Based on a highly reputable source, it appears that the average body temperature of a hedgehog is around 35 °C, whereas that of a human is around 37 °C. Furthermore, the former can decrease when hedgehogs hibernate. Thus, there is no contest about which mascot is cooler. Sonic ftw.

What makes one mascot better than another? Marketability? (Even then, how would this be measured? Number of extraneous items that the character appears on? Pure # of sales for main titles?) Number of games starred in? I really can't think of anything else.
OTOH marketability and logic/sense don't always go hand-in-hand... :P

At first I thought this thread wasn't serious, based on the first few posts, but as I got further in I started to get the sense that the thread actually is serious and that's pretty depressing.

Can't it be both?

Too bad it's too big to be one of your avatars. Also, I think Mario is the cooler title character (he's not an animal), especially because of his design, voice, and jumping ability.

A mascot is usually an animal (sometimes mythological), possibly a more or less anthropomorphic one (like Sonic is). Sometimes it could be a robot. Humans are seldom, if ever, used as mascots, possibly because of the implications. (Mascots, while usually not pets, have a lot in common with them, and human pets would have quite unfortunate implication.
Our school's mascot are the senators. Also, I vote Mario, I don't enjoy Sonic games.
