Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is my first submission to TASVideos.org and I decided to make Crash Bandicoot 100% TAS. I collected all 26 gems, 2 keys and got the secret ending. This is 1 minute and 34 seconds faster than turbofa's rejected speedrun and I hope this is good enough for publication.
-Emulator used: PSXjin v2.0.2 svn0
-BIOS: scph1001
-100% completion
-Takes damage to save time
-Uses death to save time
-Glitch abuse
Glitches I used:
-Blow up a TNT crate without taking damage
-Avoid damage by spinning
-Wall jumping (in The Lost City and in Sunset Vista)
-Going to the Yellow Gem special area in The Great Gate without the Yellow Gem
In levels, where I couldn't get a gem immediately, I skipped the missed boxes screen by dying near a checkpoint.
About the game:
Crash Bandicoot is a platform video game published by Sony Computer Entertainment, produced by Universal Interactive Studios (now the defunct Vivendi Games) and developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation. It was released in North America on August 31, 1996 and in Europe on November 1996. It was re-released for the Sony Greatest Hits line-up on September 15, 1997 and for the Platinum Range on March 1998. It has since been re-released as a downloadable game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable via PlayStation Network in North America in 2006 and in the PAL regions in 2007. Crash Bandicoot is the first installment in the Crash Bandicoot series, chronicling the creation of the titular character at the hands of the series antagonist Doctor Neo Cortex and his henchman Doctor Nitrus Brio. The game's story follows Crash's effort to stop his creators' plans for world domination, clean up any pollution they have caused, and save his girlfriend Tawna, a female bandicoot also evolved by Doctor Cortex and Nitrus Brio.

Noxxa: Claiming for judgment.
Noxxa: Hello iiro2, and welcome to TASVideos. Unfortunately, it appears that your TAS is improvable in many areas, as shown by other TASers who are more familiar with the workings of the game. Because of this, as well as the fact that viewer response in general is quite poor, I'll have to reject this run.
Better luck next time!

I'm voting Meh. reason you didn't get the gem at Jungle rollers early enough. it's possible to still get it with invisibility I know 'cause I did it a couple of hours ago before this tas went up. (I had one mistake too I forgot to spin early in nsanity beach.) Bracketing about N.Sanity Beach you could have lined up your spin with the crabs to hit certain boxes. Link to video It looks very good but you can go faster with alot more preventing backtracking. Road to nowhere you should have death abused waiting for 11 boxes is longer. iiro I can tell that u never checked the forums of Crash 1 'cause your name doesn't get mentioned and by not getting the 2nd gem early Click Here for Crash 1 forums also mentioning I'll make a temp encode for this run it won't be the official run it's just for the people who have issues or glitches of personal manor

I vote meh as well for I saw a lot of points where you jumped where there was no reason to jump. I saw some places where you let things stop you that shouldn't. Overall it could be better.

It depends on what's happening if there is a slope the preferred option is to spin jump up the slope as spinning on slopes while jumping is faster than walking up slopes.

The true act of wall jumping. what u did is the true act of clipping. On the topic of Lost City and Sunset Vista You jumped pass the pushing objects there but in Lost City you waited WHY?! And please don't type back "'cause I cannot go pass it" cause I know that's a big ton of manure. What I always hated about the first Crash compared to 2 and 3 is that it has the endings in 2 different levels so we don't see the final boss fight :(

Quote from the any% tas by Mukki VERY IMPORTANT!:
Mukki wrote:
Movement: Crash's fastest movement speed is with the third mask (velocity = 12), however due to the death requirements it can harldly be used. The next down is spinning (velocity = 10), rather than walking (velocity = 9). However, when crash stops spinning his velocity drops to 7 for two input frames before returning to 9. This makes spinning ultimately slower. If, however, Crash jumps two frames before his velocity drops to 7 it will go straight to 9 instead. This saves a frame every time it is used.
now by me writing before you didn't have a look at the forums on Crash 1 it's also obvious that you didn't grab the lua file for Crash 1 this is needed very badly it's very important. Also Cooljay this is your answer. Now I got a question that needs an answer probably from an experience. are we allowed for Crash 1 to have 2 endings for 100% the "Burnt Down" (Cortex) ending and "The Good Ending"? (Tawna) Now these 2 videos start from dead frame 1 and going by the amount of rerecords (6614) you used I'm in my 2 thousands right now (2150). No I don't suck at Crash games I like optimizing games to its fastest point. Link to video OK some reason what I use for temp encode (no not Vegas something else) is being buggy atm I'll might have to use something else.

