Super Metroid - Any% "GT Code" TAS in 0:18 by Saturn

Recorded on Snes9x 1.43-improvement12 (but should work fine on future versions of the Snes9x 1.43 series as well)

About the Game

Super Metroid is a classic platformer with many advanced techniques and a very fine, subpixel-based move engine. The story is about a bounty hunter called Samus who has the goal to explore a foreign planet called Zebes to find and destroy Mother Brain, the evil leader of the galaxy who is breeding a mighty species called Metroids to abuse them for her own benefits. During the journey you will find alot of items such as new ammo, energy tanks, special upgrades that speed you up or allow to pass certain areas you would normally not be able to, and making your character strong enough to be ready for the upcoming showdown against Mother Brain.
Despite being over 16 years old by now, it is considered as one of the best games ever made, and is still played by many people on a regular basis. Due to the many different move techniques, a high variety through the new upgrades, and alot of route possibilities, this game is a very common target for many types of speedruns and playthroughs.

Moviemaking & Comments

This is a different kind of any% run for Super Metroid, recorded between December 2, 2010 and February 23, 2011, demonstrating how to considerably shorten the completion time by using the "GT Code", a trick discovered in late 2010 by JAM. It's executed by holding the A, B, X, and Y buttons during a door transition to the Golden Torizo room (regardless from which side), which immediately gives you all items except of Screw Attack, 700 Energy, 300 Reserve Energy, 100 Missiles, 20 Super Missiles, and 20 Power Bombs. This allows to introduce many not in regular runs available speed tricks and rare boss strategies with the help of Plasma/X-Ray combination I specially developed for this run, to pace through the rest of the game very quickly.

Notable features of the run

Improved Maridia Tube Entrance

Already introduced in the PAL Any% run, the new strategy ultimately saves around a second over the commonly used entrance for runs that don't get the Maridia mainstreet Missile.

Reverse Kago Elevator Tech with Screw Attack

Since the Screw Attack cancels the invincibility time after a damage boost immediately, it's impossible to pass the 2nd platform without delay and taking additional 50 HP damage from it. The tech in this run solves the problem by providing a nearly same fast alternative with the help of the early Power Bomb placement / ghost through platforms combo, while also saving 35 HP by taking spike damage instead.

Mother Brain

This was one of the more time-consuming parts of the run, as I focused to show the full potential of the "Stand Up Glitch". Compared to that introduction demo, which more or less set the standard for later TASes so far, the MB battle in this run is more than 6,5 seconds faster.

DarkKobold: Alright, time to judge this.
First off, as a result of this discussion, it is pretty clear that this is an intentional debug code, and not the result of a memory glitch. Thus, it will be judged as such. Nitsuja came up with a good list of games that use passwords/input codes and the reasons why here. Note that, similar to that thread, none of the codes used power-up the character as the sole action. The closest is Biker Mice From Mars. However, it could easily be argued that a full movie of BMFM would not be acceptable, due to the length of time required to reach that power-up, and thus the code was used out of necessity. (Also note that none of those listed are actually in the Concept Demo Section. The concept demo section contains only 3 types of movies - hacked ROMs, movies that start from Savestates, and movies that start from non-blank SRAM.)
Super Metroid, however, is not like the movies listed in Nitsuja's post. In fact, collecting the power-ups is considered an interesting enough goal on its own, that a 100% collection of said power-ups movie is published. Since there is no justifiable reason with which to use this code, it goes against the type of movie we aim for here.
The reason for rules such as "Play at hardest difficulty" and "Don't use cheat codes" is that we want the TASer's character to be at the highest disadvantage, as opposed to an "Arm to the Teeth Code" which essentially removes the "difficulty" in collecting items. Thus, I am rejecting this for using a cheat code.
A final note: The only reason for which many people have given that this be published is that it is entertaining. However, Super Metroid is almost unique in its gameplay, as it is extremely non-linear, to the point that there are nearly infinite variations in the routes available to complete the game. In fact, this is so prevalent, that the SM community has created names for various routes that add challenge. (See RBO, suitless, 14% Ice Beam Route, 14% Speed Booster Route, this "GT code route," and more that I'm sure I'm not even aware of.) My point being, is that a highly optimized version of nearly any route through Super Metroid being called a new 'category' would garner a large amount of people saying "this run is very entertaining." SM makes for entertaining TASes. That much can't be argued. That doesn't mean that every route through the game should be published here.
We have 3 published movies of Super Metroid here, that cover the scope of rational TASes. One TAS breaks the game down, through SRAM corruption. Another TAS finds the fastest route through the game, without fundamentally breaking the game. A final TAS demonstrates the entire game by collecting all items, and defeating all bosses. I think it would take a pretty good reason beyond "it is entertaining" to have a different category published, or else we will be inundated with Super Metroid categories.

