Well that's a nice little improvement. Too bad it's so far back; hopefully the rng/luck-based stuff isn't screwed up. I'm really excited to see this game TASed (especially from an expert TASer such as yourself) so I hope you have the stamina/patience to finish it. Good luck!

I hardly made progress the one time I picked this game up again, and then this improvement 100,000 frames ago came up, putting me right before the autoscroller game. I honestly don't know if I can finish this TAS at any point in the near future. Not to mention I graduated and need to see what to make of the future, so I might get my hands busy with other things. At least I can say right now this is not going to be finished before 2013.

It turns out the mini Mario glitch can somehow be used to glitch out the brothers' icons (which gives them abilities they shouldn't have). This includes giving Mario High Jump and getting him to turn into a 2nd Luigi. Or giving Mario a speech bubble icon which does nothing. It might be that I already found everything about this new stuff now, but I keep on searching and hopefully I come up with more. These glitched icons last through Game Overs and screen transitions.

In this post I will briefly note what you can do: - You can make Mario turn into Luigi. You can do the "money making jump" as the Luigi doppelganger (but actual Luigi's HP is drained, not Mario's) - You can bake a barrel out of nowhere and Luigi will be in it - WALL CLIPPING MIGHT WORK. I've seen Luigi behave strange and clip into walls. - Luigi can walk on air. Both brothers can do stuff while in midair. If wall clipping can be used for what I want it, you can save many minutes in the TAS. I'm testing this with a complete savegame. This glitch may be useful if you can get Hand Powers early (if only to get into GLITCH STATE which lets you wallclip reliably). No, you can't use Mario's Hand on Luigi to wallclip because Luigi only gets angry at Mario instead of firedashing. EDIT: I found out why this glitch happens in the first place. If Mario is behind Luigi, give Mario "Hand" , then do the minimario glitch. The glitch happens because the game tries to assign "Hand" to Mario at a time when he has a limited set of abilities, therefore you reach out-of-bounds abilities. Looks like you can't wallclip early in the game, then (which is bad because no super glitchy run. which is good because no rerouting/replanning). --- EDIT: A variant of this glitch can happen if Luigi is barreled and in front, turns back to normal and you do something with the icons at the correct frames. --- EDIT: I found another glitch. In university, at the game where blocks fly at each brother, have Mario stand below the block that activates the game and select "Hammer". Have Luigi become the controlled character and then press B which makes Mario jump and start the game. But when playing the game, Mario still has "Hammer" and can't change back to normal which pretty much renders the minigame impossible to beat. --- If there is a barrel, then Luigi (in front) can use his Hand. This is because of the variant described above. Sometimes, after barreled Luigi in front breaks out, Mario can - on a certain frame- hop on the broken out Luigi as if he was still barreled, which glitches out the icons and this can make Luigi get Hand when he's in front.

As shown in this video, Luigi can get temporary Hand Power when there's a barrel. - This means that you can go to the Air port early, but when Mario ingests water, you lose the temporary Hand Power so you cannot complete the Air port at all. - You can go get Super Hammers early which means you can go to Teehee Valley early, but the Peach guiding doesn't trigger unless you have done the Air Port part. - You cannot get the Hand Powers in any other way than after the University, because the way is blocked by a door (and I believe the ocean part also is blocked in many ways). - The University is blocked by an invisible wall. --> Woods, University, Oasis, Air Port, Teehee Valley, 4 Pieces, Joke's End is still intact and you cannot do stuff out of order. EDIT: It is confirmed for the English version RTA that you can skip half of Bowser's castle. It requires you to never save inside the Castle, ever. And it requires you to beat 4 of the 7 Koopalings so you can use a tunnel. It is very complicated and hard to do. EDIT: Another idea to improve the TAS route is to use this glitch (with Hand Power) to skip some of the starbean stuff. You can clip into a wall when Luigi gets barreled (by Mario jumping on him). But, I wasn't able to clip past the door or past the guard at where those snails people are. So that part will probably remain unchanged (still paying 500 coins).

It has been suggested in one of my videos and I now took a closer look at it. And it looks like you can clip on top of the ledge with the fire switch with both brothers in Oho ocean. Which means you can pretty much go from Oho Oasis directly to Hermie 3's place and learn Fire dashing which may be useful in some of the parts that we couldn't use fire dashing before. And this also means that the whole skeleton ship thing is skipped now, along with the barrel minigame. And this means that the TAS will need some significant rerouting, and it may possibly have to be redone from a much earlier point (maybe, because of mushroom collecting and money-related reasons etc.) Video about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3Xm7Gmilgw

Looks very likely that I'm gonna need to start at square one with the TAS. Teehee Valley and Fungitown look skippable, which means I never get mushbadges so there is no point in collecting mushrooms, and the earliest point I collect a mushroom is at frame 21100.

