That tool would have to be called an emulator, as otherwise it's impossible to tell the exact places where the inputs would desync. [EDIT] Sigh, beat by Nach.

I support the migration to 1.51. I propose that there be a transition period so that the runs currently being made won't be rejected. We can state that 1.43 is obsolete, but if a run is known to have been started before the cutoff, then it can be allowed.

I support moving to 1.51 (and better technology in general,) but I don't support telling people that they can't use a certain version of an emulator to make their videos. Especially since they can just provide the emulator that they used to create the movie along with the file itself.

The keyword isn't "can't" but "shouldn't".

If someone could write a tool to convert 1.43 movies to play in 1.51, that would probably help the transition, especially for those of us who have runs in progress on 1.43 versions.
It is not possible to "convert" a movie created on one emulator with certain timing to a different emulator with different timing.
I was not aware that there was such a drastic difference between 1.43 and 1.51. There wasn't that much difference from FCEU to FCEUX, was there?

They should sync most of the time if you're using the old PPU in FCEUX settings. Otherwise they won't.

The SNES has 3 main components, the CPU, the Sound processor, and the video processor. The latter 2 were completely rewritten for Snes9x v1.5, they don't share any code at all with v1.4x, or earlier versions.

if it's possible, I need an extension. I am reworking BOF 2 as we speak; after that, I will go back to BOF 1, which was recorded with 1,43 v14(?). unless there is a way to play it with 1,5?

That's fine, don't worry about it.

The movie as you made it so far will most likely desync.

THe Maui Mallard improvement i'm working on might take a bit, due to the fact, that college life sometimes gets in the way. I might her more done over the break. I might need an extension.

I've been wanting to do a TAS of Phantom 2040 for years now, but I have major desync issues with it. They seem to be more severe in 1.51 than in 1.43 so I'm a little hesitant to just switch over completely to the new version.

So, if I wanted to TAS a Super Mario Kart hack, would I use 1.43 or 1.51? Is the lag that much of an issue?

I recommend SNES9x-rr 1.52 rather than SNES9x 1.51. Although it currently has fewer TAS features than 1.43/1.51, it probably has enough functions to make TAS. SNES9x-rr 1.52 will be a good choice especially when you're going to TAS a game that synchronizes timing to APU. P.S: Recently, I'm trying to merge the improvements of snes9x-rr to the official one. https://github.com/snes9xgit/snes9x If you're interested, let's update the snes9xgit code and paste a diff to snes9x forum. http://www.snes9x.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=8

"Ideally, I'd like to be able to have the entire site drop v1.43 by 2010, if at all possible." How's that working out for you? I say use 1.43. 1.43 doesn't emulate lag properly, which is why it is best. I can't stand the layout of 1.51/1.52, so I'm not about to switch. 1.43 has more than enough features to make the perfect TAS.

1.43 has less accurate emulation, therefore it is better? Am I not following something here? Or is it 1.51 that doesn't emulate lag properly?

What's the point of timing runs if due to emulation inacccuracies? Would they probably be unbeatable due to extra lag in the more "accurate" version of the emulator?

Something like that. The whole point, from my perspective as an outsider, of a SuperPlay/TAS, is that "everything that occurs in the movie is technically possible on the physical console--it's just that no ordinary human has the timing/reflexes/foresight to achieve it." If the SuperPlay/TAS suddenly is based off of inaccurately emulated hardware, it dismisses the whole thing--it's no longer technically possible on the physical hardware, because the physical hardware operates under different parameters. It's still interesting to watch, sure, but it lacks a lot of the impact. If there's a more accurate emulator, that more closely models the real-world counterpart of the physical hardware, I'm definitely more interested in seeing TAS/SuperPlay movies created using that, because then I can see the player in those movies overcoming the same limitations I, as a humble player, am stumped by. If I watch the video and claim "Impossible!" and the answer is "Actually, it's entirely possible, because the emulator doesn't model this XYZ chipset accurately, so in the computer version of the game, you can skip level 3 entirely!" I am not awestruck, I am disappointed. :P Think of it this way: If there's a cheat that lets you do something on the PS3 version of the game, and the XBox360 version of the same game doesn't have the cheat, and all you've ever played is the XBox360 version... how impressed are you going to be if you see a fancy stunt pulled in the PS3 version, knowing that it's achieved ONLY through use of a cheat that your version doesn't have?

Here's why I will never use 1.52: There's no Lua scripting support.

The frame-advance is really weird compared to 1.43. I hold it down, and when I press a button, it stops on that frame. It's rather annoying.

So...any progress on banning the use of Snes9x?

Nope. Unfortunately there are still legitimate reason to use each of the snes9x versions (except for 1.51), zsnes, and lsnes. I don't think banning is the correct solution. The correct approach should be to create an irresistible alternative. All new versions have had something to turn off new users, unfortunately.