So each run should obsolete just the same category of run (100% obsoletes 100%, any% obsoletes any%, low% obsoletes low%...). And there should be as many categories as each game allows. Lots of entertaining movies seem to be lost because of rules.

Voted "Yes" because this movie is awesome. I'm not sure if it should obsolete anything because of the code, though... maybe it could go in demos/hacks?

The main reason why cheat codes (either directly supported by the game itself, or forced onto it by externally tampering with the program code with a cheating device) is that cheat codes are meant to make gameplay easier (if not outright trivial). TASing is not about what it would look like if the gameplay was as easy as possible, but more or less the opposite: What it would look like if the gameplay was as hard as possible and a superhuman was playing the game. This is the reason why the hardest difficulty setting is preferred in games where you have the option, even when the easiest difficulty setting would result in a faster completion time. It's pretty clear that if this debug code was usable from the very start of the game, the run would not be accepted. Does it make any difference that the code becomes usable only mid-way through the run? (Imagine that the code was usable right from the start, but the author delayed using it until later, in the same way as here. The result would be identical to this, but it would most probably be rejected because the usage of the cheat was completely arbitrary. Why would it make a difference when it becomes possible to use the code?)

Well, using the code did make for a reasonably even speedrun flow, largely uninterrupted by item collection and detours, which I assume was the main reason most people above who had enjoyed the run did so (not talking about SM TASers here, since they can also appreciate it for its less obvious merits). In this respect I find this argument to hold some water:

While exceptions have been accepted from since the dawn of time, and from a more or less official point of view exceptions never set precedents, it still worries me the can of worms that accepting more and more "uses debug/cheat codes" runs can open. We are slowly but steadily getting closer and closer to infringing the limits of what TASing was accused of in the first years: "OMG, this is so fake! They hacked the game and edited the video!" (No, I'm not saying that this particular submission should be rejected for the fear of a slippery slope. I'm just thinking out loud. In fact, I have yet not formed an opinion on what to vote on this.)

I definitely vote no on this run. I do not like at all that you could obtain almost all weapons via som obscure button pressing. JXQ prettty much summarized my thoughts:

I'd say there is a difference. In your parenthetical case, I personally would reject the run solely because it is suboptimal. If he's going to use the code, he'd better use it as soon as it saves time to do so. But in this case, it's not available from the start. In fact, it's only available in the Golden Torizo's room, a room which is quite frankly about as far as possible from the start. So we start by seeing an unusual route which aims to reach that room as fast as possible. After that, we get a rather interesting hybrid of the 100% and any% runs, where we get to see all the various speed tricks you can do with the items without constantly stopping for missile expansions. As well as a few you don't see in the 100%, like Plasma+Xray vs Draygon. ...You know, now I'm not entirely convinced I would reject the run if it used the code at the start. It'd be like a New Game+ for Super Metroid, and that might actually be pretty fun to watch.

Okay, having watched this, here's my thoughts. Up to lower Norfair, this basically looks like the RBO run Saturn made earlier, just with a detour to pick up Varia (as opposed to many detours to pick up enough energy tanks and ammo to survive the heated rooms). From the LN entrance to the GT room is new, but that's such a short distance it doesn't really mean much. And from then on, we largely just have standard level navigation with a few minor tweaks to specific rooms (e.g. using grappling beam instead of spacejump / shinespark in the Maridia Mount Doom room) that add up to less than 10 seconds of gains. The boss fights are trivialized even more than usual due to access to the plasma beam + X-ray trick -- while this hasn't been seen before, I felt that it detracted from the entertainment after its first use. Basically, what's new here is a short segment of Lower Norfair, a few scattered navigational improvements (which I must recognize are a notable achievement especially given how well-understood this game is), and the boss fights. I don't find that to differentiate this run enough from the other runs already published. When you add the fact that this run cheats, I can't vote yes.