New stuff.. If you can find a way to clip through here, you can skip the entire game (after learning firedashing) (this is confirmed). You can firedash glitch through the first obstacle, but you cannot normally pass the second one.. I need to look into a way to keep glitched selected icons AFTER firedash glitching. If you can keep them and make Mario jump on Luigi which gives him a barrel, then you can clip into a wall. Unfortunately, you can only clip left or right, not upwards. The idea though is, if you clip out of bounds as if you're stuck, you're actually not stuck. You can keep zipping and you will wrap around the room eventually. It should be possible to end up on the other side of the room somehow, I think.. EDIT: You can clip through the first obstacle and have the "jump on barrel" icon. But I'm having a hard time passing the second obstacle now. I'm thrilled and I hope this really does work. Because the alternative - I have done testing on this - still requires you to go to the Airport and escort Peach to Fungitown. The game only wants the 4 starbean pieces when it asks for them. EDIT: Bad news, the wrap-around the room does work but the game uses dword position addresses. It would take 1,280,000 frames to wrap around which is obviously slower. I tried clipping in from the left side of the wall, but the wall is 2 units thick (if it were 1 I could pass through). Clipping on the rocks and then using a firedash glitch on top of them would work, but the game somehow can't handle Mario being clipped while using Hand, so it softlocks. ; ; EDIT: If it were possible to make the brothers switch places at the end of this vbm http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1977924886/mlss.vbm You could wallclip.

Simply posting to give my encouragement; I really hope you're able to pass it. That'd be one insane break to this game. I'm heavily enjoying each new discovery you make with this glitch, nonetheless. :) (Especially that double Luigi one. Wow...)

Well I can't pass it, I tried a ton of things now, and I know I will still keep trying for many days. It would save over 1 hour... I really don't feel like working on the TAS when I know a 1 hour improvement could be around the corner. I wish someone besides me would take a look, I always feel like I may miss something. I'm probably going to make a video about this almost-sequence break.

I finally did it. As said, this will save 1 hour in the TAS. I will make a video soon. The only problem with this is the Bowser's castle skip only works under certain circumstances that I don't understand yet. Hopefully it is not the barrel minigame (the timer that it uses) or something out of reach like that, or I would have to do Bowser's castle the normal way, which would probably mean beating like at the very least the first 4 Koopalings (i.e. battles will take long). I don't know if to glitch past Trunkle to go to Fungitown (if that's even possible) to get mushbadges, even so, I would have collected only few mushrooms. Well, first things first, I will make a video about it. Then I will do a testrun going through the route to see that it reaches the staff credits. And as I do so, I will investigate what makes Bowser's Castle skip work. EDIT: The video for this is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrxf73wyjlc And the VBM http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1266932372/mario%20luigi%20halfgame%20skip%20-%20Kopie.vbm (It will desync at the Popple & Birdo battle)

is it possible to get into little fungitown through the yellow pipe and leave through the green pipe? if a detour there were fast enough and you had enough mushrooms/coins, it might be worth it. ah wait, the yellow pipe is the one luigi takes, isn't it? i guess that's out of the question.

A detour to Little Fungitown may be possible, but it takes kind of long... At best, I only have to face Popple&Birdo*, Bowletta, Cackletta**. At worst I have to face 4 Koopalings, maybe even Fawful, then Bowletta and Cackletta. When I do a test TAS I want to see how much longer the battles take and if I can get the Bowser's castle skip working. _______________ * Birdo hides Popple in one out of four eggs after 2 or 3 turns which wastes time. ** Cackletta hides her exposed heart after 1 or 2 (can't remember) turns as opposed to the English version's 2 or 3. Because it may be that we never have to use firedash glitch, maybe I switch back to the English version for the TAS. However, English version's Cackletta is 400 HP stronger I think.

Looks like even Chucklehuck Woods and Woohoo Hooniversity can be skipped now. Because the 'selected icon' glitch can give you barreled Luigi even without having Hand Powers yet so you can clip through walls and reach Oho Oasis earlier. Not sure if it all works out yet, probably it does. EDIT2: This is confirmed to work out. I never saved and reloaded my game and went through the route with all the skips (used memory writes instead of the glitches though) and the escape way in Bowser's castle is usable. Bosses that I fight now, in theory: Tolstar Dragohoho Queen Bean Popple & Rookie Popple & Birdo Bowletta Cackletta I will end up super weak for Popple & Birdo, Bowletta and Cackletta but probably it won't slow down the battle much more than it already would have been. Just spam Chopper Bros and deal minimum 30 (or 60? Idk) damage per attack, repeat for 10~20 turns and done. EDIT1: Video here. EDIT3: Things to do: - Testrun? - Hammer upgrade skip testing - Test if you can skip Luigi's Hand Power - Think of a proper route and test boss strats (at the moment, it's only chopper bros spam. Need to see how long it takes, if it takes a ton of time, maybe I do buy mush badges after all (which means my WIP is not quite dead, but it skips some mushrooms. I could really need every mushroom I can get, if it comes to this))

