This is an attempt to make a Duck Hunt TAS as entertaining as possible. The goal in this TAS is to play 1 round of each game mode (1 duck, 2 ducks and clay shooting) perfectly, shooting the target as soon as possible. After the first round in the first two game modes, the game is reset and the next game mode is played. Only 1 round in each game mode is played because all other rounds would look almost identical. Also, by playing only 1 round in each game mode, all aspects of the game are shown, and hopefully you won't get bored in the short time span this movie last.
Anyway, perhaps this is a silly game to TAS, but I don't know how to give it a better chance than with these goals. If you have another idea, let me know.
Duck Hunt is a repetitive game, but by keeping the TAS short and as varying as possible, and considering it's a popular game, it might have a shot at publication. Either way, no one has submitted a serious attempt at this game, so I'll give it a try.
Randil: Cancelling this, it probably wasn't a good idea to submit, so sorry about that. Still, I had some fun making it. I'll do a more serious TAS next. Randil: Uncancelling and leaving it to its fate. May you fare well, brave submission.

Nach: Response for this wasn't so great, rejecting.

Nach: Since covering all worthwhile content in a game is now vaultable, accepting.

Even though I slightly enjoyed the first seconds of this run, I will vote no due to the repeditive game play. Sorry, but I don't think this game will be fun enough though the entire TAS.

Future tense? You didn't actually watch the whole thing?

This would have, indeed, made a perfect April Fools Day submission. Pity that Randil "wasted" it by submitting it now... :) (A submission worthy of April Fools Day by no means implies that it's not worthy of publication. There have been at least one past example where such a "joke" submission was actually such a good idea that it was published and has been regularly obsoleted ever since.) As for whether this run can be considered entertaining or not, let's not forget that Duck Hunt was one of the most widely spread games of the NES because it came bundled with tons of them. Hence a significant percentage of the target audience of this website has at one point in their life played this game, which might raise interest in seeing it beaten perfectly.

IMO, this is in the same vein as the Phantasy Star II run Zareon did some years ago but never submitted; very good technically, but not entertaining at all. No vote.

<adelikat> doubly disappointing on the duck hunt submission <adelikat> I assumed it was a start from savestate that showed the kill screen <adelikat> that at least might have been a tad interesting <adelikat> this is just a "hey I can click my mouse on the first frame possible" TAS <adelikat> that's no more impressive than title screen optimization <adelikat> a whole TAS of title screens That's pretty much my opinion. I voted no.

I chuckled at the first shot, and at least it wasn't really long. It's more of a demonstration, though.
Working on a mod of an old favorite in my spare time. PM for updates!

Hmm, I'm somewhat amused. The clay pigeons were funniest to me, because I could pretend that a bunch of explosives were being set off in the town near the mountains. Also, I was surprised to see that some of the mini-rounds in Game B were faster than others: why is it sometimes possible to kill the two birds faster? At this point, I think the only main reason to publish this would be as a demonstration of a technically flawless run (at least we're pretty convinced of that...), especially to people unfamiliar with TASes. However, if I saw this as my first TAS, I'm not sure I would find it impressive. Instead, I'd feel like the TASer cheated, and I wouldn't see any skill in it. On the other hand, to pick another "bad" game choice, I can watch the Monopoly run and ask myself, "How in the flying lightbulb did that happen?! Wow!" Because of that, I don't think it's worth publishing this run. No vote, although I salute you Randil for the attempt.

Are you talking about this, perhaps?
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. It seemed like the ducks and clay pigeons had variable delay times before they appeared. Is this the case, or are the times fixed? If they're variable, were they optimized for this TAS?

Mr. Kelly R. Flewin had this idea: How about a run that starts from a savestate on 1 duck mode round 99, beats this round, shows off round 0, the kill screen (i.e. not kill the birds as fast as possible but rather as late as possible, to show how fast the birds fly), then resets the game, and plays 1 round each of 2 ducks and clay shooting? The delay times between birds and clay pigeons are variable, but they don't seem to be manipulatable.

It isn't even really a normal TAS if you start from a savestate at the end of the game, and would probably just provide confusion because the circumstances were forced by a savestate. It seems to me that this is creating somewhat arbitrary guidelines in order to make the game publishable. It would essentially be a quick, novel demonstration that may be better suited for a youtube video. Props for the demo, but I don't think this game is good for publishing under conditions of the potential based on current knowledge.

I actually enjoyed this movie, as well as the one previously submitted to youtube, laughing at both. Even I know, intellectually, that this game must be relatively easy to TAS but unlike most games here - which at least show the avatar, even if they're glitching through walls, firing at inhuman rates or whatever - this makes absolutely no sense unless you're familiar with the game - targets in the A/B modes rarely even appearing - and there's something charming and hilarious about that, I think. If a sort of guide were made explaining how to make this - as suggested in the NES forum - then I (as a nonTASer) would definitely follow such a guide, hoping to go on to TAS som Snes puzzle games. Maybe that's the optimal place for this run - linked to on the front page in a 'learn how to TAS' guide. Not that such a thing should necessarily exclude the game being published 'normally'. I still don't understand - and you still haven't addressed - why the score for each duck is variable. It seems to me that if you could get a higher score in any of those 3 stages, that would be a technically superious run. So, though I'm no expert, I'm not convinced that this run is perfect. I did enjoy the previous, longer, video but I don't think that playing to level 0 would be particularly entertaining. The 'humour' would have long diminished by then and the kill screen - for those interested - can be viewed via the human playthrough anyway.
I'm just some random guy. Don't let my words get you riled - I have my opinions but they're only mine.

Sorry but it's very boring and repetitive for me, bad game choice really. I don't think this deserves to be published. It's just: Shot the ducks in the first frame possible, nothing more. No Surprising moments, just the obvious. Voted No.

Hey look up some posts. I had that idea too! :< I assumed that is what you were submitting in the first place given the forum thread discussion prior to this submission. I think that has more of a viable chance for publication (as a cocnept demo I guess). Though in the end, it is still just someone pointing and clicking a mouse on the first frame they can kill something. It is trivial TASing either way.

While I don't think it should be published, I must admit that it's primarily because it was a movie I was interested in seeing, but couldn't see anything interesting done with the game despite it being everything a TAS should be. To be honest I'd call the TAS a success, even though it shouldn't be published on the main site. Anyone who uses the search bar to find this TAS of Duck Hunt from now on should be able to experience the best that can be offered by a TAS of it. If nothing else, someone who wondered what the best possible effort could be will be rewarded with a viewing of just that.

I'm seeing that the response to this video is split pretty much down the middle. How would you guys feel about it being a concept demo?

Voting no, this is not very fun, hmmm, how is it superplay ? you can shoot instantly anywhere Im pretty sure not to deceive Randil since apparently he didnt excepted this to be published, so no regrets ! :D (Now that thing with the robot using the gun to shoot at the screen sounded interresting, but this is not directly related to tasing tought)

No. If your intent is to use it as an instructional video for new TASers, a link to the submission would suffice. But publishing it is not the right thing to do.

I don't know why, but I've always hated ducks. Especially when they go *Quack* *Quack*. So it's always been my dream to shoot one of them right in the face, and this game provides the perfect antidote to it it. Yes vote. /sarcasm