Yea boring with the X-Ray Scope Glitching, but a fully powered up Non Glitched 100% Run would be very entertaining. Tackling each room Fully Powered up sounds fun. BTW the Metroid Skip that Saturn did. Was it only possible due to the Arm Pumping or is it just timing? I would really like to know if it would be possible on console. Also after watching again is he beaming the Metroid's Hit Box? I definitely don't think this would be possible on console.

I have to admit I did find this entertaining. However, that had to do with the fact that it was a Super Metroid run, and not anything particular about this run itself. As for the debug code... Ugh. :\ I completely disagree with it's use, as it's simply a cheat code. If this ends up getting published then it should definitely be in the Concept Demo section.

It's been a good while, gentlemen. http://tasvideos.org/19M.html Uses the Konami code at the end. Yes, it is an old movie. Yes, it was published for historical reasons [so I think, like Morimoto's SMB3 run]. At the same time, yes, it uses a code. Also, there are other movies on the site that use codes to either start at later levels or skip part of the game. Would love to add my Yes to the mix, but my post count is too low... Saturn, welcome back, good to see your Metroid runs again.

Thanks for a short, fast and entertaining run, Saturn! Though this makes use of a debug code, I don't see a problem with allowing that as a separate category, since the end result was interesting. A few questions: * Was it faster to only use one bomb on the wall in the room to the left of the ship? * Is the plasma + X-ray techinque used here different from the normal version of the glitch, or does it just benefit that much from frame-precise control? * What exactly triggers the stand-up glitch? Normally it doesn't work if you wear varia, right? Or is the mechanism instead that it is triggered if you have >= 100 energy left, but not enough to survive another attack, which is why it is easier to trigger without varia? * Would you please submit your Super Metroid Redesign run, too? I don't understand why people think a game can have too many categories. If you think it will be too confusing with many, just give a few representative ones a star or a moon, so that new visitors easily find them. I don't think the number of existing categories should enter into the equation at all when judging a submission, only quality and novelty, and this run has both.

The step from that to allowing gamegenie cheat codes is disturbingly small. I still endorse splitting the site into two: The purist side with strict "no hacking, no cheating" rules, and the free side with a "do whatever you want as long as it's funny" mentality (iow. a machinima site).

So far, there seems to be an agreement that this run is very well done. If there was already a category for it, it would certainly be published. We also agree that this run doesn't fit into an existing category and would need it's own. So is the "GT Code" category unique and entertaining enough to replace an existing category? I don't think so. Certainly not the any% or 100% runs. I wouldn't have it obsolete the glitched low% run, either - although it has a long xray sequence, it features a pretty ingenious solution that looks a lot better than a cheat code that's easy to confuse with blatant video editing. So should we allow an additional category for Super Metroid? Why, I love Super Metroid, so don't let me stop you. But there's more valid categories not featured here: RBO, unglitched 14% low%, GT Code, maybe GT Code 100% (ugh) .. if given the choice to add only one of these, I'd say RBO. Second choice would be 14% low%. (AFAIR neither of those has a publishable run at this point, but that's a different matter) FWIW, I think this site needs a good RBO and a good SM Redesign run to suitably cover everything SM related. Still hoping Saturn would submit his redesign run instead of countless runs on questionable categories ;)

Honestly if we were to add a new run that had what this run has of interest, I'd rather it be a run that starts from a savefile and uses the reset glitch. Thus the movie would start with a fully powered-up Samus, trigger the glitch, reset the game, and then start again from the beginning, only with every upgrade except for missiles already acquired. That would seem to provide what this run has of interest without the illegitimate feel. TRON: I would say that the Gradius run using a code was an exception, and exceptions here do not set precedent. Your other examples are completely different; even then there was generally a decent-sized debate over whether to accept them because of the code use.

I don't see why you think so. Game Genie codes hack the game with the use of an external device. That is not the case here.

Encodes of this run should have an annotation when Entering the Golden Torizo's room. There will never be a 100% run using the GT code. Starting a game from a completed save using the reset glitch wouldn't be interesting at all, it'd be the same as the last part of a 100% run but without the Mother Brain fight, Samus would just go straight to Tourain and straight back out