Stuff (this is just for me to remember what's going on): - Needs to be tested if a detour to Little fungitown to get a mushbadge is worth it or not. I don't think you can go there just with "hop on barrel" icon but maybe I can fix that from the huge skip movie and use huge skip-style skip past Trunkle. ALSO it needs to be tested if you could just go to Gwahar Ruins to get to Fungitown faster? - I test each battle on JAPANESE with different stats and badges. Having invested in PeaBadges means you can sell them later, but not having invested in them means you have more money. After Popple&Rookie, it may be worthwhile to upgrade HIGE instead of POW (could be done at Queen Bean already <-- needs testing, but I think level-up bonuses hardly matter. First I test only upgrading POW and then see how much POW upgrade I can take away for HIGE to get maybe 1 more mushroom) The following scenarios need testing. ***Popple&Rookie M:PeaBadge L:PeaBadge sell M:PeaBadge for Mushbadge, how much money? how many mushrooms can be afforded? ***Popple&Rookie M:PeaBadge L:None,orBeanBadge? sell M:PeaBadge for Mushbadge, (...) OR give PeaBadge to Luigi? (probably not, in dire need of mushrooms) ***Popple&Rookie M:BeanBadge L:None sell, (...) -If you need to set the glitch again before you can clip into Fungitown, then it may not be worth the detour ..... On another note, English version mushbadge gives 0.199 for mush, super; 0.25 for ultra 0.299 for max JAPANESE version only gives 0.078 for mush; 0.098 for super 0.117 for ultra 0.199 for max Because I never firedash glitch anymore (I believe?), I should do mushbadge-testing on English version. However, I don't have a route for the intro stuff for English version , so I'd have to come up with a route for Stardust Field, Mountain, etc. Important to note: Splash Bros uses used before they are taught to you already count (the tutorial one also counts). On Japanese version you have to pass the tutorial first (tutorial one is not counted) before Splash bros uses get counted. -I need to see if the bargaining ability is different between Fungitown and Castle town. -English Cackletta has 1200 HP, Japanese has 800 HP. Japanese hides 1 or 2 turns sooner than English. This makes it hard to plan ahead. In short, test mushbadge stuff on English. Come up with new route on English. Test non-mushbadge stuff on Japanese. Route notes: -With all skips involved, Castle green pipe is inaccessible. Huge skip Glitch has to be set up in Forest instead. Route idea: Before forest activate green pipe near Airport, after Forest, walk as in video5. Only learn Mario's Hand? green pipe at beach to Forest. Set up the glitch and Airport pipe to beach pipe, 1. surf back and go in cave D near Teehee Valley, mini mario glitch and barrel clip out. 2. OR set up the glitch and Oho Jee deathwarp, barrel clip through and go to Teehee Valley. Teehee valley huge skip. 1. beach pipe -> castle, clip through (cutscene of town being attacked still plays if you go to shop) 2. walk back directly, clip through Firedash glitch in bowser 2. + 1. are planned

- If Luigi has 2 less POW, he does only jump 9 damage (inconvenient). - Bowletta's attacks can vary, so she can heal or shoot stars (throwing off the plan). - Test cackletta -> NEED SYRUPS (how many ?) - On J, when cackletta has less than 400 HP, her arm swing is undodgeable (probably by delevoper's oversight). Using Chopper Bros adv means not needing 6 syrups. Collect only 3 or 4 ? EDIT: Chopper bros adv saves a bit of time at Cackletta, but spending time learning it wastes that time (margin is 2800~3500 frames) FINAL STUFF: 1 syrup gotten in forest (1 total, get 2 beforehand = 3) (get 11 mushrooms beforehand) 1 syrup used in BIRDO (2) 9 chopperbros uses in BIRDO + 2 (eggs) 7 uses in BOWLETTA 1 syrup in BOWLETTA (1) 5 uses in CACKLETTA + 6 1 syrup used if Luigi needs it, just to be safe

Rough notes for console runners. This is when you enter Teehee Valley as in this video. I can't and don't want to explain EVERYTHING you have to look out for (for example, how to barrel clip, or how to teleport through the wall. It's hard and not very explored but maybe I will put more notes at a later time. You can still always feel free to ask. I want to try a glitched testrun on console later today.
***HOW TO HUGE SKIP on console***

Mario highjump, L x18, cancel highjump
hop on barrel INTERRUPTED by wall, clip

Mario behind Luigi, L x154
Luigi breaks out
Mario highjump, L x35, cancel highjump
Mario selects Hammer and pounds Luigi
L x104

Next room, face left, Mario highjump (facing up crashes the game)
Either jump conveniently and clip by walk upward.
Or repeatedly walk up and slightly left, highjump+cancel, repeat

Select Mario's highjump, in highjump L x61 or x62
hop on barrel INTERRUPTED by wall, break out proceed
Important note: Barrel clipping does not work on the English version. Therefore, all the new sequence breaks only work on the Japanese version. If console runners want to do a glitched run, they have to get the Japanese cartridge. This is because the wall physics are more robust on the English version.
