Also, the more the video and the audio coincide, the better.
Well, the catching of Missingno could also be showed, as this glitch is so well known. But maybe you're right and not everyone would find this interesting, it's just that I'm a big fan of Pokémon-TASes ^^

We also must showcase the tools we use besides rerecording. Lua scripts look very cool for Sonic or Mario jump prediction, hitbox for an invisible sprite, all kinds of HUDs and stuff. FCEUX has a feature where Hex Editor (Memory Viewer) highlights addresses that are changing dynamically. I also could shoot a bit of symbolic debugging.

If you want to show off an unlikely Pokémon catch, you could show Mewtwo being caught in a regular Pokéball; that should be pretty recognisable to any Pokémon fan as being something that shouldn't happen. I doubt there's any way to convey it to people who aren't fans of the series, though.

Personally, I always liked this part in the Super Metroid runs, skipping the boss after getting the bombs. But I'm not sure myself if it would be a good choice for the video, even for the "slow motion" sequence.

I think the game music isn't needed. If it could be somehow disabled though then the sound effects could be used.

Meshuggah I want to say your older tas for Battletoads since it was more crazier. 2157M - Crazy Spaz and Game over glitch Since obsoleted TASes have been mentioned too.

So I've started to create a big list of all the proffered clips. Was my last post TL;DR cause I don't see a lot of categorization/linking happening, although sometimes it's quite clear that it's a boss fight or zipping... sometimes it's hard to tell how impressive the trick is (i.e. pixel perfect or not quite, doable real-time?) So could you check your posts please? It would even be great if you included a short narrative for the tricks so I know better what I'm seeing... e.g. one of the first clips suggested is Super Mario Bros 2, level 3-2, crossing the gap with a POW and an Ostro, but I don't understand what the POW does in the clip. So it's very difficult to judge how impressive the trick really is. For that one I'm going to use it for a category like "Outside the Box", "Movement tricks" or "Sequence Breaking", but maybe it's also "Precision". Although admittedly this makes me into a kind of independent judge as well, seeing everything from the uninformed viewer's point of view. So I have IGNORED everything that didn't have a link to the whole run's video so I can see how far in it is even if they were great suggestions. I just didn't want the extra work when it wouldn't be so much work for each one to find links to their own suggestions (and write down a few words about it). It's just more likely you'll be able to find the clip and the right place faster than me if you at least know the game... So I need the following: -link directly to the right spot in a video of the WHOLE run -what episode/world/level it is, e.g. Super Mario Bros 2 3-2 or Mega Man 4 Cossack-2 So don't get me wrong guys, I like a lot of the suggestions and I'm ready to put in a lot of work myself, but the video should represent us as a community and there's limits to how much I can represent the community by myself. ----- What is the last word on where to extract the clips from? Nach suggested just YouTube HD videos? Someone was saying something about encoding especially for this video.

Downloading YouTube encodes would also be acceptable anyway.

Svimmer send me a message on which exact points you are using. Besides downloading the Youtube encodes.

What should the timing be based on? the YouTube video? does it matter if it's not super-exact? and why do you need it if the youtube encodes are good enough? EDIT Spikestuff, here's a sample of what info I'm collecting. Is everything alright with it? The clip link has the starting time (as shown in the YouTube player) and "length" indicates how long the clip should be. movie - 1001 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdKgAsWYl2g#t=7m20s length - 8 NES Super Mario Bros 2 scene - crossing pit in 3-2 I'm downloading the YouTube videos in WebM HD1080p with Vorbis 192K sound. This should be OK right? Or whatever happens to be highest available quality. So I currently have just the movie number but would it be better to give you the whole link to the movie page every time?

Metroid Bridge Surely the coolest moment of any run that I've worked on. I suppose my allsoul runs should have something interesting; some of the bosses getting obliterated or an extremely unlikely event occuring (such as getting Muramasa and Lubicant soul on the same frame), but probably not as impressive to someone who hasn't played the game. As for the music, I would suggest something videogame related. I really liked the song in the last one (Travel Demon by S.S.H) because it was exactly that. The pace of the song was fantastic too because most of the clips were infact very fastpaced. Also, reusing old clips is dumb. I see half of the clips suggested already being represented in older promotional videos. Surely there has to be more footage than this since the last one, and if there isn't then it's maybe too early to make a new video.

The clip Kriole posted reminded me of more cool stuff from Zero Mission, none of these are even close to possible unassisted: 100%: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyCm3wVJSE4&t=7m50s Unintended Bomb jumping to a certain Missile tank, when it was found this trick allowed for a fairly significant route change (leaving a boss for cleanup). any%: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBMMiw4TX6Q&t=16m5s Clever movement option abuse results in super fast upwards movement and a minor skip. low%: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TZi3OtsZb8&t=15m33s Traveling across this pit in this manner was discussed years prior to the TAS as it helps the route A LOT, I don't think anyone got anywhere near in realtime though. Requires a lot of precise movement, enemy and RNG manipulation (the enemies only freeze semi-randomly).
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

From Super Metroid, the ending of Saturn's RBO Draygon fight and the WS attic from the current 100% run. Together with the frozen Mocktroid bridge posted by Kriole they are probably my 3 favorite moments in Super Metroid. And I really like the Ridley fight and the Rio bridge from the low% Zero Mission run, though both of those are rather long. EDIT: Dragonfangs ninjaposted the Rio-bridge.

