a game breaking trick that is done by pressing B 30-20 times/sec (depending on the terrain)
Could someone please tell me what exactly these terrains are that require less than 30 B inputs/sec and why that is? I'd like to know in case it's pertinent to the tas I'm making.

Flat terrains require 30 bounces/sec, done by pressing B everytime it's possible (like it's shown in the video I posted here). Some ascending and descending terrains require 20 bounces/sec though, as it takes 2 frames to go up (ascending terrain) or 2 frames to go down (descending terrain) in the bounce. In those cases, the bounces are done in the same way as before, you just have to extend the B press for 1 frame (descending terrain) or extend the "not pressing B" action for 1 frame (ascending terrain). I hope this helps :P

So I'm having this really weird problem and I'm hoping someone here could help. So at this part in my tas I have sonic bouncing to go fast, and all of a sudden the bouncing just does not seem to work. Up to this point my input has been: 1.B+which ever direction gives the most speed. 2.angle for position 3.B+direction And I just repeat this every frame. But all of a sudden that doesn't work and it seems like I have to go: 1.B 2.direction 3.direction 4.B If I try to push B on that 3rd frame it seems to not register.(This is all on flat ground btw) I've already done this 3 times previously in the tas and had no issues so far. As far as I can tell this is on flat ground and I have no idea as to why this is happening. This is painfully frustrating so if anyone knows what is going on, help would be appreciated.

If we are experiencing the same problem, Dolphin for some reason do not register input for some blank frame.

That's one of the reasons that revision 3.0-735 was used for the TAS, that revision doesn't have input lags that don't allow us to bounce at all. If you're using another revision and is going for in-game time, you can just pause the game right before this lag and unpause after it so you can bounce in the right frame, without losing in-game time.

Perhaps I'll just redo what I've done on that revision. I'm not too far in, and I've also noticed an improvement I can make anyway. :P

Do we know why it's ignoring an input? I wouldn't recommend using old versions like that, as the physics won't match console.

Do newer versions have that problem worse? I thought 3.0-735 had it's fair share of "dead frames" or whatever it is that people call them. Only reason I wanted to use that version was because it worked better on my laptop which was all I had when we started the TAS, lol. Normally to avoid those lag frames, I just slightly alter the analog input before the bounce, and if you're bouncing every 3 frames, sometimes pressing B a frame early and holding it for two will solve the problem. Throughout my days I've encountered this problem in a lot more situations than just bouncing, by the way. SA2 seems to just have a weird problem where it misplaces what input was on what frame(?) When that initially happens, or when the game finally fixes itself, there will be a frame where either no inputs work, or inputs are copied from the previous frame. Again, messing around with inputs leading up to this frame can normally stop it from happening, or at least delay it to a less inconvenient time.

Is it the actual game doing that, or is Dolphin's input handling just bad. I'd totally believe either at this point.

it's impossible for me to say for sure. I couldn't tell you if the game does that on console or if it's just emulation bug, it's too small a thing to test on console. I can tell you however, that PAL has a similar problem on console. Where the frame they "removed" every 6 frames to make the game run at 50 FPS (x:x2 IGT) will double inputs. Pressing A on those frames acts like using a pause to press a button twice in two frames, but it doesn't require a pause. It may not mean anything and be completely unrelated, but it gives a similar outcome to when the game just randomly doubles inputs on NTSC while TASing, so who knows.

Okay, so I redid part of the tas and made an improvement, but the issue only returned later. It seems what is happening is that the input is being delayed like so: 1.Input 2. 3.Input performed on this frame The input display shows the input on the correct frame, but nothing is happening until the frame after. I don't think this is the game as this is exactly the same as something that has come up when I do ssbm tases, where I need to do an input a frame early for what I want to happen. I never thought it was a problem with that as it was very easy to workaround. But not with this :/. If necessary I'll just pause the game for a while and edit that out after I finish, but I'd rather not redo this.

Yeah, this is the problem that came up a lot in Pyramid Cave for some reason. Like I said, redoing angles will normally fix it, but that can be pretty annoying and hit or miss. I wish there was better advice to give.