This explained a lot. Thank you. I was always wondering why he is was jumping. Seeing this side by side comparison helps make more sense out of it. Maybe just on it's own it seems random. My vote still stands as meh, as I can see from yours that there is someone with a better run coming on it's way. iiro2 still lets things let him slow him down, but yours there is nothing slowing you down. I still should've done some more research though before voting about checking the Crash Bandicoot 1 threads.

By the way, much of what I learned (and wrote) of this game's movement back then is now moot. Pirohiko discovered that diagonal boosting is applicable and so the difficulty of making a Crash 1 TAS that is even remotely optimal has skyrocketed. See the post here. I haven't watched this TAS yet so I cannot comment on how well this has been incorporated.

Ok I'm writing this on my phone so ill edit this on my pc for something else. LOL we linked the same forum but Pirohiko also mentions about skipping getting the green gem aswell on the second level and to grab the gem, sadly iiro2 didn't do this with invisibility lets hope we see which way people will swing. I'm uploading a tempory encode it might fail on uploading. if it fails I'll swap links Edit: Both failed on uploading to YT :(

Sorry, but I am going to have to give this a huge no. Simply because of some points that are kind of sloppy, and the fact that nobody ever uses the jungle rollers skip to get the box gem. I was really hoping the tas would include this. It saves about 2 minutes, it's a damn shame :c. I would also say no because it seems that not much effort was put into the tas, seeing how there is only 6000 re-records for a 1hour movie.

I should mention my tas is behind iiro with 1 extra gem by 1 second. N.Sanity Beach The use of the waiting trick (only wastes some velocity compared to iiro2 not using much at all) at N. Sanity Beach was to line up perfectly with a crab judging by distance on previous rerecords was never lined up no matter what you tried and not waiting for Aku which actually in comparison with iiro about 1.5seconds. Jungle Rollers Iiro didn't use the green gem skip as mentioned in the Crash 1 forums YOU MUST DO THIS TO SAVE TIME, he bypasses it and left it alone this wastes about 1.5 minutes backtracking in the level. Great Gate always uses your savestates you save tons of time. LITERARY AGAIN I used my savestates and i was so lucky NOT to get the spikes to slow me down compared to what happen to iiro2. after the 2nd plant you got stuck going up and going over behind and foreground so that's twice it happens to you. Boulders Spin! you need more spins plan the spins it's more hectic to have it up your bum side Upstream Death abuse was used in WRONG spot the right spot is in-front of the checkpoint. I found this 1 frame save where you can hit the checkpoint and FALL not drown it literary saves 1 frame when you do it. THE SLOPES SPIN JUMP UP! SAVES TIME! Papu Papu I got bored you didn't do anything much with him compared to me which was fight and actually glitch up by damage abuse HIGHER than usual Rolling Stones Not complaining with the first 2 stones as he amount of times I tried it kept being the same spot. But SPIN! Hog Wild I seriously did this without looking at your tas 'cause I thought you did something else. I used more tricks than you on-top of that. You only jumped up the slope once in that level when jumping up slopes saves a couple of frames. Also deliberately time your jumps late 'cause you need the speed so yes suicide the pig but keep going with an air jump. At the silver ! to add the fear of death every time when I could fit it in when it was used as a faster method compared to making the jump 100%. I should mention too iiro2's frame save for exiting a level after getting PERFECT was SLOW if my tas is done I save about 3 seconds off his run because he forgot to get it as dead frames. Your tas didn't have much entertaining content only like just standing waiting on the prey yes those glitches are cool but you can use a lot more glitches than that I know 'cause I basically play Crash 1 for the glitches rather than anything else. On the topic of this you might have scared the audience with Crash almost dead but recovers last second this to is a time saver by 3 frames yet again with velocity. I still hold my Meh vote (even though I cannot change it). I'll come back with a video of ours compared obviously me being slower by only abit but I will pass in about another 4/5 levels later with the use of perfects and obviously death abuse. Yes I wrote this about 2:30am in the morning but my points are still correct Video? Oh yes that's right FIXED :D Link to video I'm going to bring up a very important point soon once I'm done editing the video 'cause I will also write where iiro is faster 'cause technically he is slower than Turbofa without the use of glitches