YouTube video, because I can re-encode (the 240p). If I hunt for the high quality ones then transmitting that to you is wrong.

Luck Manipulation will be harder to show. I think any clip we do choose will rely on some knowledge of the game being played. I suggest Aria of Sorrow all souls for something, though. Here's a few sections. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfkJpzBoJ-M&t=6m53s The room with the kicker skeleton and the room after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfkJpzBoJ-M&t=11m14s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfkJpzBoJ-M&t=15m30s Up until the Red Minotaur soul. I like this because he also manipulates a lot of souls he doesn't need (and doesn't bother to collect) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfkJpzBoJ-M&t=17m15s Through the room with the mirrors.

I have thought about making one of these myself to the tune of Weird Al's "Everything you know is wrong". Though I don't know how YouTube would take the copyright. The tagline would have been "We don't break the rules... we just find the loopholes." Also, shameless self-plug: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHlp143FCDk&feature=player_detailpage#t=68 This would make for a good 5-second WTF moment.

Here's a weird idea for a montage. Eat At Joes. An old running gag which has kind of disappeared recently http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hETRzNzpFAI&t=4m37s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpvAmMdFpsA&t=27m18s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChjUyzAHms&t=34m There's quite a few more examples. These are just the ones that have stuck with me the most. Speaking of Gunstar Heroes, since other people are doing shameless plugs, I think I'll do some myself. First, playing around with the flame chaser (these are other examples of spelling or drawing): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChjUyzAHms&t=2m47s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChjUyzAHms&t=4m8s The section after the Pong might be good for two player mayhem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChjUyzAHms&t=22m52s That's actually a working shield. Blocks projectiles and everything. Some other moments that could be used? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChjUyzAHms&t=10m37s One of my favorite sections in this run, the fight on the top of the ship. Lots of stuff here that takes a lof more precision than may be possible with a human player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChjUyzAHms&t=18m30s Those walkers usually take a bit of damage. And while I'm doing shameless plugs; here's a good example of death being used as a positive thing, and from what I can tell, probably the most blatant example on the entire site. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s8_688CU64&t=10m18s I can not find a single video where Batman is visible during his beginning stage flicker.

Thank you so much Dragonfangs, this is exactly the type of annotation I need for the clips. Someone pointed out a large part of the clips is old material (as in was used in the old videos), but although it's always the better the more imagination is involved in clip suggestions, there will be a list of all the clips used in this video that can be used for selecting new ones for the next one (from the ones left over perhaps) and this video furthermore will serve a slightly different purpose from the old ones in that it will actually take a closer look at some of them and explain tasing in general. It would be too early to make a new video if it weren't for this difference.

You won't need knowledge of a specific game if, say, you can see all the PC's attacks are criticals and enemies keep missing... But anyway that's why I personally like the idea of having the narrative/commentary going. Makes you able to relay to people things that would be difficult to otherwise.

That's kinda funny I'll admit :) One of those is definitely making it into the "entertainment" part or "creative". Thanks for all the suggestions, didn't have much for "creative" yet. ----- Just to remind everyone: 1) TAS-only tricks only out of principle. 2) Preferably tricks that don't require a ton of explaining. 3) If possible, obsoleted runs are ideal. -remember to annotate your suggestions a little (gives them a higher chance of being used [correctly]). See what Drangonfangs did with his three suggestions for a particularly good example. -ESPECIALLY TELL ME WHAT PART OF THE GAME IT IS: things like what dungeon, what level, what act, what etc... essentially give me a unique title for the trick/passage that separates it from other clips from the same game for my big Excel file. YOU CAN STILL EDIT ANY OF THIS INTO YOUR SUGGESTIONS NOW! Thank you for everything so far! Looking better with every suggestion!

Warepire provided us with a brilliant template for making suggestions. How come I didn't think of that? Consider using this: -the first line doesn't have to be linked, it's fine if it's just the name of the game and the youtube link ----- [2427] DS Super Scribblenauts (USA) in 1:01:41.86 by Chef Stef & Kiwisauce http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=vrTvCqPtxao#t=964 Clip: Start at 16:04, end at 16:35 in the encode. Perhaps slow down the word entering a little in the resulting video so everyone has time to read. Level: 3-9 (full level) Why: A fairly unusual way of solving an archeology puzzle. To come up with many of the solutions in this TAS the authors had to disassemble parts of the game to find out what kind of things they could summon, when, and in which situations they would work. ----- At the same time though, this is a clip that's going to score low on the "clarity" aspect because it requires you pretty much to have played the game to fully recognize what's happening. I am currently using three metrics to help the process of selecting suitable clips: "clarity", "popularity" and "visual impact" each of which can compensate for each other. Even if a clip scores a 1 (out of 5) on one of them, it may still end up getting used with some extra annotations or somesuch. I've been neglecting to mention that there's also the question of brevity - It's easier to fit in short clips than long ones, so that if the trick requires half a minute to show completely, it has to make up for that in other ways to justify focusing on it for that long.

Actually, I like this one because it's clearly not a glitch or unintended, and it's not inconceivable that someone could get it in realtime with enough tries. It's also clearly very difficult to pull off. So it pretty much typifies what TASing is about.