Ok now I can talk about the majority of the issues in this TAS. Link to video This video will help prove my statement as it is the same for iiro's tas all the way through. Now besides leaving the Green Gem without getting it early1 Iiro2 doesn't use much velocity in his tas he only uses glitches to save time! Mukki, myself and Turbofa did (the one published, one still in progress but only started and one canceled due to forgetting to get the green gem. I should drop the mentioning of green gem talk now and go on with this run. Now bringing up Mukki's tas from the ground (not grave noone is attempting to beat it yet) speed is very important, I'll get to it in a bit. The only way you are faster than Turbofa is with little glitches and only by 1 min & 34 secs You can go faster than that in all honesty if you didn't screw around at the perfect screen if you didn't waste time walking rather than spinning across the ground when velocity goes down you jump (I need to restart mine on the topic of that part) You could have been faster than Turbofa by a good 3/4 minutes if you didn't do the simple lazy things, and I'm not going to stop on the Lazy Things I just mentioned you also should have clearly used more save states I mean seriously Great Gate if you used saves you could have bypassed waiting for the spikes going back down that seriously slew you down (For Mukki he used some interesting techniques to bypass this in his any% tas well besides death), in Upstream you wasted an extra 30-40 frames trying to kill Crash when all you needed to do was jump from a specific position to the checkpoint spin then fall (glitch)/drown in the level before passing the Checkpoint. I'll come back to this and talk about lua scripts and speed now. You need the lua script as made by Pirohiko which isn't hard to make all you need it Notepad++ and the Lua script created by Pirohiko, when you create the lua script and look at it there is a part where it says Velocity make sure your Velocity is always high and not low numbers.

Absolute lie we need to watch mukki's run again do we? What you did in "Road to Nowhere" Seriously made me upset and a tad angry who knows maybe it's faster killing Crash rather than waiting for 11 boxes to hit your head (even though Mukki does this in his tas he used a large margin of velocity in it but the any% speed runner Samura1man of the any% RTA does do this to save time the method needs to be changed for 100% compared to any%. "Sunset Vista" one of the hardest levels in this game I didn't see anything entertain compared to Mukki and Turbofa. "Heavy Machinery" one of my favorite levels I just waited for more like this interesting glitch which would have made people go what just happen to the game (The glitch is at the 3rd Tawna token you can make an interesting jump down the stairs the camera gets lost!) but then again it might be a hard glitch to tas correctly. "Castle Machinery" THIS IS THE LEVEL YOU STARTED BEATING TURBOFA! I am no joking here Turbofa uses less glitches in this level you're lucky to be able to beat him by such a small amount of time. Before heading to a boss you could have wasted you Aku masks as when you enter a boss fight you get the masks back. In some levels you could have entertained us while waiting like this video I did a while back without any tassing, But the one thing I'll keep coming back to is what you did wrong in "Jungle Rollers" (Don't worry I'm not going to mention the green gem this time). At the very start of this level you didn't grab invisibility correctly there is this part that sticks out on the level (Very start first aku box) that you could have just wedged Crash's body in there. I'm going to prevent commenting about anymore of this run.

Spikestuff, could you send me an input file of your work-in-progress?
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.
